Chapter 1 Introduction This chapter gives an overview of the features of the Cyclade s AlterPath KVM/net. This chapter describes how ad ministrators and operators can us e the KVM/net features to securely mana ge connected computer systems and a lar ge variety of devices from anywhere on the local area network or on the Internet.
Description 2 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide Description The KVM/net is a 1U rack-mountble de vice that serves as a single access point for administering and using servers and other devices through inban d and out-of-band access methods.
Introduc tion 3 Description Note: The 500-foot limit includes the distance of the Us er 2 from the KVM/n et and the distan ce of the mos t remote system connected to a KVM port. Secondary KVM units such as the Cycl ades AlterPath KVM Expander or an AlterPath KVM can be cascaded for extended KVM se rve r connections.
Guidelines for Using the KVM/net 4 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide Guidelines for Using the KVM/net Configuration of user accounts and access to the ports and all other manageme nt of th e connected device s is done through the W eb Manag er .

Introduc tion 21 Cascaded Devices Cascaded Devices The KVM/net supports cascading, which allows administra tors to connect secondary KVM units to a primar y KVM/net. Cascading allows administrators to increase the number of managed devices to up to 1024 servers with a centraliz ed c onfiguration and access interface .
Cascaded Devices 22 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide Figure 1-9: Cascaded KVM Devices from a KVM/net As depicted in the previous figure , the KVM/net supports one level of cascading: The prima ry KVM/net controls the secondary level of KVM units connected to it .
Introduc tion 23 Cascaded Devices Administrators can co nnect up to 32 KVM units to the master KVM/net. Each cascaded KVM device has two management ports that can be connected to the primary KVM/net. Note: Y ou must connect the master KVM/net’ KVM port to User 2 on the slave.
Cascaded Devices 24 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide Note: In addition to a CA T5 cabl e, you need a KVM T ermin ator to connect to the User 1 port of a cascade d KVM, KVM/ne t, or KVM/netPlus.
Introduc tion 25 Cascaded Devices The KVM administrator must take th e actions described under “Where Documented” to allow any ot her type s of access than the defaults defined in the previous table. See “Authentication” on page 45 for the tasks related to setting up authentication.
Cascaded Devices 26 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide needs to understand in order to perform advanced configurati on of KVM permissions. The following table shows the tools that the KVM/net administrator can use to set KVM port permissions an d where in this manual to go for further details.
Introduc tion 27 Cascaded Devices Decision 2: Check Group’ s KVM Port Permissions 2. Is the user included in a group with KVM port permissions that allow or deny access to the port? • If yes, access is allowed or denied. • If no, skip to Decision 3.
Cascaded Devices 28 AlterPath KVM/net Inst allation, Administration , and User ’s Guide • If user jill is trying to access port 4 and the Generic User has port 4 in a list of ports with no access permissions, then jill is denied access .
Introduc tion 29 Server Access: Inband and Out of Band • If user jennifer is not a member of any group with a Default Permission specified, then her access request is pas sed to decision 6.
