9 SECTION 3: TRACTOR PREPARATION Connect the Battery Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain lead and lead compou nds. Wash hands after hand ling . The tractor is shipped with a sealed battery, with the positive battery cable factory connected.

11 NOTE: References to L EFT and RIGHT indicate that side of th e tractor when facing forward while seated in the drivers seat. Reference to FRONT indicates the grille end of the tractor; to REAR, the drawbar end. Steering Wheel The steering wheel, centered on the dash panel, is used to turn the tractor left or right while drivin g.
12 NOTE: A record of the actual hours of operation should be kept to as sure maintenance procedures are com- pleted according to the schedule in this manual. The Indicator Monitor will also remind the operator of maintenance interva ls for changing the engine oil.
13 D. P arking Brake Lever Figure 4 The parking brake lever is loca ted to the right of the steering whee l in the dash panel. With the brake peda l depressed fully, push the parking brake lever downward and release th e brake pedal to lock the parking brake.
14 M. Fuel Fill Cap The fuel fill cap is located on the fender to the left of the seat. N. Cup Holder The cup holder is located on the fender to the left of the seat. O . Hydrauli c Lift Lever The hydraulic lift lever is located on the fender to the le ft of the seat.
15 IMPORTANT: When u sing power take-off operated equipment, best performance is achieved with the throttle lever in the “FAST” position. V . Choke Lever The choke lever is locate d to the left of the steering wheel in the throttle/choke lever pod.
16 continuou sly for more th an 10 seconds at a time. If the e ngine does not start wi thin this time, turn the key to “STOP” and wait a minute to allow the engine’s starter motor to cool. Try again after waiting. • After the engine starts, slo wly release the brake pedal.
17 Driving On Slopes Refer to the SLOPE GAUGE on page 8 to help determine sl opes where you may not operate safely. WARNING: Do not mow on inclin es with a slope in excess of 15 degrees (a r ise of approximately 2-1/2 feet every 10 feet). The tractor could overturn and cause serious injury.
18 Using the REVERSE CA UTION MODE ke y position The REVERSE CAUTION MODE position of the key switch module allows the machine to be operated in reverse with the blades (PTO) engaged. IMPORTANT: Mowing in reverse is not recommended . Use extreme caution while operating the tractor in the “Reverse Caution Mode”.
19 Engagin g Differential Lock Fully depress the diff. lock pedal to lock the transmission differential and provide constant power to both rear wheels when increased traction is needed. Release the diff. lock pedal when extra traction is not needed. Depressing the brake pedal also actuates the diff.
20 SECTION 6: ADJUSTMENTS and MAINTENANCE Seat Adjustment WARNING: Do not adjust the seat when the tractor is moving, as th is could cause the opera tor to lose contro l of the tractor. For the comfort of the operator, the tractor is equipped with an easy to operate adjustable seat.
21 If greater access is requi red, the tractor is equipped with quick release side panels. Remove the quick release side panels as follows (Se e Figure 16): • Open the hood b y lifting upward at the side panel notches on e ach side of the tractor.
22 Tire Inflation Keep the tires inflated to th e recommended pressure. Improper inflation will affect tire life and operator comfort, and also could affect the level of the mower de ck and quality of cut. See the tire side wall for proper inflation range.

25 SECTION 7: SERVICE General Battery Information WARNING • Battery posts, terminals and related accessories contain l ead and lead compounds. Wash hands after handling. • Should batter y acid acciden tally splatter int o the eyes or onto the skin, rinse the affected area immediately with clean cold water.
26 Headlight Bulb Replacement Replace headlight bulbs as follows: (See Figure 17) 1. After noting which wire connects to each terminal, unplug the wi re harness leads from the headlight socket terminals.
27 Changing T ransmissio n Oil WARNING: The fluid for your transmission has been spe- cially formulated to ensure the safe and proper opera- tion of your tractor. When changing the transmission fluid replace it with Cub Cadet Drive System Fluid Plus ONLY.
28 Electrical Box The electrical box contains the relay and fuses. Refer to Figure 19 for the electrical box layout. The ele ctrical box is located under the up per air baffle in front of the dash panel.
29 From just above the right axle carrier, inside the right frame rail, slowly turn the hex nylon lock nut at the end of the brake rod as foll ows to adjust th e brake (R efer to Figure 23 ): • Turn the nylon lock nut clockwise to increase the braking force.
30 • Pinch in the lock tabs on the oil drain valve, then pu ll the drain port outward to begin drainin g oil. Refer to Figure 24. • After the oil h as finished draining, push the end of the oil drain val ve back in, until the tabs click into place.

32 LIMIT A TIONS This Emission Control System Warranty shall not cover any of the followin g: (a) repair or replacement required because of mi suse or neglect, improper maintena nce, repairs improperly performed or repla cement not conforming to Kohler Co.
33 Cleaning The Engine This tractor has an air-cooled engine. Air must be able to circulate freely around the engine through the fly- wheel screen, through the coolin g shrouds and over the fins of the cylinder head and cylin der block.
34 Figure 26 Refer to Figure 27 for information regarding the proper typ e of oil to ad d to the crankcase. • Place the tractor on a level surface and engage the parking brake. Sto p the tractor engine and remove the ignition key. • Clean the area around the oil filler cap to prevent debris from entering the crankcase.
35 • Remove the flexible tubing from th e drain valve. Clean the tu bing and store in a safe place for future use. • Clean the drain valve and push the plastic dust cap onto the valve. • Turn the replacement filter open en d up and pour new oil into the filter through the threaded center hole.
36 WARNING: Operating the engine with loose or dam- aged air clean er components will allow unfiltered air in to the carburetor , causing e x- tensive wear and eventual failure of the engine. Servicing The Precleaner Wash and re-oil the foam pre cleaner more often under extreme ly dusty or dirty conditions.
