734 Core l Painter X3 Getting St arted Guide W arp and wef t expressions in Corel P ainter In Corel P ainter, you need to use the w eave pattern expression language to ge nerate a weave. Y ou may find working with the pattern expression language more logical than working with very complex expanded sequenc es.
We a v e s 735 Defining warp and we f t color expressions Y ou can use one co lor for all the warp threads an d another for all the weft threa ds, or you can set up a se quence of colors for ea ch. When defining thread color se quences using the pattern expression la nguage, you must identify the colors alphabetica lly .
736 Corel Painter X3 Gett ing Started G uide Designing the tie-up The purpose of the tie-up is to describe which of the warp rows to use when weaving a given weft thread. It works in conjunctio n with the warp and weft expressions to generate the weave pattern.
We a v e s 737 In this tie-up, alternate black cells that are positioned in the fourth row and column instruct the warp th read (white) to be placed in front of the weft thread (black). Notice that the addition of the bl ack cells in the fourth row and column produces a checkerboard effect.
738 Corel Painter X3 Gett ing Started Guide P atterns wrap around on their domain so the number one higher than 8 is actually 1, and the number one lower than 1 is actually 8. This is called modular arithmetic. For example, some are found in th e sequences 5678123 or 3218765.
We a v e s 739 Block Expressions Block expressions may be us ed in an interlea ved format. This is parti cularly useful for color sequences like those used in the Scotti sh tartan plaids. For example, one of the Drummond color sequences is expressed as follows: [G 8 R 2 G 2 R 56 G 16 B 2 G 2 B 2 G 36 R 2 G 2 R 8|].
740 Corel Painter X3 Getting Starte d Guide CONCA T The left and right operands are both pattern s of any length. The result is the left operand concatenated with the right operand. We a v e s 741 UPTO The“-” may be used as an up to operator only when the last el ement of the left operand is strictly less than th e first element of the right operand.
742 Corel Painter X3 Getting Starte d Guide The “-” may be used as an downto operator only when the last element of the left operand is str ictly greater tha n th e first element of the right operand. The left and right operands ar e both patterns of any length.
We a v e s 74 3 This template is then applied to each element in the left operand, with the element’s value replacing the root. Remember that the values wr ap around on the domain. PA L I N D R O M E This operator takes only one o perand, the left operand.
744 C orel Painter X3 Getting Starte d Guide The left operand is exten ded to a length that is an integer multiple of the right operand's length. Then the left operand is permuted in ch unks of the right operand's length. The organization of the permutatio n pattern is used to re organize the elements in eac h chunk of the pattern.
We a v e s 745 Then, UPDOWN generates alternating as cending and descending runs. An o dd number of runs is always generated. The ex pansion contains the ascendi ng run from the first element of the left operand to the firs t element of the right operand, followed by the descending run from t here to the second element of the first operand, etc.
746 Corel Painter X3 Gett ing Started Gui de ROT A TE The left operand is a pattern of any length. The right operand is an integer (which ma y be negative) that is interprete d as a length. Rotate takes the set of elements specified by <number> from the start of the pattern and moves them to the end.
We a v e s 747 When two operators have the same preceden ce, left to right ordering is followed. • If precedence doe s the wrong th ing, or if it is un clear , use parenthes es to bring out the intended order of eva luation.
