2 1.1 What are the Main Features of Bay Cat X? Flat scr een, long backlight (l amp) life (60,000 hours). P ortrait or Landscape orientation Bay Cat X is a 46" LCD display that can be w all-mounted or mounted on a stand. The display can be portrait or land- scape.

6 2.1 Inst alling the DVI Board or SDI Board Clarity V isual Systems ships the D VI or SDI boar d sepa rately fr om the Bay Cat X to so me customers and for field upgrades. ✎ The DVI Board is the field-installed video board for the Video Model of Bay Cat X.
7 D VI or SDI board from the anti-static bag. (The DVI board is shown in the pictures belo w .) 6. Carefull y slide the right side of the board in to the slot on the right side of the opening. 7. Align th e connector on the bo ard with the connector in the opening.
8 9. Slide th e D VI or SDI replacement cov er panel into place. Press do wn gently on the insertion end of the panel to help the ta bs insert in the slots.
9 2.2 Inst alling the Bay Cat X W all Bracket The Bay Cat X hangs on its wall br acket in e ither landscape or po rtrait orientation. Installing the wall bra cket The wall bracket comes with each Bay Cat X. See pic- ture in “Y ou Should Ha ve These Accessories” on page 3.
10 2.3 Hanging the Bay Cat X on the W all Bracket The locking system for the Bay Cat X wall brac ket pr events the display fr om jumping off the br ack et during earth tr emors, and it helps deter theft . T wo-person job The Bay Cat X weighs just over 73 lbs.
11 Unlocki ng fr om the s ide : Slide the tool in from the side. It will ride up over the lock and catch it. Pull the lock back to unlock. Unlocking from th e bottom : Slide the tool in f rom the bottom, keep- ing the open side of the hook to the le ft, as shown.
12 2.4 Connecting Power Bay Cat X accepts 110-120 V AC an d 200-240 V A C with no manual switching . Plug the power cord into the r eceptacle on the rear of the Bay Cat X. Plug the other end into a good so urce of A C power . When ready , turn on the po wer switch.

14 2.5 Connecting Picture Sources The Bay Cat X accepts inputs fr om many differ ent sources, depending on configuration Which Configuration Do Y ou Hav e? The Bay Cat X can be ordered in one of three configura- tions: Base Model, V ideo Model, or Bro adcast Model.
15 The Base Model (shown above) has o nly an Analog VGA connector . If the Video Model or Broadcast Model of the Bay Cat X is shipped outside the US, video boards are shipped separately to reduce import duties.
16 2.6 Connecting RS232 Communication RS232 contr ol is not necessary for oper ation, b ut it is a con venient way to con tr ol Bay Cat Xs fr om a distance. RS232 communication allows a computer to control one or more units using the computer’ s serial por t.

20 3.1 Quick S t art After you select the pictur e source , most of the r est of setup is automatic, although you can o verride the automatic settings and adjust anything manually . Selecting the source means choosing the connec tor where the picture is coming in.

22 3.2 Setting up a Bay Cat X The sour ce pictur e—fr om computer , video, D VD—is not always perfect in its size or r esolution; it does not always conform e xactly to a standar d.
23 3.2.1 Selecting the Picture Selecting the sour ce (pictur e) manual ly is usually quick er than using the SETUP bu t to n . Selecting the picture is really selecting the input connector . If you hav e the Base Model, you have only one connector , which is a HD-15 for analog com puter sources.
24 3. Select Source and press E NTER . The Source popup menu displays to the right of the Pic- ture menu. (For space sa vi ng reasons, only the Source popup menu is shown belo w .) 4. Use the up an d down arro w keys on the remote to select the type of source, and press ENTER .
25 Component (YPb Pr) 5. Close th e menu by pressing ENTER , or let it time ou t. The resolution or type of source picture currently coming in is displayed on the line just below Source . This is grayed out because you can’t adjust it. Picture Source Component (YPbPr) Video Standard NTSC 60 Hz/3 .
26 3.2.2 Adjusting Levels for Digit al Computer Sources Digital sour ces do not normally need adjustment , b ut the contr ols ar e ther e if you need them. These controls are adv anced level controls and should not be adjusted unless you have been briefed by the f actory or are familiar with black lev el ad justments.

28 3.2.3 Adjusting Levels for Analog Computer Sources This section applies to Analog R GB (c omputer) pictures only . The Levels ar e be st adjusted semi-automatica lly . Why ad just lev els? For analog RGB pictures the le vels for black and white vary from one computer to another , or from one video pro- cessor to another .
29 5. In t he Input Lev els men u, select Auto Black Level and press ENTER . This menu line says “W orking…” until the process is complete. 6. From the computer source, display an all-white picture. 7. In the Input Lev els men u select Auto White Level and press ENTER .
30 3.2.4 Adjusting Levels for V ideo Sources V ideo sour ces ar e adjusted best if a color bar test pattern is available fr om the vi deo sour ce: the D V D or VCR player . If not, you will have to adjust by eye and the “feel” of the pictur e. Adjusting the pi cture 1.

32 3.2.5 Aspect Ratio and Scale Mode The aspect ratio of any pictur e is its height divided by its width. H / W = Aspect Ratio The nati ve aspect ratio of the Bay Cat X screen is 1.77, which is sometimes referred to as 16:9. This is the WXGA and HDTV picture format.

35 3.2.6 Adjusting Sharpness After you set the Scale Mode to the one you will use for the pr ogram, sel ect the Sharpness le vel in the Pictur e menu to r educe scaling artifacts. If you ar e not scaling your im ag e, you may skip this section. Sharpness Settin gs The Sharpness setting is in the Picture menu.
36 3.2.7 Position This moves the pictur e image on the scr een, but does not move the menus. Image Position In the Picture Position menu, the four arro w keys mo ve the picture. w The Horizont al Position number shows the number of pixels from the beginning of H sync to the f irst activ e pixel.

38 3.3 T iling a Display Whether you use Clarity’ s Big Pictur e™ or an external vi deo pr ocessor , your goal is to make the pictur e fit toge ther pr operly at the edges. Using an external processor The processor di vides a single picture into sev eral sec- tions and sends each part on a separate cable.
39 One way around this i s to adjust th e image. Imagine looking out a window made up of many panes of glass. The image you see is partially obsc ured by the frames, but your mind assembles the image and ignores the fram es.
40 3.4 Saving Y our W ork & Recalling a Memory Some saving is done automatically , but ther e ar e big advanta ges to saving your work manually . How automatic save works Whatev er changes you make wi th the remote co ntrol or RS232 commands, these changes are saved automati cally .

42 3.4.1 Memory: What Is Saved? And Where? Bay Cat X’ s automatic memories work well, b ut the best way to save an d r ecall is with th e number ed memory slots, because the y recall everything. In the Bay Cat X some parameters (values) are associated with the mode .
43 It does not Do Frequency or Phase or an ything else, because it recognizes that this input was used before, and the previous settings are probably correct.
44 3.4.2 Scaling and Cropping Sometimes the pictur e does not fit the arr ay . If the sour ce pi cture is video fr om a D VD, the aspect ra tio is pr obably 1.77 (16x9), the same as HDTV . ✎ The aspect ratio of a picture is it s wid th di vided by its height.
45 • If the picture is too tall for the array and is cropped top and bottom, you can choose To p , Middle , or Bottom . • Similar choices are made if the picture is letterboxed. Border Color determines the color of the “extra” space around the picture i f it doesn’t fill the screen.
46 3.4.3 Adjusting Color Balance Color Balance is used to match the co lors of adjacent d isplays when se veral Bay Cat Xs ar e arranged in an array . Y ou may also u se it to adju st the color of a single display .
47 Adjusting Color T emperature Select Color T emperature in the Color Balance menu and select from 3200°K (W arm), 5500°K, 6500ºK, and 8500°K (Cool). Each of these selects a set of White Balance values to gi ve the picture a warm (3200K) to cool (9500K ) appear- ance.

Continue with other adjacen t displays until all the dis- plays hav e the same appearance when white.
49 3.4.4 Zoom and Position P osition moves the pictur e on the screen. Zoom adjusts the edges of the pictur e to make it f it with the other pic- tur es in an array . Po si t i o n Press the MISC b utton once to open the Picture Position menu. The four arro w keys mo ve the picture on the screen.

51 3.4.5 V iewport Adjustment The V iewport menus adjust the imag e on the LCD. What is V iewpo rt? The V iewport menu ( Main > Size & Position > View- port) adjust the number of pixels actually us ed on the LCD . Y ou can’t increase this numb er , natu rally , but you can reduce it.
52 3.5 Advanced Options Menu Options moves the menus to othe r places on the screen. A uto Adjustment Options sets what will happen automatically and what will not. Menu Options These controls mov e the menu to a different position on the screen or rotate it for Portrait or ientation.
53 • When you press the SETUP button. Retry on lost si gnal occurs only when the present signal (picture) disappears or changes in some way . If this item is not checked, the Bay Cat X will not try to sync to a new signal. Keep this menu item checked.
54 ✎ It may help to set the Scale Mode to one to one in the Aspect Ratio menu before st arting the logo capture. (although it w ill work from any scale mode). This will allow you to visualize the true size of the capt ured image relative to th e screen.
55 8. When captur e is complete, the following note displays: 9. On th e remote, press M ENU to dismiss the note and the Logo Capture menu from the screen. 10. T o see the custom splash screen, on the remote, press CURT AIN . Depending on the size of the captured image and the po sitioning choices, t he logo may take up to a minute to display .
56 3.5.1 Miscellaneous Options This menu holds se veral unr elated settings. Curt ain Pattern determines what the screen will show when there is no source picture.

58 3.5.2 Backlight Control Backlight contr ol can automatically adjust the scr een brightness as ambient light conditions change . T o get to the Backligh t Control menu, g o to Main Menu > Advanced Options > Backlight Settings . w Backlight control has two options: automatic and man- ual.
59 Manual backlight control This mode is useful when the Bay Cat X is in a room with no outside windows and unchanging ambient ligh t lev- els. Set the Backlight Control Mode to Manual . Adjust the Backlight Intensity to comfortabl e bright- ness. A lower brightness will increase lamp life.
60 3.5.3 Serial Port Settings This applies only if you use RS232 commands to contr ol the Bay Cat X. If you wish to control Bay Cat Xs remotely with RS232 commands from a computer , read this section. Otherw ise, skip it. Bay Cat Xs can be linked together for RS232 using straight-through 8-conductor cable with RJ-45 connectors.
61 The ID is in two parts, Group ID and Unit ID. Each of these has a range of 0–9, A–Z. This range results in 1296 possible addresses. Y ou can group the Bay Cat Xs by using the same letter or number of the Group ID, such as 8.
62 3.6 Other Operations T o change sources ( input connectors) Press the SOURCE button on the remote. Bay Cat X will look for the next connector that has a picture coming in, select that one, and auto adjust to it. Or use the Source menu. 1. Press MENU on the remot e.
63 Input system caches Settings (position, aspect ratio , brightness/contrast, color balance) are sav ed auto matically 5 seconds after you make a change.

66 4.1 Cleaning the Screen Clean the scr een with a soft cloth or lint-fr ee paper towel and a mild cleaning solution. Cleaning products and how to use them For protecti ve glass and the LCD screen itself, a foam spray cleaner seems to work well. It’ s is sold under differ- ent names in dif ferent parts of the world.
