30 Preparations • If the wireless controller does not work, check that [W ireless Remote Control] is not set to [ Of f ] ( 148). Otherwise , replace the battery . Accessories Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with yo ur in dex finger , and the button with yo ur thumb.
Preparations 31 Adjusting the Position and Brightness of the LCD Screen Rotating the LCD Panel Open the LCD panel 90 degrees. • Y ou can rotate the panel 90 degrees downward.
32 Preparations • Repeat this action to turn the LCD ba cklight on (bright) or off (normal). • If [LCD Screen Dimmer] is set to [ On] ( 147), pressing for more than 2 seconds will turn off the screen dimmer and return the LCD screen to it s previous brightness setting.

Preparations 35 Joystick and Joystic k Guide Use the joystick to o perate the camcor der's menus. If the joystick guide do es not appear on the screen, pr ess or push the joystick ( , ) to display it. The functions that appear depend on the operating mode.
36 Preparations Selecting an O ption from the FUN C. Menu Following is an ex ample of selectin g a FUNC. menu option in mode (the operation is similar in mode). In playback modes, the operation varies depending on the func tion selected so refer to the r el- evant chapter as nece ssary .
Preparations 37 • Move ( ) the orange selection bar to the tabs at the top of the screen to select a different menu (step 3). 5 Select ( ) the desired option and press to save the setting. Some options, like brightness and volume settings, need to be adjusted by pushing the joystick ( ).
38 Preparations First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcorder before you can star t using it. The [D ate/Time] s creen will appear automaticall y when the cam- corder’ s clock is not set. When the [Date/Time] scr een appears, the year will be s elected.
Preparations 39 Changing the Language The default la nguage of the camcorder is English. Y ou can set it to one of 22 other languages. [ Menu] [ Language ] Desired language NOTES • The displays and that appear in some menu screens refer to the name of buttons on the camcord er and will not change, regard less of the language selected.
40 Preparations Using a Memory Card Memory Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use comm ercially available SDHC (SD high capacity) memory car ds and SD memory car ds with this camcorder . How- ever , depending on its Speed Class, you may no t be able to r ecor d movies on the memo ry card.
Preparations 41 Inserting and Removing a Memor y Card Make sure to i nitialize all memor y cards bef ore usi ng them with this camcor der ( 42). 1 T ur n off the camcor der . Make sure the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover .

Video 47 Zooming mode: In addition to the optical zoom, digital zo om is also avail - able ( 142). 10x Optical Zoom Move the zoom lever toward W (wide angle) to zoom out. Move it toward T (telephoto) to zoom in. By default, the zoom lever operates at a variable speed – press gently for a slow zoom; press har der for faster zooms.
48 Video Quick Start Function When you close the LCD panel with the camcor der on, the camcor der enters the standby mode. In stan dby mode the camc order consumes only about 1/3 the po wer used when recording, saving energy when you are using a battery pack.

By default, the index screen will show up to 6 items (scenes or photos).

62 Video Changing the Shutter Speed and Aperture Select the [ Prog rammed AE] r ecording pr ogram to us e functions like the white balance or imag e effe cts. Select one of the othe r automatic exposure r ecording prog rams to contr ol the shutter speed o r apertur e.

Video 65 Using an Exter nal Vide o Light Y ou can use the optional VL-5 Video Light or VFL-2 Video Flash Light when you need a video li ght that is st r onger than the bui lt-in mini vi deo light. Attach the optional video ligh t to the mini advanced shoe.
66 Video Combining Vide o Snapshot Scenes with Mu sic 1 Open the original movies index screen and press . • The button’ s blue light will turn on and only vide o snapshot scenes will appear in the index screen. • Y ou can select the original movies in the built-in memory or on the memory card ( 51).

70 Video Manual Exposure Adjustment a nd Automatic Backlight Correction At times, backlit subjects may appe ar too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under ve ry strong lights may appear to o bright or glaring (overex- posed). T o correct this, you ca n manually adjus t the exposure or use the automatic back light correction.
Video 71 Automatic Backli ght Correction When shooting subjects with a stro ng light source behind them, you can have the camcor der automatically corr ect for the backlight. 1 Open ( ) the joystick guide. 2 Select ( ) [ BLC] and press . • appears.
72 Video 4 Adjust ( ) the focus as required, then hide ( ) the joystick. • The selected focus will be loc ked. • During focus lock, press twi ce to return the camcorder to autofo cus. NOTES • This function can also be assign ed to the custom key/dial ( 8 5).
Video 73 3 If there is mor e than one person in the picture, select ( ) the main subject. Move the white detection frame to the person for whom you want to optimize the camcorder’ s settings. NOTES • The camcorder may mistakenly de tect the faces of non-human sub- jects.
74 Video White Balance The white balance f unction helps you to accurately reproduce colors under differ ent lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recor dings. POINTS TO CHECK • Select a recor ding program other th an the Special Scene r ecording pr o- grams.
Video 75 To set the custom whi te balance 1 Point the camco rder at a white object, zo om in until it fills the who le screen and pr ess . When the adjustment is completed, stops flashing and stays on. The camcorder retains the custom se ttin g even if you turn off the camcorder .

80 Video • While the digi tal tele-converter is activated, photos cannot be recorded simultaneously at [ 3264x1840] size. Audio Recording Level Y ou can adjust the audio r ecording level of the built-in or an external micro phone. Y ou can display the audio level indica tor while r ecor ding.
Video 81 NOTES • When the audio level meter reaches the red point (0 dB mark), the sound may be distort ed. • If the audio level is t oo high and the sound gets distorted, activate the microphone attenuator ( 143).

84 Video Using an External Microphone When recor ding in very quiet surr oundings, the built-in microphone may pick up the sound of the camcorder's inter nal machinery .
Video 85 Using the Custom Key and Dial Y ou can assign to the button an d dial one of five frequently used functions. Y ou can then adjust the selected function using the button and dial, without ha ving to access any menus.
86 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Dividing Scenes Y ou can divide scenes ( original scenes onl y) in order to leave out the best parts and later cut out the rest. 1 Open the original movies index screen. Y ou can select the original movi es in the built-in memory or on the memory card ( 51).
Video 87 - Scenes that were not r e corded with this camcorder . • Scenes cannot be divided within 0.5 seconds from the beginning or the end of the scene. • During the playback of a scene that was d ivided, you may notice some anomalies in the pict ur e/sound at the point wher e the scene was cut.
88 Video • Press on the camcorder or on the wireless controller to switch between the original movi es index screen and the playlist. NOTES • Deleting or moving scenes in the pl aylis t will not aff ect the original recordings.
