2 Introduction Introduction This Quick S tart Guide uses the following symbol s to indica te important information. Always observe the instructions indicated by these symbols. 3 Safety Precautions Safety Precautions Please read the safety warnings and cautions prov ided in this manual to ensure that you use the machine safely . Do not attempt to use the mach ine in any way not described in th is manual. Wa r n i n g z This produ ct emits low level magn etic flux.
4 Safety Precautions Cleaning the machine Use a damp cloth to clean the machine. Never use flammable solvents such as alcohol, benzene or thinners. If flammable solvents come in contact with electrical components inside the machine, it could cause a fire or electric shock.
5 Safety Precautions Working around the machine Never put your hands or fingers in the machine while it is printing. When moving the machine, carry the machine at both ends. Do not hold the Operation Panel. Do not place any object on the machine. Do not place metal objects (paper clips, staples, etc.
6 Before Using the Machine Before Using the Machine Included Items Check that all the following items are in the box . If anything is missing or damaged, contact your Canon service representative.
7 Before Using the Machine (3) F A X button Switches the machine to fax mode. (4) SCAN button Switches the machine to scan mode. In sc an mode, the machine scans a document to your computer according to the settings sele cted. T o use this button, the machine must be connected to a co mputer .
8 Before Using the Machine (20) OK button Finalizes your selection for the menu or setting item. This button is also used to dismiss the error message and resume the machine’s normal operation after resolving a printing error or removing jammed paper , or to eject documents remaining in the ADF .
9 Before Using the Machine How to Navigate Menus on the LCD Y ou can make good use of the various functions of the machine w ith the menu screen and the settings screen on the LCD. This section describes how to use the menu screen and the setting s screen.

12 Before Using the Machine Basic Operation on the Settings Scree n Y ou can change the print settings such as page size, media type, etc. o n the settings screen either in the copy mode, in the memory card m ode, in the fax mode, or when printing directly from a PictBridge compliant device.

Note When you wa nt to restore the di splay , perform any op eration such as copying, faxin g, or scanning, or press any but ton except f or the ON/OFF button.
16 Before Using the Machine Handling the Original Document This section describes how to load the original docu ment on the Platen Glass or in the ADF .
17 Before Using the Machine Using the Platen Glass 1 Open the Document Cover . 2 Load the original document with the side to be copied, scanned, or faxed facing down on the Plat en Glass. z T o make copies or scan documen t s Align the original document with the alignment mark as shown in the figure on the right.
18 Before Using the Machine z T o scan pho tographs Place the photograph at least 0 .4 inches / 10 mm away from and in square with the ed ges of the Platen Glass. (B) 0.4 inches / 10 mm When setting two or more photographs at the same time, place them at least 0.

20 Before Using the Machine Loading Printing Paper This section describes how to load printing paper in the Rear Tray and the Cassette. Using S pecialty Media Canon recommends that you use Canon genuine media to ensure optimal print qua lity . Note z At purcha se, the machine is set to feed from the Casset te.
21 Before Using the Machine Paper Handling z Recommended Paper and Requirement s * 1 Paper with a Model Number is Canon specia lty media. R efer to the instruction manual supplied with the paper for detailed information on the printable side and notes on handling paper .
22 Before Using the Machine * 2 Proper feeding of paper may not be possi ble at the maximum capacity depending on the type of paper or environmental conditions (eit her very h igh or low temperature and humidity). In such cases, reduce the sheets of paper you load at a time to around half.
23 Before Using the Machine z Paper that is not rectangular z Paper bound with staples or glue z Paper with adhesives z Paper decorated with glitter , etc. Hint s for Handling t he Paper Sources This machine offers two paper sources to load printing paper; the Rear Tray (A) and the Cassette (B).
24 Before Using the Machine z If Y ou Print Regularly on Photo Paper as we ll as on Plain Paper If you use photo paper as much as plain paper , you can load photo paper in the Rear Tray and plain paper in the Cassette. This way , you can switch the paper source according t o the type of paper just by pressing the Feed Switch .
25 Before Using the Machine Changing the Paper Source Each time you press the Feed Switch , the paper source to be used switches between the Rear T ray and the Cassette.
26 Before Using the Machine Loading Paper z Loading Paper in the Rear T ray 1 Flatten the four corners of the paper before loading it. Import ant z Load A4, Le tter , or Legal-size d plain pa per when rece iving faxes. L egal-sized p aper can o nly be loaded in t he Rear T ray .
27 Before Using the Machine 2 Prepare to load paper . (1) Open the Rear Tr ay Cover and pull out the Paper Support. Put your finger in the rounded indent of the Paper Support and pull it out until it stops. (2) Open the Paper Output Tr ay . Press the Open button to open the Paper Output T ray .
28 Before Using the Machine z Loading Paper in the Cassette Some types and sizes of paper are not loadable in the Cassette and require the use of the Rear T ray . If you intend to use only the Cassette, chec k for any usage restrictions in advance. See “Paper Handling” on page 21.
29 Before Using the Machine 4 Insert the Cassette into the machine. Push the Cassette all the way into the machine. 5 Open the Paper Outpu t T r ay . (1) Open the Paper Output Tr ay . Press the Open button to open the Paper Output T ray . (2) Open the Output Tray Extension.
30 Before Using the Machine Loading Envelopes Use either European DL or US Comm. Env . #10-sized envelope. With proper printer driver settings, the a ddress will be printed according to the direction of envelope. z Loading Envelopes in the Re ar T ray 1 Prepare the envelopes.
31 Before Using the Machine 2 Load the envelop es. (1) Load the envelope against the Cover Guide (the right side of the Paper Support). Load with the address side facing UP and the rear flaps DOWN on the left. Up to 10 envelopes can be loaded at once.

33 Before Using the Machine Loading Small-Sized Paper Y ou can use 4" x 6" / 101.6 x 152.4 mm, 5" x 7" / 127.0 x 177.8 mm, and Credit card-sized pap ers . z Loading Small-Sized Paper in the Re ar T ray (1) Load the small-sized paper against the Cover Guide (the right side of the Paper Support) with the print side facing UP .
34 Before Using the Machine z Loading Small-Sized Paper in the Ca ssette (1) Align the paper stack against the right side of the Cassette with the print side facing DOWN. (2) Slide the Paper Guides against the sides of the paper stack. (3) Press the Feed Switch so that the Cassette lamp lights.
35 Copying Copying Making Copies This section describes the basic procedure to make copies. For details, refer to “Copying” in the User ’s Guide on-screen manual. 1 T urn on the machine . See “T urning the Machine On and Off” on page 14. 2 Press the COPY button to select the copy mode if another mode has been selected.
36 Copying Setting Items Press the Settings button in the copy mode to change the c opy settings such as page size, media type, and print quality . z Ta b 1 Y ou can specify the settings of the printing paper , prin t quality , etc. (1) Page size Select the page size of the loaded paper .
37 Copying (5) Auto in tensity S pecify whether the intensity is adjusted automatically when copy ing originals loaded on the Platen Glass. When Auto intensity ON is selected, Auto will be displayed in the intensity slide bar on the copy screen.

The scanned data can be sent to one of the computers connected over a network as well as to a computer connected via U SB.
50 Scanning Images Scanning Using the Operatio n Panel on the Machine 1 (Macintosh only) Prepare your computer before scanning. This operation is not necessary for Mac OS X v .10.4.x. For details, refer to “Scanning Methods” in the User ’s Guide on-screen manual.

59 Faxing Methods of Connecting to t he V arious Lines The following are some basic connection scheme s that apply when you are connecting to a non- analog telephone line. These are examples an d could not be guaranteed to suit every connecting condition.
60 Faxing Setting the T e lephone Line T ype Before using your machine, make sure you se t the correct telephon e line type for your telephone line. If you are unsure of your telephone line type, contact your telephone company . For ISDN or xDSL connections, contact the telephone company or service provider to confirm your line type.

62 Faxing Registering Sender Information A fax you receive may have information, such as the send er ’s name or the company name, the sender ’s phone or fax number , and the date and time of the transmissio n, printed in small type at the top of each page.
63 Faxing Guidelines for Entering Numbers, Letters, and Symbols The following characters are assigned to the Numeric buttons. * SP indicates a space. Follow the procedure below to enter letters and numbers when you regist er names and fax/ phone numbers for the sender information or a speed dial.
64 Faxing z T o delete an entire entry: Press and hold the [ button. Entering the Date and T ime 1 Display the FA X m e n u screen. (1) Press the FA X button, then press the Menu button. The FA X m e n u screen is displayed. 2 Display the Device settin gs screen.
65 Faxing 5 Enter the date and time. (1) Use the Numeric buttons to enter the date and time (in 24-hou r format), then press the OK button. Enter only the last two digits of the year . 6 Press the OK button to finalize your setting. The display returns to the User sett ings screen.

71 Faxing Registering Recipient s for the Speed Dial S pe ed dial allows you to dial fax/telephone number s by simply pressing a fe w buttons. The following speed dial methods are available: z One-touch Speed Dial Register a fax/telephone number for one- touch sp eed dial.

73 Faxing Registering Coded S peed Dial Before you can use coded speed dial, you need to r egister the recipients’ numbers. 1 Display the FA X m e n u screen. (1) Press the FA X button, then press the Menu button. The FA X m e n u screen is displayed.

80 Faxing Sending Faxes Flow of Sending Faxes The operation flow of sending faxes is as follow s. Step 1 Load the original to send on t he Platen Glass or in the ADF . See “Handling the Original Document” on page 16. Step 2 Adjust the image quality ( Fax resolution ) and density ( Scan co ntrast ).
81 Faxing Before Sending Faxes z Adjusting the Image Q uality (Fax resolution ) Y ou can adjust the image quality (fax resolution) of the original you send. The higher you set the image quality setting, the better the output quality will be at the other end, but the longer it will take for the transmission.
82 Faxing Sending Fax es This section describes methods of sending faxes and dialing functions of the machine. z Sending a Fax using the Numeric Buttons z Sending a Fax after S peaking on T elepho.

The machine starts sending. z When the document was loaded i n the ADF: The machine scans the document automatically and starts sending.

85 Faxing z Sending a Fax using the S peed Dial Registering fax or telephone numbers in s peed dials enables yo u to send faxes easily . 1 Dial the recipient’s number . z T o send using the on e-touch speed dial: Press the One-T ouch Speed Dial button (01 to 08) assigned t he number you want to dial.
86 Faxing 1 Enter the recipients’ numbers one by one using th e Numeric buttons or speed dial. z When using One-tou ch speed dial: Press the One-T ouch Speed Dial button (01 to 08) assigned t he number you want to dial.
87 Faxing Resending Faxes (Redialing a Busy Number) There are two methods of redialing: Ma n ual redialing and Au tomatic redialing. z Automatic Redialing When sending a document and the recipient’s line is busy , the ma chine will redial the number after a specified interval.
88 Faxing Using Useful Sending Functions Using the Information Services Y ou can use many information services such as banks, airl ine reservations, or hotel reservations. These services require tone dial ing for their services, so that you need to temporarily switch to tone dialing if your machine is connected to a rotary pulse line.
89 Faxing 4 When the recorded message for the information service answers, press the To n e ( ) button to switch to tone dialing. 5 Use the Numeric butto ns to press the number b y following the message. 6 Press the Hook button to finish using the servi ce.
90 Faxing Receiving Faxes Flow of Receiving Faxes The operation flow of receiving faxes is as follows: Step 1 Select a receive mode. See “Selecting a Receive Mode” on page 90. Step 2 Load A4, Letter , or Legal-sized paper . See “Loading Printing Paper” on page 20.
91 Faxing z If Y ou Are Using a Single T elephone Line for Faxes and V oice Calls and W a nt to Receive Faxes Automati cally: Select F AX priority mode . (A) Incoming call (B) V oice call: The ma chine will ring. Pick up the handset to answer the call.
92 Faxing z If Y ou Are Using a Single T elephone Line for Faxes and V oice Calls and Use V oice Calls More Frequently: Select TEL priority mode . (A) Incoming call (B) V oice call: The t elephone will ring. Pick up the handset to answer th e call. (C) Fax: The teleph one will ring.
93 Faxing z If Y ou Subscribe to a Dis tinctive Ring Pattern Detection (DRPD) Service with Y our T elephone Comp any (US and Canada only): Select DRPD . (A) Incoming call: The machine judges w hether call is voice or fax by the ringing pattern. In the meanwhile the telephone rings.
94 Faxing Setting the Receive Mod e 1 Display the FA X m e n u screen. (1) Press the FA X button, then press the Menu button. The FA X m e n u screen is displayed. 2 Display the Receive mode settin gs screen. (1) Use th e [ or ] button to select Receive mode settings , then press the OK button.
95 Faxing Setting the DRPD Ring Pattern (US and Canada only) If you subscribe to a Distinctive Ring Pattern Detectio n service with your telephone company , your telephone company will assi gn two.
96 Faxing Changing th e Print Settings The machine prints received faxes to paper from the specified paper source. Y ou can change the paper settings for printing faxes using the Operation Pa nel. Set them according to the loaded paper properly . 1 Press the FA X button.
97 Faxing (2) The paper type is set to Plain p aper . (3) Select the fax paper source from Cassette , Rear tray , or Auto feed switch . 5 Press the Settings button .
98 Faxing Using Useful Receiving Functions Memory Receiving If the machine receives a fax under one of the foll owing conditions, the mach ine will not be able to print the received fax and will stor e it in its memory . When the problem is resolved as described, the fax stored in memory is printed automatically .
99 Faxing Document S tored in Memory In the following cases, the machine is not able to print the received fax and will automatically store the fax in its memory: z Ink has run out while receiving a fax. z Paper has run out while receiving a fax. z Paper other than A4, Letter , or Legal-sized paper is loaded.
100 Faxing 4 Print a specified document or the memory list. z T o print a specified document (1) Use th e { or } button to select Print specified docum ent , then press the OK button. (2) Use th e { or } button to select the transaction number (TX/RX NO.
