2 Introducti on Thank you for purchasing the Canon DR-2010M/DR-2510M Document Scann er. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the scanner to fam iliarize yourself with its capabilities, and to mak e the most of its m any functions. A fter reading this manual, store it in a s afe place for future reference.
3 Important Safety In structi ons To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, be sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this scanner is affected by the enviro nment in which it is installed.
4 Moving the Scan ner ● When moving the scanner, always hold it with both hands to avoid dropping it. The scanner weighs approximately 5.3 lb (2.4 kg). ● Make su re to disconnect the interface cable and AC adapt er before moving the s canner. If the scanner is transported with these items connected, the plug s and connector s may be d amaged.
5 ■ Do not allow water or flammable substances (alcohol, paint t hinner, benzene, etc.) to spill into the scanner, as this may res ult in a fire or electric shock. ■ Turn OFF t he power switch f or safety when not using the scanner for a long per iod of time, such as overnight.
6 Features of t he DR-2010M/D R-2510M Docume nt Scanner The main features of the DR-2010M/D R-2510M document s canner are described below. ● Compact Size The dimensions of the scanner are as follows: 11.7" (298 mm)(W) x 9.8" (245 mm)(H) x 19.
7 ● Auto Start The scanner is equipped with an auto start function, w hich enables scanning to be automatically starte d when a document placed in the feeder is detected. ● Sleep Mode The scanner is designed to save energy by entering the sleep mode when it is not scanning documents.
8 Names and F unctions of Parts This section describes the name and function of each part. Make sure to read this section and familiarize yourself wit h the parts of the scanner before using the scanner.
9 Do cum ents The scanner can scan docu ments ranging in size from business cards and checks to LTR/A4 . The document sizes that this scanner can sc an are shown below. Plain Pape r Size Width: 1.97" to 8.5" (50 m m to 216 mm) Length: 2 .12" to 14.
10 Placing Do cuments 1 Open th e documen t feed tray. • Open the document eject tray when you want to stack output documen ts. You can also perform s canning without opening the tray. • If the document hangs over t he edge of the eject tray, open the extension tray (See p.
11 IMPORTANT • Befor e you place a document, check to make sure it does not contain paper clips, staples, or ot her small metal objects. Thes e items ma y cause a fire or electrical shock, da mage the doc ument, or cause a paper jam or scanner malfunction.
12 Supplied Softwar e Use the following software supplied wit h the scanner to scan documents. Select which softwa re to use based on your intended purpose. CaptureOnTouch This scanning application, designed sp ecifically for use with this scanner, allows you to scan us ing easy-to-follow on-screen instructions.
13 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch What is Capt ureOnTouch? CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application t hat allows you to s can documents using easy-to-fo llow on-screen instructions. CaptureOnTouch provides multip le sc anning methods for you to select based on your intended purpose.
14 Starting Ca ptureOnTouc h CaptureOnTouch resides on your system when you st art up your computer, and a CaptureOnTouch icon appears on the menu bar (default). When you double-click (Captur eOnTouch), CaptureO nTouch starts and the m ain screen appears.
15 Scan Fi rst Operation Fl ow 1 Place the doc umen t in the scanne r (See p. 10). 2 Click the [ Scan Firs t] tab. The main s creen for [Sc an First] appears. 3 Click [Scan ner setting ] to display the [Scanne r setting] dialog box, a nd co nfigure th e scan ner set tings.
16 5 Specify the output method. 6 Configure settings for the output method, and click the output button t o output the sca nned images . The name of the output button differs depending on the selected output method. If yo u select [Save to folder] for the output m ethod, for example, the output button appears as [ Save].
17 Output Method Settings CaptureOnTouch provides four output me thods for pr ocessing scanned im ages. The output settings that appear differ depending on the output method selected. Confirming Output In [Select Scan Job], scanned images are output acc ording to the registered job settings.
18 Starting [Scan First] with the Job Button Under default settings, [Scan First] is assigned to the first job button on the scanner. When you press job button 1 after placing your doc ument in the scanner, CaptureO nTouch starts up and [Scan First ] begins.
19 Select Scan Job Operation Fl ow Registering/Editing Jobs In CaptureOnTouch, y ou can re gister up to 10 jobs for use with [Selec t Scan Job]. 1 Click the [ Select Scan Jo b] tab. The main s creen for [Select S can Job] appea rs. 2 Clic k th e [Re gi ster new job ] bu tton .
20 [Output s ettings] tab Configure settings for the output method. The items that app ear in this tab differ depending on t he [Output method] selected. [Scanner setting] tab Configure scan conditions. [Button assignmen t] tab Configure settings to assign the job to a job button on the sc anner.
21 Selecting Scan Jobs 1 Place the doc umen t in the scanne r (See p. 10). 2 Click the [ Select Scan Jo b] tab. The main s creen for [Select S can Job] appea rs. 3 Click a job in the [Job li st]. 4 Clic k th e [S tart ] but ton . The document is scanned.
22 Starting [Select Scan Job] with the Job Buttons Under default settings, jobs are pre-assigned to the second and third job buttons on the scanner. When you press job button 2 or 3 af t er placing your document in the scanner, CaptureOnT ouch starts up and scanning begins a ccording to the assigned job settings.
23 Troubleshooting Common Pro blems an d Soluti ons This section prov ides recom mended solutions to c ommon problems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Problem 1 The scanner will not turn on.
24 Clear ing a Paper Ja m When paper jams occur during sca nning, use the following proced ure to clear them. CAUTION When removing jammed paper, take care not to cut your hands on the edges of the p aper. 1 Remove an y docum ents that hav e been left in the eject tray .
25 2 Press the OPEN knob from bo th sides ( a ), and pull the front unit out and downwa rd to open it ( b ). 3 Remove the jammed doc ument from the doc ument feeding side or doc ument ejecting s ide. IMPORTANT Make sure to pull the document out carefully, without applying too much force.
26 Appendix Replaci ng Consum ables The scanner's Feed Roller and the Retard Roller are both consumables. They are subject to gradual wear during scanning. As the rollers wear, docum ents will eventually no longer feed properly, and paper jams will result.
27 Replacing the Feed Roller 1 Spread t he docume nt guides all the way to the left and right, an d open t he roller c over. 2 Lift the rol ler fixing lever, and slide it to the left. 3 Remove the feed roller and insta ll a new one. At this time, ensu re that the not ched end mates with th e shaft in the scan ner.
28 2 Lift the rol ler fixing lever, and slide it to the right. 3 Slide the retard roller to the r ight to disconnect t he shaf t, and insert the n ew roller. At this time, ensure that the notched end of the ro ller shaft mates wit h the shaft i n the Front Unit.
29 Resetting the Counter 1 Start Im age Capture. To start Image Cap ture, click the hard disk icon (e.g. [ Macintosh HD]), the [Applications] folder, and then the [Image Capture] icon. 2 Click [B rowse Device s] in the [Devi ces] me nu. 3 Select the scanner you want to us e, and select the [Use TWAIN so ftware] check box.
