Prepa rations 25 Stylus Pen Stra ps To attach an optional wris t strap Pass the attachin g end of the wrist strap through the rear bracket on the cam- corder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wr ist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra conv enience and prote ction.

Prepa rations 29 Basic Operation o f the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The contr o l buttons and menu it ems that appear on the t ouch screen change d ynamically depending on the operatin g mode and the t ask you ar e perfor ming. Y ou can e asily op erate the touch scr een using your finger or the supplied stylus pen.

32 Prepa rati ons Using the Menus Many of the camcor der’ s functions can be adjuste d fro m the FUNC. panel and the setup menus. In mode, however , most menus can- not be acces sed and, except in a few cases, m ost menu settings w ill return to their default values.

34 Prepa rati ons First Time Set tings Setting the D ate and Time Y ou will need to s et the date and time of the camcor der befor e y ou can start using it. The [D ate/Time] scre en will appear automatically when t he cam- cord er’ s clock is not set.
Prepa rations 35 Changing the Language The default language of the ca mcorder is English. Y ou can set it to one of 27 languages. * Only wh en performin g the procedure in a recording mode. Prepa rations 37 SDXC Memory Cards Use SDXC memory car ds only with SDXC-co mpatible dev ices, such as SDXC-compati ble digital reco rders , computers and car d r eaders. T he table below summarizes compatib ilit y by computer operating system, as of October 2010.

Smart AUTO Mode 47 Zoomin g The camcorder offers three types of zoom - op tical, advanced and dig- ital. For optica l zoom, the camcorder uses t he optic al magnifica tion ratio of the lens.

Smart AUTO Mode 49 Qui ck St art Fu ncti on When you cl o se t he LCD pane l with the camcor der on, the cam cor der enter s the stand by mode. In stand by mode th e camcor der c onsumes only about 1/3 the p ower used when r ecording, s aving ener gy when you ar e using a bat tery pa ck.

54 Video 3D Flip View 3D Flip View is a fun way to display yo ur video recordings (original scenes) in a 3D layout, or ganized by reco rding date. In the date index screen, touch [ ] .
Video 55 In any index screen, touch [ b ]. During si ngle photo vi ew , touch t he scr een once to d isplay the contr ols then touch [ Q ] t o open the [Photos] index scr een. Opt ions NOTES • Fast /slow playbac k modes are not avail able for scenes conve rted to standard definition.
56 Video Deleting Scenes Y ou can delete those scenes tha t yo u are not interested in keeping. Deleting scen es allows you also to fr ee up space on the memor y . See also Deleting Scenes and Stories from the Gallery ( 0 90). 1 In the date index screen, open the screen that contains the scenes you want to delete.

58 Video Advanced Functions Shooting Video in Flexible Recording Mode When the camcor der is in (fle xib le reco rding) mode, you ca n enjoy full access to the menus and manually adjust th e exposur e, focus, whi te balanc e and many more o f the camcorder's s ettings to your pr eference.

64 Video Image Stabil ization The image stabili zer red uces camcor der blur (blur due to the cam- cord er moving) so you can get nice, stable shots . Select the image sta - bilization mode according to the shooting conditions. In mode, this function is set to [ Q Stand ard] and cannot be changed.
Video 65 Pre-Rec ording The camcord er will start r ecording 3 seconds befor e you pr ess g , ensu rin g yo u do no t miss importa nt sh oot ing oppo rtuni - ties. Thi s is especially usef ul when it is diff icult to pred ict when to start reco rd ing .
66 Video Face Detection The camcor der automati cally detects people’ s faces and uses this information to select the optimal settings for beautiful videos and pho- tos. POINTS TO CH ECK • Sel ect a recording program oth er th an [ q Night Scene], [ p Low Light] or [ M Firewor ks].
Video 67 • Face detecti on cannot be used when the shut ter speed us ed is slower than 1/30 (1/24 if th e frame rate is set to [ E PF24]) or when t he digi- tal zoom is a ctivated at mor e than 80x zoom.
68 Video Video S naps hot Recor d a series of short scenes or captur e short scenes from a movie you have previously recorded. Play your video snapshot scen es set to your favorite mus ic ( 0 82) to cr eate your own fun music video. Y ou will be surprised how by changing the b ackground music, you can give your scenes an entire ly new feel.

Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, bac klit subjec ts may appear too dark (under exposed) or sub- jects under ve ry strong lights m ay appear too bright or glaring (overex- posed).
Video 71 NOTES • If the reco rd ing pr ogra m is changed durin g exposur e lock, the cam- cor der will ret ur n to automa tic exposur e. • When shoot ing subje cts wit h a str ong light sour ce behind them, the camcord er automatical ly correc ts for the ba cklight.
72 Video 3 T ouch and hold [ l ] or [ W ] to adjus t the focus. • The center of the screen will be ma gnifi ed to he lp you foc us mo re easily . Y ou can also turn off this function with the 7 8 [Focus Assistance] setting. • The fo cusi ng distan ce displayed will cha nge as you adj ust the focus.

76 Video 2 T ouch and hold [ y ] or [ A ] to ad just the audio recording level as necessary . • As a guid eline, adjust the audio recording level so t hat th e audi o level meter will go to the right of the -12 dB mark only occasionally .
Video 77 Using Headphones Use head phones for p layba ck or t o check the audio l ev el w hile r ecord- ing. T he headpho nes ar e connecte d to the A V OUT/ X terminal, which is used for both the headphones and t he audio/v ideo output.
78 Video IMPORT AN T • When usi ng headphone s, make sur e to lower t h e vol ume to an appr o- priate le vel. • Do not connect the headphon es to the A V OUT/ X termina l if the J icon does not appe ar on the s cre en. The noi se output in suc h case ma y be harmful to your hea ring.
Video 79 Using ot her micro phones Connect t he external micr ophone to the MIC t ermin al. Use commerci ally available con- denser microphones with their own power supply . Y ou can connect almo st any st er eo mic ro phone with a ∅ 3. 5 mm plug but a udio record- ing levels ma y vary .

82 Video Playing Back Scenes or Slideshow Set to Background Music Y ou can pl ay back s cenes in t he date i ndex scree n, stor ies in t he gal- lery and photo slides hows set to backgr ound music. Y ou can use one of the suppl ied music track s or connect an external audio play er to use your favorite s ongs as bac k gr ound music.
Video 83 To play back scenes from the date index screen 3 T ouch a scene. To play back from a particu lar scene in a story 3 Select the s tory that contai ns the scenes to play back. Drag your finger right/left to bri ng the desired story to the fr ont.
84 Video 4 Play back t he scenes with a particular rating. To play back a slides how from the photo in dex screen 3 T ouch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slideshow procedure ( 0 109). To delete a music track In the music track select ion scr een, touch [ Z ] or [ O ] to select the track you want to delete.

Video 87 Onscreen Displays and D ata Code Y ou can turn most onscreen displa ys on or off. Repeatedly press h to turn the onscreen displays on/off in the following sequence: mode: • All disp lay.
88 Video • Sel ect [ B Off] to deactivate rat i ng scenes afte r recor ding. After you finish r ecor ding a scene, you can s elect one of the fo llowing rating mark s for the scene. [ ], [ ], [ ]: R ates the scene with t hree , two or one star , respect ively .
Video 89 Rating S cenes Du ring Play back 1 Play back from th e gallery the story that contains the scenes you want to rate. 2 During playback of a scene you want to rate, pause the playback and rate th e scene. 3T o u c h [ A ] to resume the playback and rate o ther scenes in th e same way or touch [ B ] to return t o the gallery .
90 Video Galler y and Scene O perations Managing Stories The gallery initi ally contains two group s, [Unsorted] for your r egular scenes and [ V ideo Snapshot ] for your vid eo snapsho t scenes. In add i- tion, you can create new gr oups, or “sto ries”, which contain scenes of your choosing, arranged in an order to your liking.
Video 91 To delete indivi dual scenes 1 From the gallery s creen, select the story that contains the scene to delete. 2 Delete the s cene. • The scen e is delete d and the gall ery scr een appears. To de lete scen es by rating Y ou can delete all the scenes in a story with a p articular rating.
92 Video To delete a story Y ou can dele te new sto ries that you have c reated . 1 From the gallery screen, select t he story to delet e. Drag yo ur finge r right /left to br ing the desired sto ry to the fron t. 2 Delete the story . * T ouch [Stop] to interrupt the operation while it is in progr e ss.
Video 93 4 T ouch [Move] or [Copy]. Thumbnai ls of ea ch stor y (excep t for [U nsorte d] and [V ideo Snap shot]) will appear . 5 T ouch the thumbnail of the story where you want to mo ve or copy the scenes. If you ar e movi ng or co pying s cenes to an empty story , sk ip to step 7.
94 Video 4 Move the scenes . • The s cenes ar e move d and the ga llery screen o f the source st ory appea rs. IMPORT AN T • Y ou cannot move or copy scenes to [Unsorted] or [Video Snapshot]. Capturing Video Snapshot Scen es and Photos from a Movie Y ou can c apture video snapshot scenes or photos fro m a pr eviously rec ord ed scene.
