Preparations 23 Preparations This chapter describes basic operations, such as using the touch panel, navigating the menus, and first time settings to help you learn more about your camcorder . Getting Started Charging the Battery Pack The camcorder can be power ed with a battery pack or directly using the compact power adapter .
24 Preparations 5 Charging will start when the camcorder is turned off. • If the camcorder was on, the gr een ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will go out when you turn off the camcorder . After a moment, the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator will start flashing in red (battery pack charging).
Preparations 25 • T o prevent equipment breakdowns and excessive heating, do not con- nect the supplied compact power adapter to voltage converters for overseas travels or special power sour ces such as those on air craft and ships, DC-AC inverters, etc.
26 Preparations Preparing the Accessories Wireless Controller First, insert the supplied CR2025 lithium button battery into the wire- less controller . 1 Press the tab in the direction of the arrow and pull out the battery holder . 2 Place the lithium button battery with the + side facing up.
Preparations 27 Grip Belt and Straps Fasten the grip belt. Adjust the grip belt so that you can reach the zoom lever with your index finger , and the g button with your thumb. To remove the grip belt 1 Lift the padded handgrip's flap and detach the strap from the V elcro pad.
28 Preparations To attach an optional wrist strap Pass the attaching end of the wrist strap through the r ear bracket on the camcorder , thread the wrist strap through the loop and fasten. Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience and protection.
Preparations 29 NOTES • About the LCD screen: The screen is pr oduced using extremely high-pre- cision manufacturing techniques, with more than 99.99% of the pixels operating to specification. Less th an 0.01% of the pixels may occasion- ally misfire or appear as black, r e d, blue or green dots.
30 Preparations Basic Operation of the Camcorder Using the T ouch Screen The control buttons and menu items that appear on the touch scr een change dynamically depending on the operating mode and the task you are performing. With the intuitive touch scr een interface you have all the controls at your fingertips.
Preparations 31 Operating Modes Recording When recor ding video or photos, the camcorder’ s operating mode is determined by the position of the mode switch and the onscreen con- trol buttons. * The mode icon displayed will change accordi ng to the optimal mode selected by the Smart AUTO function ( 0 43).
32 Preparations NOTES • When switching to a playback mode, the memory selected for playback will be the same currently used for r ecording. • Y ou can also press and hold B on the wireless contr oller for more than 2 seconds to switch betwee n recor ding and playback mode.

34 Preparations First Time Settings Setting the Date and Time Y ou will need to set the date and time of the camcorder befor e you can start using it. The [Date/Time] screen will appear automatically when the cam- corder’ s clock is not set. When the [Date/Time] screen appears, the year will be selected.
Preparations 35 Changing the Language The default language of the camcorder is English. Y ou can set it to one of 22 other languages. * Only when performing the procedure in a recor ding mode. NOTES • Some control buttons, such as [ZOOM], [FUNC.
36 Preparations Using a Memory Card Memory Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use commerc ially available Secur e Digital (SD) car ds with this camcor der . However , depending on the memory car d, you may not be able to recor d movies.
Preparations 37 SDXC Memory Cards As of May 2010, SDXC memory cards have been tested to work under Windows 7. For details on whether your computer's operating system is SDXC-com patible, check with your computer's manufa cturer .
38 Preparations Inserting and Removing a Memory Card Make sure to initialize ( 0 40) all memory car ds before using them with this camcorder . 1 T urn off the camcorder . Make sure the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is off. 2 Open the memory card slot cover .
Preparations 39 POINTS T O CHECK • Be sure you understand the information pr ovided in Eye-Fi Cards ( 0 37) before using an Eye-Fi car d. * When selecting the memory , you can check the approximate available r ecording time/number of photos, based on currently used settings.
40 Preparations NOTES • Any of the following actions will deactivate the relay r ecording function: - T urning off the camcorder . - Opening the memory card slot cover . - Changing the position of the mode switch. - Changing the camcorder's operating mode.
Preparations 41 * T ouch this option if you want to physically erase all the data ra ther than just clear the file allocation table of the memory . ** If you selected the [Complete Initializati on] option, you can touch [Cancel] to cancel the initialization while it is in progr ess.
42 Dual Shot Mode Dual Shot Mode This chapter covers how to easily recor d video and photos in the all-automatic Dual Shot mode, and how to use basic shoot- ing functions like zoom and Quick Start. T o enjoy full access to menus and more advanced functions, r efer to the relevant chapters for video ( 0 58) and photos ( 0 104).

44 Dual Shot Mode IMPORT ANT • Observe the following precautions while the ACCESS indicator is on or flashing. Failing to do so may result in permanent data loss or damage to the memory . - Do not open the memory card slot cover . - Do not disconnect the power source or turn off the camcor der .
Dual Shot Mode 45 • Be sure to save your r ecordings regularly ( 0 126), especially after making important recor din gs. Canon shall not be liable for any loss or corruption of data. • When recor ding photos on an Eye-Fi card, photos will be uploaded automatically if you are within the ra nge of a configur ed network.
46 Dual Shot Mode Zooming There ar e three ways you can zoom in and out: using the zoom lever on the camcorder , using the zoom buttons on the wireless controller or using the zoom controls on the touch scr een. In addition to the 15x optical zoom*, in mode, you can tur n on the 300x digital zoom with the 7 8 [Digital Zoom] setting.
Dual Shot Mode 47 2 T ouch the zoom controls to operate the zoom. T ouch anywhere within the Q area to zoom out or anywhere within the P ar ea to zoom in. T ouch closer to the center for a slow zoom; touch closer to the e / d icons for faster zooms.
48 Dual Shot Mode 2 When you wish to resume r ecording, open the LCD panel. The ON/OFF (CHG) indicator turns back green and the camcorder is ready to r ecord. IMPORT ANT • Do not disconnect the power source during standby mode (while the ON/OFF (CHG) indicator is lit in orange).
Video 49 Video This chapter covers functions related to movies, including play- back, advanced shooting, advanced functions and playlist and scene operations. For details about basic video shooting, refer to Dual Shot Mode ( 0 42). Basic Playback Playing Back the Video 1P r e s s S .
50 Video 4 T ouch the desired scene to play it back. • Playback will start from the scene selected and continue until the end of the last scene in the index screen.
Video 51 During playback pause: A Stop the playback. B Jump to the beginning of the scene. Double-tap to jump to the previous scene. C Pause the playback. D Drag your finger left and right along the volume bar to adjust the volume. E T ouch anywhere else to hide the playback controls.

Video 53 Options NOTES • Fast/slow playback modes are not available for scenes converted to standard definition. Scenes in the [SD Scenes] index scr eens can only be played back at normal speed.
54 Video 3D Flip View 3D Flip View is a fun way to display your video r ecordings (original scenes) in a 3D layout, organized by r ecording date. In any index screen, touch [ b ] 8 [3D Flip View]. During single photo view , touch the screen once to display the contr ols then touch [ Q ] to open the [Photos] index screen.
Video 55 Narrowing Down the Scenes Shown in the Index Scr een From the [Original] index scr een, you can narrow down the scenes shown, leaving only scenes that were r ecorded on a specific date or only those scenes in which people's faces were detected.
56 Video 2 Open the calendar screen. • Dates that contain scenes (that i s, movies were r ecorded on that date) appear in black against a silver background. Dates without recor dings appear grayed out. •T o u c h [ y ] or [ A ] to jump to the previous/next calendar month that contains recor dings.
Video 57 3 T ouch on the individual scenes you want to delete. • A checkmark O will appear on scenes selected. T ouch a selected scene again to remove the checkmark. • T o select all the scenes at on ce: T ouch [Select All] instead of touching individual scenes.
58 Video Advanced Functions Shooting Video in y Manual Mode When the mode switch is set to y (Manual mode), you can enjoy full access to the menus and manually ad just the exposure, focus, white balance and many more of the camcor der's settings to your prefer- ence.
Video 59 NOTES • The zoom, Quick Start function, power saving modes, etc. operate the same way in mode as in mode. For details, refer to Dual Shot Mode ( 0 42). Selecting the Video Quality (Recording Mode) The camcorder of fers 5 recording modes.
60 Video Special Scene Recording Programs Recording in a very bright ski r esort or capturing the full colors of a sunset or a fireworks display becomes as easy as selecting a Special Scene recor ding program. Approximate r ecording times Default value 1 Recorded in 1,920 x 1,080 r esolution.
Video 61 Options ( Default value) [ F Port rait] The camcorder uses a large aper- ture, to achieve a sharp focus on the subject while blurring the background. [ G Sports] T o record sports scenes such as tennis or golf. [ q Night Scene] T o record nightscapes with lower noise.
62 Video NOTES •[ F Portrait]/[ G Sports]/[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The picture may not appear smooth during playback. •[ F Portrait]: The blur effect of the backgr ound increases the more you zoom in ( P ). •[ I Snow]/[ J Beach]: The subject may become overexposed on cloudy days or in shaded places.
Video 63 recordings while on land, we r ecommend using the [ s Surface] recording pr ogram. - T o switch the recording pr ogram between [ r Underwater] and [ s Surface] while the camcorder is in the waterpr oof case, tur n on the camcorder while holding j pr essed down.
64 Video To change the frame rate Advanced Image Stabilization The image stabilizer reduces camcor der blur (blur due to the cam- corder moving) so you can get nice, stable shots. Select the image sta- bilization mode according to the shooting conditions.
Video 65 NOTES • If the degree of camcor der shake is too high, the image stabilizer may not be able to fully compensate. • Powered IS is not available in mode. • For surveying and following shots, when you pan the camcorder from side to side or tilt it up and down, we recommend setting the IS mode to [ P Dynamic] or [ Q Standard].
66 Video 1 Activate the pre-r ecording function. • d appears. • Repeat, selecting [ B Off], to turn off pr e-recording. 2P r e s s g . The scene recor ded in the memory will start 3 seconds before g was pressed. NOTES • While pre-recor ding is activated, th e camcorder will not emit any notifi- cation sounds.
Video 67 POINTS T O CHECK • Select a recor ding program other than [ q Night Scene], [ p Low Light], [ M Fireworks] or [ r Underwater]. By default, face detection is activated. If the function was turned off, per- form the following procedur e to tur n it on.
68 Video T ouch & T rack When recor ding people, face detection will track the main subject and keep it always in focus. But also when recor ding other moving subjects such as your pet, a moving vehicle or people not facing the camera directly , you can use T ouch & T rack to keep your subject in focus at all times.
Video 69 1P r e s s z . • A blue border appears on the screen. • Press z again to r etur n to normal video recor ding mode. 2P r e s s g . • By default, the camcorder records for about 4 seconds (the blue frame serves as a visual progr ess bar) and then automatically returns to recor d pause mode.
70 Video To fade in/out Press g in r ecord pause mode ( M ) to start recor ding with a fade in. Press g while r ecording ( N ) to fade out and pause the recor ding. Options ( Default value) NOTES • When you apply a fader , not only the picture but also the sound will fade in or out.
Video 71 Options ( Default value) NOTES •[ B Shutter -Pri. AE]: - On screen only the deno minator is displayed – [ B 250] indicates a shutter speed of 1/250 second, etc.
72 Video Shutter Speed and Aperture V alue Guidelines X With slower shutter speed you can add a nice motion blur and sense of movement. With faster shutter speeds you can “freeze the action” for powerful im ages of moving subjects. W X With small aperture values only the subject is in focus and the background is softly blurred.
Video 73 Manual Exposure Adjustment At times, backlit subjects may appear too dark (underexposed) or sub- jects under very strong lights may appear too bright or glaring (over ex- posed). T o correct this, you can adjust the exposure manually or use the T ouch AE function to automatically set the optimal exposure for the subject you select.
74 Video NOTES • If the recor ding program is change d during exposure lock, the cam- corder will r eturn to automatic exposure. • When shooting subjects with a stro ng light sour ce behind them, the camcorder automatically corr ects for the backlight.
Video 75 POINTS T O CHECK • Adjust the zoom before you start the pr ocedure. 1 Open the manual focus screen. 2 T ouch a subject that appears inside the X frame. • The T ouch AF mark ( P ) will flash and the focusing distance will be adjusted automatically .
76 Video White Balance The white balance function helps you to accurately repr oduce colors under differ ent lighting conditions so that white objects will always look truly white in your recor dings. POINTS T O CHECK • Select a recor ding program other than the Special Scene recor ding pro- grams.
Video 77 NOTES • When you select the custom white balance: -S e t 7 8 [Digital Zoom] to [ B Off]. - Reset the white balance when you ch ange locations or the lighting or other conditions change. - Depending on the light source, g may keep flashing.
78 Video Options ( Default value) Mini Video Light Y ou can tur n on the mini video light to shoot video or take photos in dark places. POINTS T O CHECK • Select a recor ding program other than [ r Underwater] or [ s Surface]. • Y appears on the screen.
Video 79 NOTES • We r ecommend not using the mini video light while the optional W ide- converter or T ele-converter is att ached; its shadow can appear on the screen.
80 Video mode: Press j , first halfway to activate the autofocus and then fully . The camcorder will r ecord the phot o after a 10-second countdown*. The countdown appears on the screen. * 2 seconds when using the wireless controller . NOTES • Once the countdown has begun, any of the following actions will cancel the self timer .
Video 81 2T o u c h a n d h o l d [ y ] or [ A ] to adjust the audio recording level as necessary . As a guideline, adjust the audio recor ding level so that the audio level meter will go to the right of the -12 dB mark (yellow area) only occasionally .
82 Video Using Headphones Use headphones for playback or to check the audio level while recor d- ing. The headphones are connected to the A V OUT/ X terminal, which is used for both the headphones and the audio/video output.
Video 83 IMPORT ANT • When using headphones, make sure to lower the volume to an appr o- priate level. • Do not connect the headphones to the A V OUT/ X terminal if the J icon does not appear on the screen. The noise output in such case may be harmful to your hearing.
84 Video NOTES • Accessories designed for the Advanced Accessory Shoe cannot be used with this camcorder . Look for video accessories bearing this logo to ensure compatibility with the mini advanced shoe .
Video 85 Using other microphones Y ou can also use commercially avail- able microphones. Connect the exter- nal microphone to the MIC terminal. Use commercially available condenser microphones with their own power supply. Y ou can connect almost any stereo micr ophone with a ∅ 3.
86 Video Attach the optional RA- V1 Remote Control Adapter to the mini advanced shoe. Refer to Using the Mini Advanced Shoe ( 0 83). appears. For details about using the adapter , refer to the instruction manual of the RA- V1. For details about using the zoom remote contr oller , refer to the instruction manual of the ZR-2000 or ZR-1000.
Video 87 Selecting the Playback Starting Point If you have a very long scene, you may want to start playing back the scene from a certain point. Y ou can use the movie timeline to break the scene to segments at fixed time intervals ranging from 6 seconds to 6 minutes.
88 Video To change the interval between frames T o display changes in the scene’ s main subject • The timeline ruler will show fram es taken from the scene every time the main subject detected by the camcorder changed.
Video 89 Playing Back Scenes Set to Background Music Y ou can play back video snapshot scenes, scenes in the playlist and photo slideshows set to background music (instead of the original sound). Y ou can use one of the supplied music tracks or connect an external audio player to use your favorite songs as background music.
90 Video 3 Back in the index screen, touch a scene to start the playback set to the selected music track. In mode, touch a photo to go to single photo view and continue with the slideshow procedur e ( 0 113). To delete a music track In the music track selection screen, touch [ Z ] or [ O ] to select the track you want to delete.
Video 91 2 Activate the external audio input. 3 Connect the external player to the camcorder's MIC terminal. 4 Adjust the audio input as necessary . • Start the music playback on the exte rnal player and adjust its volume according to the onscr een indication s.
92 Video NOTES • Y ou can also add to the playlist just the video snapshot scenes you want to watch and arrange their playback order . • Initializing a memory card will permanently erase any music files you may have transferred to the car d.

94 Video Playlist and Scene Operations Editing the Playlist: Adding, Deleting , Moving and Playing Back Create a playlist to play back only the scenes you pr efer and in the order of your choice. Y ou can play ba ck the scenes in the playlist using your favorite song as background music ( 0 89).
Video 95 • Y ou can copy scenes from the built-in memory to the memory card ( 0 126) to include in the memory car d’ s playlist also scenes that were originally r ecorded in the built-in memory . Deleting Scenes from the Playlist Deleting scenes from the playlist will not af fect your original recordings.
96 Video Capturing Photos and Video Snapshot Scenes from a Movie Y ou can capture video snapshot scenes, single photos or a series of continuous photos from a pr eviously recorded scene.
Video 97 NOTES • A video snapshot scene can be captured only during playback; it can- not be captured during playback pause mode. • The captur ed video snapshot scene is saved to the same memory that contains the source scene. • Video snapshot scenes cannot be captured from any of the following types of scenes.
98 Video To capture the photos 1 Play back the scene from which you want to captur e the photo. 2 Pause the playback at the point you want to capture. 3 Press j fully . T o capture a photo sequence, hold j pressed down. The scene will be played back by frames and each frame captured as a separate photo.
Video 99 2 Select the scene you want to divide and touch it to start playing it back. 3 Pause the playback at the point where you want to divide the scene. 4 Open the scene division screen. 5 Bring the scene to a precise point, if necessary . • During playback pause: T ouch [ A ] to play back the scene.
