16 Preparations This chapter descr ibes basic operat ions, such as naviga ting the menus, and first time settings to help you lear n more about your camcord er . Ch argin g the B atte ry P ack The camc order can be p owere d with a battery pack or direct ly usin g the compact power ad apter .
17 7 Charging will start whe n the camcor der i s turned of f. • The ON/OFF(CHG) indicator starts flashing in r ed. The indi cator will go out when the char ging is complete d. • If the indicator flashes quickly , ref er t o T roubleshooting ( 85).
Preparations 18 supplied compact power adapter to volt age conver ters for ov erseas travels or sp ecial powe r sources such as those on airc raft and ships, DC-AC i nverters, etc. NOTES • T ur n off the camcord er bef ore charging the battery pack.
19 Y ou can also attach the wrist strap to the strap mount on the grip belt to use both for extra convenience and pro tection. Pass the ends of the should er strap thr ough the strap m ount o n the grip belt and adjust the length of the stra p.
Preparations 20 no effect on the reco rded image an d does not co nstitute a mal function. LCD Backligh t Y ou can set the brightness of the scre en to dim, normal or bright. T o set the screen to dim, turn on [LCD DIMMER] ( s 81). T o toggle be tween normal and bright or to turn off [LCD DIMMER], perform the following pr ocedure.
21 Opera ting Mo des The camc order ’ s operating mode is determined by the button and the po sition of the camera mode dial. In this manual, indicate s that a function is available in the operating mode shown and indicates that the function is not a vailable.
Preparations 22 settings t o your pr eference. Even in flex ible re cording mo de, the camcor der can help you with the settings. For example, you can use th e Special Scene r ecor ding programs ( 40) to set at once all the optimal settings to matc h spec ial recordi ng con dition s.
23 During pla yback mode, select ( ) a “row” of functions and press to operate the function in t he middle or push the joyst ick ( ) to operate the function on the left or right side of the row , respectiv ely . In eith er mode, if you wait a few seconds, the joystick guide will minimize again but the sel ected function can s till be operated.

When the [DA TE/TIME] s creen ap pears, the year will be displaye d in orange and indi cated wit h up/d own arr ows.

27 Memory Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use commer cially available SDHC (SD hig h capacity) memory cards an d SD m emory ca rds wit h this camc order to recor d movies and photos. However , depending on the memo ry card, y ou may not be able to record m ovies on it .

Additional In formation 86 After using the camcorder for a long time, i t becomes hot. - The camcorder may become hot after using it continuously for long periods of time; this is not a malfunction. If it becomes hot very quickly or it becomes too ho t to touch, it may indicate a problem with the camcorder .
87 Deleting scenes takes longer than usual. - When the memory contains a large number of scenes, so me operations may take longer than usua l. Save your recordings ( 71) and initialize the memory ( 28). Cannot erase a photo - The photo is protected. Remove the protection ( 61).
Additional In formation 88 The ON/OFF(CHG) (power/charge) indicator flashes very slowly while the camcorder is charging. - (one flash at 2-second intervals) The battery pack’ s temperat ure ha s either fallen below 0 °C or risen above 40 °C. If the battery pack is too cold, warm it up.
89 Connections with Exter nal Devices Video noise appears on the TV screen. - When using the camcorder in a room wher e a TV is located, keep a distance be tween the compact power adapter and the power or antenna cabl es of the TV . Playback looks fine on the camcorder but there is no i mage on the TV screen.
