6 An Intr oduction to D VDs DVD discs are available in va rious types and two sizes ( 12 cm and 8 cm discs). This camcorder uses the following types of comme rcially available 8 cm mini DVD d iscs: DVD-R (one disc supplied with the camcorder), DVD-R DL * or DVD-RW discs.
7 7 DVD-R • Available disc specifica tions: VIDEO mode only . • Reu sa b i li t y: Disc can be used only once. Recordings cannot be edited or deleted. • Finalization: Once fin alized, add itional reco rdings can not be made. • Compatibility: A finalized DVD -R can be played back on most DVD device s.

Recording Basic Functions E 31 When using a tripod : Do not leave the viewfinder exposed to direct sunlight a s it may melt (due to concentrat ion of the light by the lens). Do not use tripods with fastening scre ws longer than 5.5 mm (0.2 inch). Doing so may damage the camcorder .

Editing the Scenes Editing Fu nctions E 63 Editing Fu nctions Editing t he Scenes Creating a Playlist Create a playlist to easily edit your movies. Include in your playlist only the scenes you prefer or change the order in which they will be played back, without affecting your original recordings.
Editing the Scenes 64 IMPORT ANT Be careful when deleting original recordings. Once deleted, an original scene cann ot be recovered. Do not change the position of the power switch or the / switch while the scene is being deleted. NOTES Scenes cannot be deleted when the disc is protected ( 65).
Disc Option s Editing Fu nctions E 65 Dividing a Scene Y ou can divide your recordings in order to leave only the best parts and later cut out the rest.
Disc Options 66 IMPORT ANT Initializing the disc will permanently erase all recordings, even if the disc is protected. The lost original re cordings cannot be recovered. Initialize all DVD-RW discs before using them with this camcorder . POINTS TO CHECK Disc type: DVD-RW discs (VIDEO or VR mode).
Still Image Options Editing Fu nctions E 67 Stil l Image Options Erasing Still Ima ges Y ou can erase still images recorded on the memory card or on the disc (DVD-RW only). IMPORT ANT Be careful when erasin g images. Erased images cannot be recovered.
Still Image Options 68 Copying Still Images Y ou can copy still images recorded on the memory card to the disc (for example, to add them to a Photomovie scene ( 68)), or from the disc to the memory card (for example, to set print or ders for a DPOF compatible printer ( 88)).
Still Image Options Editing Fu nctions E 69 Conv er ting Al l Images POINTS TO CHECK If you want to include in your Photomovie scene still images recorded on the memory card, copy them to the disc in advance ( 68). NOTES If the disc becomes full while creating a Photomovie scene, the operation will be canceled .

Playing Back the Disc on an External Device E 71 Playing Back the Disc on an External Device T o play the disc you recorded on a D VD player , a computer’s DVD drive or other digital device, you need to finalize it first. Y ou do not need to finalize the disc to play back your recordings with the camcorder connected to the TV .
72 Playing Back y our Disc on a D VD Player or a Computer’s D VD Drive After finalizing the disc you can play it on DVD players compatible with the type of disc you used (DVD-R, DVD-R DL or DVD-RW). For details about disc compatibility refer to the ins truction manual of the DVD player or DVD drive.

Connecting to a Computer 82 When you are using a DVD-RW disc as the source disc, if the tray of a DVD drive other than that selected in step 5 opens when you need to insert the target disc, some recordi ngs on the source disc may be lost. Click on “Cancel” and restart the co mputer .

92 Trouble? Playback/E diting The recording suddenly stops shortly after starting recording. The disc is dirty . Clean the disc with a soft lens-cleaning cloth. If the problem persists replace the disc. 100 The camcorder has exceeded its operational temperature.
Trouble? 93 Additional Infor mation E Playing Back the Disc in an Exter nal D VD Device External DVD device refers to DVD players, DVD recorders, computer ’s DVD drives and other digital devices. Cannot create a Photomovie scene. There are no still images recorded on the disc.
94 Trouble? Memor y Car d Oper ation Printing List of Messages Problem Solution Memory card cannot be inserted. Memory card was not facing the correct direction. Turn the memory card over and reinsert it. 24 Memory card cannot be recorded. Memory card is full.
Trouble? 95 Additional Infor mation E REACHED THE MAXIMUM NUMBER OF SCENES The maximum number of scenes has been reached. Delete some recordings (DVD-RW in VR mode) to free some space or replace the disc. 25 63 CANNOT PLA Y DISC The disc is dirty or you attempted to p lay back a disc type not supported (not DVD-R/RW).
96 Trouble? NO DISC No disc is loaded. Insert a disc. 25 This message can also appear if condensation has formed. Wait until the camcorder dries completely before resuming use. 102 Y ou inserted a disc recorded in a different T elevision System (P AL or SECAM).

98 Trouble? INCOMP A TIBLE P APER SIZE The paper settings of the camcorder conflict with the printer ’s settings. PRINTER IN USE The printer is in use. Check the printer status. P A PER LEVER ERROR Paper lever error occurred. Adjus t the paper selection lever to the proper position.
