5 Introduction Ho w to select a D VD disc There are many types of DVD discs but this ca mcorder uses only the following three types of 8 cm mini DVD discs: DVD-R, DVD-R DL and D VD-RW . Note that what you can do with a disc depends on the type of DVD used so select the disc that best fits your purpose.
6 No need to worry about recordin g over a tape. When you use a DVD, the camcorder will autom atically record on the e mpty space of the disc. So you don't have to worry about mistakenly recordi ng over a precious memory . Just select a scene from the in dex screen.

Retract the grip belt under the camcorder so it will not get in the way of the disc cover .

Recording Basic Functions 29 When using a tripod : Do not leave the viewfinder exposed to direct sunlight a s it may melt (due to concentrat ion of the light by the lens). Do not use tripods with fastening scre ws longer than 5.5 mm (0.2 inch). Doing so may damage the camcorder .

Menu Options Lists Advanced Functi ons 39 The wind screen cannot be turned off when the mode switch is set to AUTO . Some low-frequency sounds will be suppressed along with the sound of wind. When recording in surroundings unaffected by wind or if you want to record low-frequency sounds, we recommend setting the wind screen to [ O F F ] .

When the adjustment is complete d, stops flashing and stays on. The camcorder retains the custom setting even if you turn off the camcorder .
Still Image Recor ding Options Advanced Functi ons 49 Stil l Image Recording Op tions Selecting the Size and Quality of Still Imag es S till images are recorded on the disc using the JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) compression. As a general rule select a larger image size for higher quality .
Still Image Recording Opt ions 50 Automatic F ocus Priority When the focus priority is activated, the camcorder records a still image only after the focus has been adjusted automatically . POINTS TO CHECK Mode switch at AUTO : The focus priority cannot be turned off.
Other Functions Advanced Functi ons 51 Other Func tions On-Screen Displays The camcorder keeps a data code containing the date and time and other camera data (shutter speed, exposure, etc.) registered at the time of recording. Y ou can select the data to be displayed.
Other Functions 52 histogram skews to the right is relatively bright; while one whose histogram peaks to the left, is relatively dark. NOTES The histogram will appear also while reviewing a still image immediately after recording it. Self Timer POINTS TO CHECK : Set the camcorder in record pause mode.
Other Functions Advanced Functi ons 53 NOTES When you apply a fader , not only the picture but also the sound will fade in or out . When you apply an effect , the sound will be recorded normally . The camcorder retains the setting last used even if you turn off the digital effect s or change the recording program.
Managing Scenes 54 Editing F unctions Managing Scenes Creating a Playlist Create a playlist to easily edit your movies. Include in your playlist only the scenes you prefer or change the order in which they will be played back, without affecting your original recordings.

Managing the Disc Editing Fu nctions 57 Managing th e Disc Protecting the Disc Y ou can protect the whole disc to prevent the accidental erasure of important recordings. Follow the same procedure to remove the protection of a protected disc. IMPORT ANT Initializing the disc ( 57) will permanently erase all recordings, even if the disc is protected.
Managing the Disc 58 * Close the menu only af ter the screen display returns to th e [DISC OPERA TIONS] menu. Changing the Disc Title Before you finalize yo ur disc*, you can give it a title. The disc title will be displayed on the index screen when playing the finalized disc in most DVD players.
Managing Photos Editing Fu nctions 59 Managing P hotos Erasing Photos Y ou can e rase still images recorded on the disc (DVD-RW only). IMPORT ANT Be careful when erasing images. Erased images cannot be recovered. NOTES Images on a protected disc cannot be erased.
Managing Photos 60 Conv er ting Photos into Photomo vie Scenes S till images are recorded using JPEG compression, but a DVD player only recognizes the MPEG standard.
Playing Back the Disc on an External Device 61 Playing Back the Disc on an Extern al Device T o play the disc you recorded on a DVD player , a compute r ’s DVD drive or other digital device, you need to finalize it first. Y ou do not need to finalize the disc to play back your recordings with the camcorder connected to the TV .
62 Finalizing the Disc The length of the finalization process depends on the scenes recorded and the remaining free space on the disc. POINTS TO CHECK Power the camcorder using the compact power adapter . * Only when using a DVD-RW recorded in VR mode.
Playing Back the Disc on an External Device 63 Unfinalize a disc to allow recording additional movies on the disc even af ter it was finalized. IMPORT ANT Be sure to unfinaliz e the disc in normal room temperatures. If the procedure w as not completed correctl y due to high tempe r ature, le t the camcorder cool off before resuming opera tion.

Trouble? 69 Additional Infor mation Playing Back the Disc in an Exter nal D VD Device External DVD device refers to DVD players, DVD recorders, computer ’ s DVD drives and other digital devices. Cannot edit the disc title. Y ou cannot add a title to a DVD-R/DVD-R DL disc after it was finalized.

Trouble? 71 Additional Infor mation CANNOT READ THE DISC CHECK THE DISC Disc could not be read. Try cleaning it or replace the disc. 73 This message can also appear if the camcorder has exceeded its operational temperature. Turn off the camcorder and let it cool down before resuming use.
72 Do’s and Don’ts Do’s and Don ’ts Camcorder Do not subject the camcorder to vibrations or strong impacts while the DISC access indicator is on or flashing. The data may not be correctly recorded on the disc, and the recording may be permanently lost.
