About this Manual 12 Setting the Time Code The camcorder g enerates a times code signal and embeds it in your recordings. Y ou can output the time code along with video output from the HDMI OUT terminal ( A 134). For 59.94 Hz recor dings, you can also select between a drop frame and non-dr op frame time code.

2 21 Preparations Pr eparing the Power Supply Y ou can power the camcor der using a battery pack or dir ectly using the compact power adapter . If you connect the compact power adapter to the camcor der while a battery pack is attached, the c amcorder will dr aw power fro m the power outlet.
Preparing the Power Supply 22 • Charged battery packs continue to di scharge naturally . Therefor e, charge the m on the day of use, or the da y before, to ensur e a full charge. • We reco mmend that you prepar e battery packs to last 2 to 3 times longer than you think you m ight need.
23 Preparing the Power Supply Checking the Remaining Battery Charge When the camcor der is turn ed on, you can check the rema ining battery charge by l ookin g at any recor ding/ playback scr een or the [Battery/Hour M eter] status screen ( A 144 ).

25 Date, Time and Language Settings Date, Time and Language Settings Setti ng the Dat e and Time Y ou will need to set the date and t ime of the camcorder be fore you can start using it.

27 Using the Menus Using the Menus In mode, many of the camcor der’ s functions can be adjusted fr om the menu for general settings, which opens after pr essing the MENU button. Y ou can also re gister frequently used menu settings in a customized submenu (My Menu) for easy acce ss.
Using the Menus 28 • When an optional RC-V100 Remote Cont roller is co nnected to the camcor der , you can use the remote controller's Up/Down/Left/Right/SE T buttons in the same way as the camcorder' s joystick. Pr essing the SET button is equivalent to pre ssing the joystick on the cam corder .

Preparing the Camcorde r 30 Attaching an EF Lens 1S e t t h e Q switch to OFF . 2 Remove the body cap from the camcor der and any dust caps from the lens. 3 Attach the lens to the camcor d er and turn the lens in the direction of the arrow until it c licks in place.
31 Preparing the Camcorde r 3 Select [On] and then pr ess the joystick. •A s l o n g a s [ ~ Camera Setup] > [Periph. Illum. Corr .] is set t o [On] , the camcorder w ill automatically apply the appro priate correctio n data.

Preparing the Camcorde r 34 Setting the Screen to Blac k & White The viewfinder and LCD screen display in c olor by d efau l t but you can set them to black & white. Even when the scr een is black & white, onscr een text and icons will still be displayed in color .
35 Preparing the Camcorde r Removing the Grip Unit 1 Set the Q switch to OFF . 2 Unscrew the g rip unit’ s lock scr ew and gently detach the grip unit. • The grip unit contains an internal connection cable so be sure n ot to pull it too for cefully .

37 Preparing the Camcorde r The Camcorder’ s Co oling System The camcor der’ s internal temperature is controll ed using a cooling fan that will turn on when ever the camcor der itself is turned on. However , you c an turn off the coo ling fan temporarily if necessary .
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 38 Usi ng an SD C ar d SD Cards Compatible for Use with the Camcorder Y ou can use the following types of commer cially availabl e Secure Digital (SD) car ds with this camcor der . The camcorder is equipped with two SD car d slots.
39 Using an SD Card Inserting and Removing an SD Car d Y ou can insert an SD card into SD car d slot A or slot B. If you have two SD cards, yo u can use both slots. 1 T ur n off the c amcorder . 2 Lift t he LCD panel upw ar ds and open t he SD ca rd compar tment cove r .
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 40 NOTES • T o remove the SD car d: Push the SD car d once t o r elease it. When th e SD card springs out, pull it all the way out. • If yo u se t th e [ w Other Functions] > [Media Access LED] fu nction to [Off], the access indicators will no t illuminate.
41 Using an SD Card Switching Between the SD Car d Slots The camcor der features two SD card slots, SD car d slot A and SD car d slot B. If both slots co ntain an SD card, y ou can switch between them as necessary . Press the SLOT SELECT button. • The access indicator of the selected SD card slot will ill uminate in gr een.
Usi ng a n SD Ca rd 42 Checking t he Remaining Recording T ime on the S D Card When the camcorder is in mode, the display on th e u pper left of the scr een in dicates which SD car d slot is in use and the available r ecord ing time (in minutes*) that remains on each SD card.
43 Adjusting the Black Balance Adjusting the Black Balance Y ou can have the camcorder adjust the black balanc e automatically when ambient temperature changes considerably or if there i s a noticeable change in a true bla ck video signal. 1 O pen the [AB B] screen.

3 45 Recording Recor ding Video This section explains the r ecording basic s. Bef or e you begi n re cording, make a test r ecording f irst to check if the camcor der operates corr ectly . Record for approximately 1 5 minutes at the default bit rate, 24 Mbps (LPCM) ( A 51).

47 Recording V ideo Locking the Co ntrols in Recording Mode Once in mode, y ou can set the Q switch to C (key lock) to lock all the physical controls (bu ttons and swi tches) on the camcor der , save for the ST ART/ST OP button*. This is useful in pr eventing settings from being changed due to inadvertently pressing one of the buttons.

49 Recording V ideo Canon Log Gamma and CINEMA Preset Y ou can easily set the camcor der to use a number o f preset pictur e- related settings especially designed with pr ofessional cinematogr aphy and motion picture pro duction in mind.
Recordin g Video 50 Checking Clips Recorded with Canon Log Gamma (View Assistance) When Canon Log gamma is u sed, the image displayed on the screen will a ppear darker than usual. Y ou can use the view assistance function to display an image that appr oximates the one that would be obtained using a normal gamma setting.
51 Video Confi guration: System Freque ncy, Bit Rate and Frame Rate Video Configuration: System Frequency , Bit Rate and Frame Rate Before y ou recor d, select the bit rate and fram e rate th at best match your cr eative needs. The options av ailable will depend on the system frequ ency selected: 59.

53 Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Changing Main Camera Functions with the Joystick Y ou can adjust three main camera fu nctions –shutter sp eed, white balance and ISO sp eed/gain– using only the joystick. This section will explai n the b asic operation for changing a value.
Shutter Sp eed 54 Shutter Speed Set the shutter speed based on the reco rding conditions . For example, you may want to set slower shutter speeds in darker envir onments. The cam corder offers the following 5 modes. [Speed]: Allows you to set t he shutter speed (in fractions of a seco nd).
55 Shutter Speed Chan ging th e Shutte r Mod e 1 Open the shutter [Mode] submenu. [ ~ Cam era Se tup] > [Shutter] > [Mode] 2 Select the des ire d mode and th en pr ess th e joyst ick. • If you selected [Speed] (the default value), y ou can continue the proc edure to select the incr ement scale to use when adj usting the shutter speed.
Shutter Sp eed 56 NOTES • Closing down the aperture when r ecording under br ight conditions may cause the pictur e to appear soft or out of focus. T o avoid the loss of sharpn ess due to diffraction, use a faster shutter speed, a denser ND filter ( A 59) or open up the aper ture.
57 ISO Speed/ Gain ISO S peed/Gai n Depending on the shooting conditions you may want to adjust the brightness of the image. Y o u can do so by changing the ISO speed or gain value to adjust the sensitiv ity of the sensor .
ISO Spee d/Ga in 58 Adjus ting the ISO/Ga in V alue 1 Press the ISO/GAIN button. • The current ISO/gain valu e will be highligh ted in orange . 2 Push the joystick up/down to select the de sired ISO speed o r gain value an d then p ress the j oystick.
59 ND Filter ND Filter Using the ND f ilters allows you keep the apertur e within an appropriate range when r ecor ding in bright su rroundin gs*. * Closin g down the a pertur e wh en r ecor ding un der brig ht con dition s may ca use th e pictu r e t o appear soft or out of focus.
Adjusting the Aperture 60 Adjusting the Aper ture Y ou can affect the brightness of your recor dings or ch ange the depth of field by adjusting the apertu re. For example, use a small apertur e value fo r a shallow depth of f ield that isolates the subject in focus and nicely blurs the backgro und.
61 Adjusting the Aperture NOTES • When using an EF l ens with no lens contacts, such as a Canon Cinema lens, you cannot adj ust the aperture using the camcorde r . Adjust the aper ture using the lens. • Y ou can use the [ w Oth er Functions] > [Custom Fun ction] > [Grip Ctrl Dial Dir .
Adjusting the Aperture 62 Light Me tering Mod e Select the light metering mode to match the recor ding co nditions. Usin g the appro priat e setting will ensur e that the camcorder obtains the most suitable exposu re level whe n automatic aperture is used.
63 White Balance White Balance The camcor der uses an electr onic white balance pr ocess to calibrate the pi cture and ensur e accurate colors under dif feren t lighting condition s.
White Balance 64 Prese t White Balance Settings 1 Press the WB button. • The white balance mode icon will be hi ghlighted in orange . • Y ou can also select the white balance mode ico n using only the joystic k ( A 53). 2 Push the joystick up/down to sele ct the ¼ or É icon and then pr e ss the joystick.
65 Adjusting the Focus Adjusting the Focus The camcor der of fers three ways to focus. Manual focus: T urn the focus ring on the attached lens to adjust the focu s. The camcorder o ffers several focus assistance functions to help you focus mor e accurately wh en using the manual focus.
Adjusting the Focus 66 Cont inuous AF When a compatible l ens is attached to the camcorde r , you can have the camcorder f ocus automatically . 1 S et the focus mode switch on the lens to AF in advance. • Refer to the instruction manual of the lens used.
67 Adjusting the Focus Using the Focus Assist ance Functions In order to focus more accurately , you can use two focu s assistance functions – peaking, which cr eates a clear er contrast by emphasizing the outlines of the subject, an d magnif ication, which enlar g es the image on the screen.
Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns 68 Onscr een Markers and Zebra Patterns Using onscr een markers allows you to make sur e your su bject is correctly framed an d is within the appr opriate safe area. The z ebra patterns help you identify ar eas that are overexposed.
69 Onscreen Ma rkers and Ze bra Patt erns NOTES • Y ou can turn of f all other onscr een disp lays, leaving o nly the onscreen mark ers ( A 48). • If you set an assignable button to [Markers] ( A 89), you can press the button to turn the onscreen markers o n and off.
Setting the Time Code 70 Setting the Time Code The camcor der generates a time code signal and embeds it in your recor dings. Y ou can output the time code along with video outpu t fro m the HDMI O UT terminal ( A 140). For 59.94 Hz recor dings, you can also select between a dro p frame and non-drop f rame time code.

Setting the Time Code 72 NOTES • When th e frame rate is set to 24P , the frames value in th e time code runs fr om 0 to 23. When the f rame rate is set to 50i o r PF25, it ru ns fro m 0 to 24. W ith other frame r ates, it runs from 0 to 29. • When pre-r ecording mode is activated, [Fre e Ru n] is set automatically and cannot be c hanged.
73 Setting the Us er Bit Setting the Us er Bit The user bit displa y can be selected fr om the date or the time of recor ding, or an identif ication code consisting of 8 char acters in the hexadecimal system. Ther e are si xteen possible characters: the number s 0 to 9 and t he lette rs A to F .
Recording Audio 74 Rec or ding A udi o Y ou can recor d audio using the built-in stereo microphone *, commer cially available micr ophones (XLR terminal*, MIC terminal) or line in put (XLR terminal*). Using the XLR terminals, you can select th e audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2.
75 Record ing A udio Adjusting the Audio Lev el for the MIC T erm inal Y ou can adjust the audio reco rding leve l of a micropho ne attached to the MIC termi nal to auto or manual. The way to adjust the audio level depends on whether the handle unit is attached to the camcor der .

81 Video Scope s Video Scop es The camcor der can display a simplified wa veform monitor or an edge monitor* to help you focus. The video scopes appear only on the LCD scr een.
Video Scopes 82 Config uring th e Edge M onito r Using this video scope allows yo u to focus with mor e preci sion. Y ou can use the edge monitor alo ng with the other focus assistance functi ons ( A 67). The e dge monitor fe atures 2 modes. 1 Open the [E dge Monitor] submenu.
83 Reviewing a Recor ding Reviewing a Recor ding When the camcor der is in mode, yo u can r eview the last clip that was r ecorded. 1 Open the [Rec Review] submenu to set the r eview length. [ w Other Function s] > [Rec Review] 2 Select the des ire d opt ion and t hen pr ess the joy stick.
Pre-re cording Mode 84 Pr e-recor ding Mode When pre-r ecording m ode is activated, the camcorder star ts r ecording co ntinuously into a temporary memory of approxim ately 3 seconds so when you press the ST AR T/STOP button , the clip will contain also appro ximately 3 seconds of video and a udio recor ded before you pressed the button.
85 Continuous Recording Continuous Recor ding Using continuous r ecording yo u can avoid missing impor t ant shooting opportunities. Y ou need to activate the continuous recording mode using the m enu. Once continu ous re cording has started, the camcor der will keep recor ding until you acc ess the menu to stop r ecording.

4 89 Customization Assignable Buttons The camcor der conveniently features 15* buttons to which you can assign various functions. By assigning often- used functions, you can quickly access them with a single press of a button. Assignable button 7 is located on the grip unit, so its availability depends on the camcor der configuratio n used.

93 Custom Picture Settings NOTES • About changing custom picture r elated settings using t he optional RC-V100 R emote Controller - If a pr otected custom picture file or no custom pictur e file is sele cted on the camcor der ([ - / Sele ct File] is set to [Of f]) custom picture r elated settings cannot be changed using the rem ote controller .

95 Custom Picture Settings 4 Select [OK] and then press the joystick. • The file in the camcor der will be overw ritten by th e one on the SD car d. When the confirmation scr een appears, p ress the joystick. 5 Press the CUSTOM PICTURE button to exit the custom picture menu and a pply the selected custom picture settings.
