9 Important Safe ty Inst ructions To ensure the safe operation of this scanner, make sure to read the safety warnings and precautions described below. Installat ion Locat ion The performance of this scanner is affected by the environ ment in which it is installed.

11 Prepar ation Features The scanner has the following features. Compact Size The scanner has a compact size of 11" (W) × 1.57" (H) × 3.74" (D) (280 mm (W) × 40 mm (H) × 95 mm (D)) when the d ocument feed and eject trays are clos ed.
12 Prescan This feature allows you to scan jus t the first page of a document, confirm the scanned image and adjust the brightness and contrast, and then sc an the remaining pages of the document.
13 Names and Functi ons of Parts Front View A Power Indicato r When the power of the scanner is ON, this indicator displays the status of the scanner as shown below. IMPORTANT The power indicator may blink slowly when t he USB cable is connected and the feed tray is opened.
14 G Feed Exte nsion Pla te Open this plate to support the document wh en loading a long document. H Feed Inlet Insert the document to be scanned. I Start Button Press this button when you want to start scanning the document loaded in the f eed tray.

19 Connect ing the Scanner t o a Comp uter Use the supplied USB cable to c onnect the scanner to a computer. When you c onnect the scanner, the A u to Start switch on the scanner needs to be turned ON or OFF depen ding on how you will us e the scanner.
20 Power Supply The power of the scanner is designed to t urn ON when the feed tray is opened or closed. To turn the power O N or OFF, operate the scanner as described below. Turnin g ON the Power 1 Press th e feed tray re lease le ver, and lift the ar eas indicated below.
21 Turnin g OFF the Powe r 1 Close the feed extens ion guides and lower the docum ent guides. IMPORTANT Do not close the f eed tray while the document guides are spread open. This can damage to the scanner and result in malfunction. 2 Clos e th e feed tray .
22 Using an Au xiliar y Power Suppl y Since this scanner is bus-powered, scanning can be p erformed with a single USB c able. However, scanning can be perform ed at a higher speed if you us e the power supply USB cable or an AC adapter (sold separately).

25 3 Load the do cument. • Before you load the docum ent, thoroughly fan the pag es. • Load the document into the feed inlet of the scanner with the scanning side of the document face down and t he top of the documen t pointing down. • Align the document guides wit h both edges of the loaded doc um ent .
26 Scanning Pr ocedu re Supplied Softwar e The scanner comes with the following software. CaptureOnTou ch Lite This scanning application comes preinstalled in t he scanner. It enables scanning to be started without installing software, so the scanner can be shared without limiti ng it t o specific computers.
27 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch Lite CaptureOnTouch Lite is a scanning application that comes pre installed in the scanner. It can be used on a computer that does not have the scanner driver installed. You can f ollow the instructions on the screen to scan a docum ent and save the scanned images in any f ile format.
28 4 Set the scann ing con ditions. Click [Scanner setting], and set the s canning conditions in the dialog box that appear s. [Col or mo de ] Specify the m ode (color, grayscale , or black-and-white binary) fo r scanning the docum ent. To automatically detect whether the document is color or black-and-white, select [Auto Color Detection].
29 Hin t If the [Enable continuous scanning] check box was selected, the confirmation screen appears when scanning of the whole document is completed. Load the next document, and then click [Continue scanning] to start scanning the document. If you have finished scanning a ll documents, click [ Continue to next step].
30 •P D F In [Multi-pdf settings ], specify whether to save the sc anned images as a single multi-page file (“Save all pages as one file”), or to create separate files for each bat ch of a specified number of pages (“Create a file for eac h specified number of pages”).
31 When Scanning is Finished After the scanned images have been saved, you can perform the following operations. • When you want to scan another document, click [Return to main screen]. • If you click [Open storage folder], the folder in which the saved scanned images were saved opens.
32 Quitti ng Captur eOnTouch Li te Use the following proc edure to quit CaptureOnTouc h Lite. 1 Click “ X” (close button). CaptureOnTouch Lite closes. 2 Close th e feed tray. The scanner turns OFF, and the power indicator goes out. 3 Disconn ect the U SB cable from the scanne r and comput er.
33 Scanning with Ca ptureOnTouch CaptureOnTouch is a scanning application t hat allows you to follow the instructions on the screen to perform a simple scanning operation to scan a docum ent. CaptureOnTouch is provided with mu ltiple scanning methods that can be selected according to the purpose and application.
34 This method allows you to regist er the scanning procedure from the scanning conditions to the output method as one job, and then scan a document by just selecting the job that suits your purpose. This is convenient when you want to repeat scanning using a set procedure.
35 Settin g Scanni ng Conditio ns Set various scanning conditions such as the scanning method and document size. The scanning condition items are common to [Scan First] and [Select Scan Job]. For [Scan First] When using [Sc an First], configure t he scanner settings before scanning begins.
36 Scanning Side Specify whether to scan only one si de of a document or bot h sides. If you select [Skip blank page] and a blank page is detected within t he document during s canning, the blank page will be skipped. The dr iver settings are used for the d ensity th reshold at which blank pages are skipped.
37 The setting items related to output differ depending on the output method. Save file Allows you to save the scanned images in a specif ied folder. When you specify this output method, configure the settings for the im age files to be saved. Attach to E-mail Allows you to attach the scanned images to new e-mail in the e-mail application.
38 Scan Firs t Flow of Oper ation 1 Load the doc ument into the scanner. (See p. 24.) 2 Click the [S can First ] tab. The main screen of [Scan First] appears. When Using Pap erPort • PaperPort, which is supplied wit h the scanner, uses the [Documents] folder as the default folder.
39 3 Click [Sca nner se tting] to disp lay the [Scan ner set ting] dialog box, and configure the scanne r settings. For details on t he scanner setting items, see t he Help. When you have finished configuri ng the settings, click the [OK] button to close the [ Scanner setting] dialog box.
40 5 Specify the output method. 6 Configure the s ettings related to output, and then click the output bu tton to output the sca nned images . The name of the output button differs depending on the selected output method. For example, when [Save t o folder] is specified as the output method, the output button beco mes [Save].
41 Select Scan Job Flow of Oper ation Registering and Editing Jobs In CaptureOnTouch, up to 10 jobs can be registered for use wit h Select Scan Job. 1 Click the [ Select Scan Jo b] tab. The main s creen of [Select S can Job] appears. 2 Click the [New/Editing] button.
42 [Output s ettings ] tab Configure settings related to the output method. The setting items displayed differ depending on the specification for [Output method]. [Scanner setting] tab Configure the scanner settings. [Button assignmen t] tab Configure the settings for assigning t he job to a job but ton on the scanner.
43 Selecting a Job and Scanni ng 1 Load the do cume nt into the sca nner. (See p. 24.) 2 Click the [ Select Scan Jo b] tab. The main s creen of [Select S can Job] appears. 3 Se lect a jo b in [Job li st]. 4 Clic k th e [S tart ] but ton. The document is scanned.
44 Hin t • Clicking [Return to main screen] returns to the main screen of Select Scan Job. • If a job with the out put method set to [Save to folder] was executed, you can open the folder in which the image file was saved by clicking [Open s torage folder].
45 Environmental Sett ings To configure environm ental settings for Ca ptureOnTouch, click the [Environ. Settings] button in the main screen and open the [Environmental settings] dialog box. The [Environmental s ettings] dialog box is composed of the [Basic settings] tab and [E-mail settings] tab.
46 [E-mail settings] Tab The [E-mail settings] tab allows you to set the size lim it for image files that can be attached to e-mails. [Maximum size of atta ched file] If the [Display confirmation message if file size exceeds the above] check box is selected and an attached file exceeds the size li mit, a confirmation mess age will appear.
47 Scanner Driver Set tings When you scan a document in an ISIS compatible or TWAIN compatible application (CaptureOnTouch, etc.), open the scanner driver and conf igure the scanning condit ions and other settings. This section describes the configuration and functions of the scanner driver.
48 Hint When the tab is accessed from an ISIS compatible app lication, [Reverse im age] is not display ed. [Others] Tab Set the operatio n of the scanner for scanning. Basic Scanni ng Cond ition Sett ings This sectio n provides an over view of the basic setting items that are the minimum requirements when conf iguring the scanner se ttings.
49 Dots per inch Select the scanning resolution. Higher resolutions provide clearer images, but produce larger files. Scanning Side Select which page side(s) to scan. If the scanning side is set to [ Skip blank page], the images of blank pages are deleted when images are saved.
50 If [Skip blank page] is selected, the [ Setting] button is enabled, and you can adjust the level for judging whether pages are blank. When you do not want to scan co lored line s and characte rs Sp.
51 When you w ant to enhan ce text that is di fficult to re ad because o f factors s uch as the back ground of th e scanned do cument Select [Advanced Text Enhancement II] in the mode setting on the [Basic] tab. The background behind the text is removed or processed so that the text is emphasized for better legibility.
52 Functions Restricted by the Mode Setting Depending on the [Mode] setting on the [Basic] tab, some setting it ems on each tab of the driver are d isabled as shown below.

54 Scan Panel Scan Panel is software for controlling scanning operations such as feeding documents and stopping scanning when scanning multiple documents one after the other. It is usually resident in the taskbar. Double-click the icon in the taskbar to display Scan Panel.
55 Maintena nce Daily Mainte nance Clean the scanner on a regul ar basis as de scribed bel ow to maintai n scanning qua lity. WARNING • For safety reasons, make sure you close the fee d tray, turn OFF the power, and disconnect the USB cable before cleaning t he outside and inside of the scanner.
56 2 Open t he feeder c over. 3 Remo ve any dirt from the scan ning glas s, separa tion pad and ro llers insid e the sca nner ( parts show n in the figu re).
57 Replacin g Consumable Part s The feed roller and separation pad inside the scanner w ear with scanning. If the feed roller and separation pad are worn, documents may not feed correctly and paper jams may occur. When document feed performance deteriorates, replace the feed roller and separation pad.
58 3 Open t he roller cov er. 4 Lift up the roll er lock lever, and slide it to left. 5 Rem ove th e fee d ro llers. 6 Attach the feed roll ers. Align the notch on the roller with the shaft on the m ain unit side.
59 9 Close th e feeder co ver. Repla cing th e Separa tion Pad Use the following proc edure to replace the separation pad. 1 Open t he feed tray. 2 Open t he feeder c over. 3 Remove t he separat ion pad. 4 Attach the new separation pad. 5 Clos e th e feed er cove r .
60 Resetti ng the Count ers Make sure to reset the scanner’s internal counters using the following procedure whenever you replace the feed roller and separation pad. IMPORTANT This section describes the procedure to use when the Auto Start switch on the rea r panel of the scanner is set to the “OFF” pos ition.
61 Troublesh ooting Common Problems and Solutions This section prov ides recom mended solutions to c ommon problems. If you have a problem that is not solved by the following, contact your local authorized Canon dealer. Problem 1 The scanner does not turn ON.
62 Problem 5 Documents fed askew are ca using scanned images to be slanted . Solutions (1) Align the document guides to fit the documents as closely as possible, and place the documents so that they feed in s traight. (2) Enable [Deskew] in the settings of the scanner driver.
63 Software Tro ubleshoot ing Scanning ta kes a long time . (1) End any other running applications. (2) Scanning may become s low if there is insufficient system memory because applications (anti-v irus software, etc.) ar e resident in the system. Close such resident applications, and then try scanning again.
64 Questions and Answers This section pres ents some useful tips for s canning documents. Where are scanned images saved? Can the save destination be changed? Images are sav ed to the following locations, according to software settings. All of the destination locations can be changed to another folder.
65 How do I p rint scanned data? • In the case of Scan F irst of CaptureOnTouch , select [Print] in the output method select ion screen. • In the case of Select Job Scan of CaptureOnTouch, select [Print] for [Output method] when r egistering the job.
66 Clearing a Pape r Jam When paper jams during scanning, us e the following procedure to clear the jammed paper. WARNING Be careful whe n removing jammed paper. You may unexpectedly injure yourself by, f or example, cut ting your hand on an edge of t he paper.
67 Hint If a paper jam occurs when [Rapid recovery sy stem] is enabled in the scanner driver, the image of the jammed page is not saved and scanning stops.
68 Uninstalling the Software If CaptureOnTouch and the sc anner driver are not operating properly, you may be able to solve the problem by uninstalling t hem and then using the software set up disc to reinstall them. I n such a cas e, use the following procedure to uninstall them.
69 Hin t When the [U ser Account Co ntrol] dialog box appears, click [Continue]. 4 Click [Y es]. 5 Click [Finish]. Uninstallation of the software is now complete.
