Using the Energy Saver Mode This machine provides an Energy Sa v er mode. When no operations are perf or med f or about fiv e minutes , the machine automatically enters the Energy Sav er mode . • Y ou can specify the time until the machine enters the Energy Saver mode from 3 to 30 minutes.
Using the Menus and Keys This machine has a menu system that y ou use to specify or register various settings. These settings allow y ou to customiz e the wa y y our machine operates . This section provides a brief ov erview on how to use the control panel k eys to open menus and mak e selections.

Problem Documents To ensure the quality of your copies and the f ax es y ou are sending, f ollow these guidelines: • Mak e sure any glue , ink, or correction fluid on the document is completely dr y bef ore placing the document on the platen glass or loading it into the ADF .
Scan Area The shaded area in the illustration below sho ws the scan area of a document. Make sure y our document’ s text and g raphics are within this area. The scanning limit of documents set on the platen glass will diff er depending on the <MAX.
Placing Originals F or scanning, place your documents on the platen glass or load them into the ADF . Where you set up your documents depends on the siz e and type of documents you ha v e. Platen Glass 1 Open the ADF/platen glass cover . 2 Place y our document face down on the platen glass.
Orientation Use the size indicators on the left side of the platen glass to position a document. • If y our document conf or ms to a standard paper siz e (such as L TR or STMT), align the document between the appropriate paper size marks.
ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) The imageR UNNER 1670F/1630 models ha ve an ADF . 1 Make sure there is no document on the platen glass. 2 For multiple pa ge documents, fan the edg es that will feed into the machine fir st; then tap the edg es on a flat surface to e ven the stac k.
4 Load the documents face down in the ADF . The document is now ready f or scanning. • F or a multiple page document, the pages are f ed one b y one from the top of the stack (from the last page). • W ait until all pages of your document hav e been scanned bef ore star ting a new job .
Paper Path When documents are set in the ADF , the scanning unit moves to the position sho wn in the figure abov e and it is fix ed there. When a document is placed on the platen glass, the scanning unit mo ves to scan it.

Copying Documents 1 Press [COPY] to set the machine to the Cop y mode. Fo r the imageR UNNER 1630/1610 models , this operation is not required. 2 Prepare the document and place it on the platen glass or load it face down in the ADF . 3 Set the desired copy f eatures.
4 Press [Start] to begin copying. If the paper in the paper drawer or stack bypass runs out during copying, the LCD displays <SUPPL Y REC. P APER>. Load paper in the paper drawer or stack bypass. When paper is loaded, the machine automatically resumes copying.
Canceling a Copy Job While Scanning Documents in the ADF 1 Press [Stop/Reset]. 2 Press [Set]. The document that has stopped in the ADF will come out. After Scanning Documents 1 Press [Stop/Reset]. 2 Press [ 4 ] f or (Y es). If you do not want to cancel the copy job, press [ e ] for (No).
Making Multiple Copies Y ou can make multiple copies . 1 Use the numeric ke ys to enter the number of copies y ou want ➞ press [Start]. The LCD displa ys the number of copies you entered. Y ou can make up to 99 copies. • Y ou can reser ve the ne xt cop y job while the machine is outputting copies .
Selecting the Paper Feed Location When making copies on paper that cannot be loaded in the paper dra wer , such as thick paper , transparencies, labels , en velopes , or tracing paper , you can use the stack b ypass. 1 Press [P aper Select] to select the paper feed location (paper drawer or stac k b ypass).
Specifying the Paper Size The def ault paper size is <FREE SIZE>. Nor mally , you can mak e copies in this setting. Howe ver , the cop y images or the back of the paper ma y become dir ty . If this happens, y ou can pre v ent the paper from getting dir ty by specifying the paper size according to the f ollo wing instructions.
When you select <CUST OM P APER SIZE>, specify the width and length of the paper in millimeters. • A v ailable setting r ange in length: 5" (127 mm) to 14" (356 mm) • A v ailable setting r ange in width: 3" (76 mm) to 8 1/2" (216 mm) • Ref er to the f ollowing con v ersion table f or inches and millimeters.
Specifying the Paper T ype The def ault paper type is <PLAIN P APER>. When making copies on paper other than plain paper , you can specify the paper type according to the types av ailab le. Specifying the correct paper type can pre vent poor cop y quality and may pre v ent the cop y image from being printed incorrectly .
Changing the Copy (Zoom) Ratio Y ou can enlarge or reduce the copy siz e using preset cop y ratios or using custom cop y ratios. When the <MAX. SCAN LENGTH> is set to <356 mm> in <COPY SETTINGS> (from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu), the shadow of the ADF roller appears on reduced copies when using the platen glass.
• If the <P APER SIZE GROUP> option in <COPY SETTINGS> (from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu) is set to <A> or <AB>, the preset cop y r atios will be as f ollows: A: 50.
Copy Exposure Adjustments Y ou can adjust the copy e xposure automatically or man ually according to the lightness or darkness of your document. Automatic Adjustment 1 Press [Exposure] to select the auto mode. 2 Press [Set]. The copy exposure is adjusted automatically .
Manual Adjustment 1 Press [Exposure] twice to select the manual mode. 2 Press [ 4 ] or [ e ] to adjust the copy exposure. For a lighter copy e xposure, press [ 4 ]. For a darker cop y exposure, press [ e ]. 3 Press [Set]. When setting the e xposure to a lighter copy , the indicator moves to the left.
Image Quality Adjustments Y ou can adjust image quality to the lev el best suited f or a document with te xt or photos. Three modes are a vailab le f or adjusting image quality: text, te xt/photo , and photo . 1 Press [Image Quality] to select the image quality .
Special Copying Features The machine has the f ollowing SPECIAL COPY f eatures . These features allo w y ou to sort copies in page order and create special copies easily .
3 Use the numeric ke ys to set the copy quantity ➞ press [Start]. The machine begins scanning from the last page of the document. After scanning, the scanned documents will come out in order .
4 Press [Start]. The machine begins scanning. 5 Place the next pa ge of the document on the platen glass ➞ press [Start]. Repeat this step to scan all documents. 6 Press [Set]. The machine begins printing out the copies. When scanning multiple page documents, the message <MEMOR Y FULL> may appear in the LCD and scanning is canceled.
• The 2 on 1 cop y function is not a vailab le with an enlarging or reducing function. • If letter size paper is not loaded in the paper dr awer , the message <LOAD L TR SIZE P APER> appears in the LCD and the 2 on 1 copy is canceled.
When scanning multiple page documents, the messages <MEMOR Y FULL> and <PRESS SET KEY> ma y appear in the LCD , and the document being scanned stops in the ADF . Press [Set] to make the document come out automatically . In this case, reduce the number of pages to be scanned or change image quality mode to <TEXT>.
5 Place the next pa ge of the document on the platen glass ➞ press [Start]. Repeat this step to scan all documents. 6 Press [Set] to finish the 2 on 1 copy function. • After scanning e v er y two sheets , the quantity of copies of the document specified in step 2 will print out.
Reser ved Copying Y ou can set the machine to scan or iginals e v en while it is printing a job . By having the machine scan the originals first, cop ying will star t automatically once the machine is av ailab le. Reserving the Next Copy Job 1 Press [Stop/Reset] twice while the machine is printing.
4 Press [Start]. The machine begins scanning. • After printing of the current copy job is complete , the ne xt cop y job begins. • If the machine’ s memor y becomes full while scanning, the message <MEMOR Y FULL> appears in the LCD . When the ADF is used for scanning, the document being scanned stops in the ADF .
Deleting the Copy Job Y ou Reserved 1 Press [Stop/Reset] while the machine is printing. 2 Press [ 4 ] or [ e ] to display the job to be deleted. 3 Press [Set]. 4 Press [ 4 ] (Y es). The reser v ed cop y job is deleted. • T o cancel deleting the copy job , press [ e ] (No).
T wo-Sided Copying Using the stack b ypass, y ou can cop y two documents on opposite sides of a single sheet. When Loading Documents in the ADF The imageR UNNER 1670F/1630 models ha ve an ADF . 1 Load the first pa ge of the document face down in the ADF ➞ press [Start] to begin copying.
3 T urn over the cop y y ou made in step 1 to make sure that the inner and front side of it will remain in the same position as shown belo w ➞ insert it into the stack bypass. If the copied sheet is curled, uncur l it bef ore inser ting it into the stac k bypass .
When Placing a Document on the Platen Glass 1 Place the first pa ge of the document face down on the platen glass ➞ press [Start] to begin copying. Make sure to open the stac k bypass and pull out the paper tr a y . (See “Loading P aper in the Stack Bypass , ” on p.

About Additional Functions The <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menus allow y ou to specify or register v arious settings. These settings allow y ou to customize the w ay y our machine operates .

Paper Handling Print Media Requirements F or high quality copies, use paper and transparencies recommended b y Canon. Some types of paper av ailab le at office supply stores ma y not be suitable f or this machine. If you ha ve an y questions about paper and transparencies , consult your local authorized Canon dealer .

Printable Areas Please note that the term “printing area” represents both the recommended area f or optimum print quality and the entire area where the machine can technically print. • The pr inting area is shown b y light shading. Canon recommends that you print within this area.
Loading Paper Loading Paper in the Paper Drawer This section describes how to load paper in the paper dra wer . When loading paper , take care not to cut y our hands on the edges of the paper . 1 Grip the paper drawer handle, and pull it towar ds y ou until the paper drawer comes to a stop.
3 Load the paper stack under the paper dra wer’ s length guide and width guides . • Make sure that the paper stac k does not e xceed the length and width guides in the paper dra wer . Failure to do so ma y cause paper jams. • Do not load more paper when there is still paper left in the paper dra wer .
• When closing the paper dra wer , make sure to push it in completely . If you attempt to cop y when the paper draw er is not pushed in completely , paper jams ma y occur . • Sometimes, when y ou pull out the paper dra wer , paper may stic k out, as shown in the illustration below .
2 Slide the length guide while lifting it up slightly , and align the length guide with the length mark for the paper y ou plan to load in the paper drawer .
Loading Paper in the Stack Bypass Use the stack b ypass when y ou want to print on special paper , such as env elopes , transparencies, labels or hea vy paper . Y ou can place up to 100 sheets of 20 lb bond (80 g/m 2 ) paper (which is a stack appro ximately 3/16" or 10 mm high) in the stack b ypass.
4 Adjust the slide guides to fit the size of the paper stack. If the slide guides are not adjusted correctly f or the paper size, the quality of y our print images ma y be adversely aff ected. • When making copies on letter siz e paper after having continuously copied on paper smaller than letter size paper , the copies may be dirty .
Loading Envelopes in the Stack Bypass Canon recommends using these env elopes: COM10, MONARCH, DL, ISO-B5, ISO-C5, Y OGA T A #4, or Y OGA T A #2. Using other envelopes ma y affect the quality of the cop y image. 1 Arrange the stack of en velopes on a firm, clean surface, and press down firml y on the edges to make the folds crisp.
3 Run a pen or other rounded object along the bac k flaps to flatten them. The flaps should not bulge more than 0.2" (5 mm). 4 Insert the stack of en velopes into the stac k b ypass , and adjust the slide guides to fit the size of the en velope .
• If you are making copies on en v elopes, the orientation of a document and the loading position of the env elope are re v ersed. • T o select the type of env elope to be loaded in the stack b ypass, f ollo w the procedure below: Press [ 4 ] or [ e ] to displa y/select the follo wing menu items .
Routine Cleaning Y our machine requires little per iodic maintenance. This section descr ibes the necessar y cleaning procedures f or y our machine. • When cleaning the machine’ s exterior or the platen glass, be sure to disconnect the power cor d before c leaning the machine.
Cleaning the Scanning Area Wipe the scanning area (shaded area) with a clean, soft, lint free cloth moistened with water . Then wipe the area with a clean, soft, dr y , lint free cloth. Cleaning the Read Area of the Platen Glass Black lines ma y appear in copies (as shown in the illustration below) when the ADF is used to f eed documents.
Cleaning the Rollers Inside the Main Unit If the rollers inside the main unit are dir ty , the cop y quality will deteriorate. In this case, y ou can clean the rollers using the <ADJUST/CLEAN> setting from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu.
Cleaning the ADF Roller The imageR UNNER 1670F/1630 models ha ve an ADF . If the ADF roller is dir ty , your documents will be dirty after you f eed them into the ADF . Y ou can clean the ADF roller using the <ADJUST/CLEAN> setting from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu.
6 Each time y ou press [Set], the ADF roller r otates about 1/3 of the roller . Wipe the ADF r oller with a dry cloth. Repeat this step until the ADF roller is clean. Do not touch the ADF r oller while it is being rotated. Y our fingers or c lothing ma y be pinched in the r oller , resulting in per sonal injury .
Replacing the T oner Cartridge This section describes how to remov e the used toner car tridge and replace it with a new one . When the message <T ONER LEVEL LO W> or <T ONER EMPTY> appears in the LCD , replace the toner car tridge.
2 Pull the toner cartridg e lever to war ds y ou. 3 Holding the lever , turn it cloc kwise so that the mark on the toner cartridg e aligns with the ∆ mark on the machine . Holding the toner cartridg e lever , keep the toner cartridg e level and pull it out slo wly fr om the machine .
6 Holding the toner cartridg e steady with one hand, firmly and slowl y pull the sealing tape tab with the other hand to remove the sealing tape completel y .
Repacking and T ransporting the Machine Be sure to disconnect the power cord bef ore transpor ting the machine. If the machine is likely to be subjected to vibr ation (f or e xample, when transporting ov er long distances), be sure to tak e the precautions described below .
Repacking and T ranspor ting the Machine 5-23 6 Attach the shipping attachment on the left side of the machine using a coin. Affix the label that was remo ved from the machine during unpacking. Lifting the Machine Be sure to lift the machine using the handles on each side.
T ransporting the Machine by Car 1 Pa ck the machine, using the original packing material and bo x. 2 Place the machine on a le vel, stable surface . • Do not leav e the machine inside a car f or a long period of time; the temperature can become very high or low .

Clearing Paper Jams This section describes how to remov e jammed paper from the main unit, paper dra wer , ADF , and stack bypass . Removing Jammed Paper from Inside the Main Unit When print media jams inside the main unit, the LCD displays the messages <REC .
1 Lift the platen unit lever and slide the platen unit until the 3 4 mark appears. 2 Open the drum cartridg e co ver . 3 Remove the drum cartridge from the machine.
4 Flip the transfer guide. 5 Gently remo ve an y jammed paper from inside the main unit. Be sure to remov e jammed paper from inside the main unit e ven when the jammed paper has been par tially output.
7 Gently remo ve an y jammed paper from inside the main unit, then close the right co ver . 8 Pull out the cassette and reset any paper stuc k out of the cassette. Then, push the cassette back into the main unit. 9 Return the transfer guide to the original position.
10 Slide the platen unit to the original position. The printout will star t again. Removing Jammed Paper from the ADF The imageR UNNER 1670F/1630 models ha ve an ADF . When print media jams in the ADF , the LCD displays the messages <CHECK DOCUMENT> and <OPEN THE ADF>.
3 Open the ADF , then pull the paper out straight. • Open the ADF and mak e sure there is no document left. • After removing jammed paper , ev en the edges of the document and reload it in the ADF .
Removing Jammed Paper from the Stack Bypass When print media jams in the stack bypass , the LCD displa ys the messages <REC . P APER JAM> and <SLIDE PLA TEN LEFT>. 1 Gently remo ve the jammed paper fr om the stack b ypass. • Be sure to chec k f or any jammed paper inside the machine.
List of LCD Display Messages The f ollowing messages are displa y ed in the LCD when the machine perf orms a function or if it encounters an error . This section describes the general messages and those related to cop y functions. For the messages related to f ax functions, see Chapter 8, “T roubleshooting, ” in the F acsimile Guide .
DOCUMENT T OO LONG The document is longer than 14" (356 mm). Reduce the length of the document to within 14" (356 mm), and cop y it again. The ADF roller rotates without f eeding documents.
List of LCD Displa y Messages 6-11 REC . P APER JAM SLIDE PLA TEN LEFT There is a paper jam. Clear the paper jam and reload paper in the paper dra wer or stack b ypass. (See “Clearing Paper J ams, ” on p . 6-2.) REMO VE DOC . ON GLASS A document has been left on the platen glass.
SYSTEM ERROR Exxx An error of some kind has occurred in the machine. (xxx stands for a number .) Disconnect the machine from the power supply and w ait f or 10 minutes, then reconnect it. If this does not solve the prob lem, disconnect the machine and call y our local authorized Canon dealer .
If T rouble Occurs If an error occurs during copying, or there is an abnormality in the machine, check the f ollowing points. Paper Feeding Problems P aper does not f eed correctly .
Multiple sheets f eed into the machine at the same time. P aper ma y not be loaded correctly . Make sure the paper stac k is loaded properly in the paper draw er or stack b ypass, and that the length guide of the paper dra wer and the slide guides of the stack b ypass are adjusted correctly .
Env elopes do not f eed correctly . Env elopes are loaded in the paper dra wer . Do not load the env elopes in the paper dra wer . Load them in the stack bypass . Env elopes ma y not be loaded correctly . Make sure the en v elopes are loaded properly .
The message <MEMOR Y FULL> or <MAKING SP ACE IN MEM> appears in the LCD when making copies of a multiple page document. P aper in the paper dra wer or stac k bypass ma y ha ve run out. If there is no paper and the machine’ s memory becomes full dur ing cop ying, the messages <MAKING SP ACE IN MEM> and <SUPPL Y REC.
Copies are dir ty . The platen glass or rear side of the ADF/platen glass cov er ma y be dir ty . Clean the platen glass or rear side of the ADF/platen glass cov er . (See “Cleaning the Read Area of the Platen Glass, ” on p . 5-15.) The rollers inside the machine are dir ty .
The cop y images are missing when you mak e copies on env elopes . The <BYP ASS P APERTYPE> setting in <COMMON SETTINGS> (from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu) ma y not be set correctly . Select <SPECIAL P APER 2> in <BYP ASS P APERTYPE>.
A cop y of a large size document cannot be made using the platen glass. <330 mm> ma y be selected in <MAX. SCAN LENGTH> in <COPY SETTINGS> from the <ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS> menu. (Only for the imageR UNNER 1670F/1630 models.) Select <356 mm> in <MAX.
Nothing appears in the LCD . The power cord ma y not be connected securely . Check that the po wer cord is connected securely into the machine and into the wall outlet. Inser t the power cord str aight into the power cord connector on the left side of the machine.
