9 Safety Precautions • Before using the camera, please ensure that you read the safety precautions described below. Always ensure that the camera is operated correctly. • The safety precautions noted on the following pages are intende d to prevent injuries to yourself and other persons, or damage to the equipment.
10 Safety Precautions Battery and Battery Charger Other Warnings • Use only recommended batteries. • Do not place the battery near or in direct flame. • Do not let the battery come into contact with water (e.g. sea water) or other liquids. • Do not attempt to disassemble, alter or apply heat to the battery.
11 Safety Precautions • When using the flash, be careful not to cover it with your fingers or clothing. This could result in burns or damage to the flash. Caution • Do not aim the camera at bright light sources (the sun, etc.). Doing so may cause malfunctions or damage the image sensor.

13 1 Getting Started This chapter explains preparations before shooting, how to shoot in A mode, and then how to view and erase t he images you take. The latter part of this chapter expl ains how to shoot and vie w movies and transfer images to a comp uter.
14 Charging the Battery Use the incl uded char ger to charg e the batte ry. Be sure to charge the battery as it is not c harged at the ti me of purchase. Remove the cover. Insert the battery. ● Align the S marks on the battery and charger, t hen insert the batt ery by sli ding it in and down .
15 Charging the Battery Approximate Number of Shots That Can Be Taken • The number of shots that can be taken is based on the Camera & Ima ging Products Association (CIPA) measurement standard. • Under some shooting conditions, the number of shots that can be take n may be less than mentioned above.

17 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card Insert the battery. ● Insert the b attery as sho wn until it lo cks into place wit h a click. ● Be sure to insert the battery in the correct direction or it will not properly loc k into place. Insert the memory card.
18 Inserting the Battery and Memory Card Removing the Battery and Memory Card Remove t he battery . ● Open the cove r and press the battery lock in the direc tion of the arro w. X The battery will pop up. Remove the memory card. ● Push the memory card i n until you hear a click, then slowly re lease it.
19 Setting the Date and Time The Date/Time se ttings scre en will appea r the first time the camera is tu rned on. Since th e dates and times re corded into yo ur images are ba sed on these settings, b e sure to s et them. Turn on the camera. ● Press the ON/OF F button.
20 Setting the Date and Time Changing the Date and Time You can change the current da te and time set tings. Display the menus. ● Press the n but ton. Choose [Date/Time] in th e 3 tab. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se the 3 tab. ● Press the op b uttons to choose [Date/ Time], then press the m button.
21 Setting the Display Language You can change the language t hat display s on the screen. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. Display the settings scr een. ● Press and hold the m button, then press the n button. Set the disp lay languag e.
22 Formatting Memory Cards Before you us e a new memory card or one that has be en formatted in o ther devices, yo u should for mat the car d with this c amera. Format ting (initia lizing) a memory car d erases a ll data on th e memory car d. As you c annot retr ieve the erased da ta, exercise ad equate cauti on before fo rmatting the memo ry card.
23 Pressing the Shutter Button ● Press the m butt on. Pressing the Shutter Button To take imag es that are in focus, be sure to first pres s the shutt er button lightly (hal fway) to focu s, then p ress fully t o shoot. Press halfway (lightly to focus).
24 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) Since the came ra can determine the subject a nd shooting co nditions, you can let it a utomatically select th e best setti ngs for t he scene and just shoot . The camera can a lso detect an d focus on faces , setting t he color and brightness to optimal le vels.
25 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) Focus. ● Press the s hutter butto n halfway to focus. X When the came ra focuses, it will beep twice and AF fra mes will appear w here th e camera focuse d. Several AF fr ames will appear wh en the camera focuse s on more than one point.
26 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) Scene Icons The camera dis plays an icon f or the scene it ha s determin ed and then automatic ally focuses and selects the o ptimum setting s for subject brightnes s and color. * Appears when the scene is dark and the camera is attached to a tr ipod.
27 Taking Pictures (Smart Auto) What if... • What if white and gray frames appear when you point the came ra toward a subject? When faces are detected, a white frame appears on th e face of the main subject, while gray frames appear on other detected f aces.
28 Viewing Images You can view th e images you ha ve taken on the scr een. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear. Choose an image. ● Pressing t he q butto n will cycle thr ough the images in th e reverse order they were taken, from the newest im age to the oldest.
29 Erasing Images You can cho ose and er ase image s one at a t ime. Please note that er ased images canno t be recovered . Exercise ade quate caution before erasing an image. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou took will appear.
30 Shooting Movies The camera can a utomatical ly select all se ttings so that you can shoot movies just by pressing the sh utter button . Enter E mode. ● Set the mode switch to E . Compose the shot. ● Moving the zoom lev er toward i will zoom in on your sub ject, making it appear larger.
31 Shooting Movies X Recording w ill start, and [ Rec] and the elapsed time will appear on th e screen. ● Once shooti ng begins, t ake your fi nger off the shutter but ton. ● If you chan ge the compo sition of yo ur shot during sh ooting, the focus will sta y the same, but the b rightness and t one will automatical ly adjust.
32 Viewing Movies You can view th e movies you have shot on the scr een. Enter Playback mode. ● Press the 1 butt on. X The last image y ou shot will appear. X appears on movies. Choose a movie. ● Press the qr buttons to choo se a movie , then press th e m button.
33 Transferring Images to a Computer for Viewing You can use t he include d software to transfer i mages you have shot with th e camera to a comp uter for view ing. If you are al ready using ZoomBrowser EX/ImageBrow ser, install th e software from the included CD-ROM, overwritin g your curr ent installa tion.

58 Zooming in Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) You can use the digital zoo m to zoom up to a maximu m equivalent of 16x and captur e subjec ts that are too far awa y for the o ptical zoom t o enlarg e. The images may appear coa rse, however, d epending on t he recording p ixel setting (p.
59 Zooming in Closely on Subjects (Digital Zoom) Digital Tele-Converter The focal le ngth of the le ns can be increa sed by an equiva lent of 1.5x or 2.0x. This enables a faster shut ter speed and less chance of c amera shake than the zoo m (including digital zoom) us ed by itself at the same zoom factor.
60 Inserting the Date a nd Time You can inser t the shooting d ate and time in the lower right corner of an image. Once in serted, however, t hey cannot be deleted . Be sure t o check beforehand that the d ate and time are corr ectly set (p . 19) . Choose [Date Stamp].
61 Using the Self-Timer The self-ti mer can be used to shoot a group phot o that inc ludes th e photograph er. The camera will ac tivate approx imately 10 secon ds after the shutter but ton is pressed. Press the p button. Choose Ò . ● Press the op bu ttons to choo se Ò , then press the m button.

78 Changing the AF Frame Mode You can change the AF (Auto Focu s) frame mode to matc h the conditi ons you want t o shoot. Choose [AF Frame]. ● Press the n button, choose th e 4 tab, and then choose the [AF F rame] menu item. Pr ess the qr buttons to choose an opti on.
79 Changing the AF Frame Mode Center The AF fram e is locked to the cen ter. This is effectiv e for focus ing on a specific poin t. You can reduce the AF frame size • Press the n button, choose the 4 tab, then choose the [A F Frame Size] menu item and [Small] option.

81 Shooting with the AF Lock The focus can be loc ked. After l ocking the focus, the focal distan ce will no t change ev en when you release yo ur finger from the shu tter button . Lock the focus. ● Keep the shutt er button pres sed halfway and press the q button .
82 Shooting with the AE Lock You can lock t he exposure and shoot, or set the focus and expo sure separately to shoot. AE stands for “Auto Exposur e” Lock the exp osure. ● Point the camera towa rd the subj ect and press the o button while pres sing the shutter butto n halfway.
83 Correcting the Brightness and Shooting (i-Contrast) The camera can d etect areas i n the scene, such a s faces or backg rounds, that are to o bright or dark an d automatica lly adjust them to the opti mum brightness when shooti ng.

85 Shooting with Slow Synchro You can make t he main subj ect, such a s people, appe ar bright b y having the camera provi de the appr opriate illuminat ion with the flash. At the same time , you can u se a slow shutter s peed to br ighten the background that th e light from the flash cannot reach.

97 Checking the Focus You can magnif y the area of a reco rded image tha t was inside th e AF Frame, or th e area o f a face tha t was detecte d, to chec k the focus . Press the l button, and sw itch to the focus check display (p. 44) . X A white frame wi ll appear where t he AF frame or face was when the focus was set.
98 Magnifying Images Move the zoom lever toward k . ● The display will zoom in on the image and will appear. If you continu e to hold the zoom le ver, it wi ll continue to zoom in up to a maximum factor of 10x. ● If you press the opqr buttons, yo u can move the locat ion of the displa yed area.
99 Viewing Images on a TV Using the supplied AV cable (p. 2) , you can connec t the camera to a TV to view imag es you h ave shot. Turn off the camera and T V. Connect the camera to th e TV. ● Open the camera’ s terminal cove r and fully inse rt the cable p lug into the camera’s termin al.
