22 Attaching and Detachin g the Eye Cup Y ou can change the position of the eye cup for use with either th e left or right eye. Detach the eye cup and reattach it when changing the position of the eye cup for right or left eye use.
23 Prepara tions Adjusting the Pos ition of the Viewfinder The viewfinder position can be changed (right/left, fo r ward/bac kwar d). When storing the camcor der in the optional HC-3200 System Case, adjust the viewfinder to the right and lock it. 28 Proper operatio n cannot be guaranteed when recor ding in HDV standard with the optio nal Extender XL 1.6x. The mes sage “HD INCOMP A TIBLE LENS ” will app ear when using the extender , even with an HD-compatible lens. Attaching the Lens H ood Attach the lens hood to pr otect the lens and shade it fr om str ay light.

30 Using the W irele ss Contr oller When you pr ess the buttons on the wi rele ss contr oller , point it at one of th e camcor der’ s remote sens ors. The camcorder has 3 rem ote sensors: 2 at the front and 1 at the back. Inserting the Batteries The wir eless controller operates with two AA (R6) batteries.
31 Prepara tions Loading/Removing a Cassette Use only videocassettes marked with the logo. For rec ordin g in HDV we re commend you use videocassettes designed for HDV recor ding. 1. Sl ide the EJECT switch to open the cassett e compartmen t cover . The cassette compartment opens automatically .
32 Inserting/Removing a Memor y Card Y ou can use SDHC (SD High Capacity) memory cards, SD memo ry car ds or MultiMedia Car ds (MMC) with this camcor der . Inserting the Card 1. Set th e dial to OFF . 2. Push the switch in the dir ection of the arrow to open the memory car d slot cover .

36 Recording Recording The default re cordin g standar d is HDV . About the audio r ecording, r efer to the relevant chapter ( 57). Recording 1. Remove the lens cap. 2. Pr ess the loc k button and set t he dial to a r ecording pr ogram. 3. Press t he Start/Stop button to begi n r ecording.
37 Recor ding Low- angle R eco rdin g The carrying handle is equipped with a duplicate set of recor ding and zoom contr o ls, ideal for low-angle reco rding. Slide the L OCK switch in the directio n of the arr ow to prevent the accidental operation of these contr ols.
38 Screen Displays while R ecording Tim e c o d e Y ou can select between drop frame or non- drop frame time code ( 52). Rem aini ng tape Indicates the remaining time on the tape in minutes. “ END” will ap pear when the tape reaches the en d. • When the time l eft is less than 15 seconds, the remaining tape time may not appear .
39 Recor ding Selecting the On-Scr een Displays Y ou can select the amount of information shown on the screen fro m full, partial or no display . Repeatedly pressing the EVF DI S PLA Y button will cycle thro u gh the options in the following sequence.
40 Selecting the Signal Standa rd and Aspect Ratio Y ou can select the signal standard of your recor ding (high definition or standar d definition) and, for standard def inition recor dings, also the aspect ratio of the recor ding.
41 Recor ding Locating the End of the Last Scene Y ou can use this function to locate the end of the last recor ded scene. Pr ess the END SEARCH bu tton. • appears. • The camcor der rewinds/fast forwards the tape, plays back the last few seconds of the r ecording and stops the tape.
42 Zooming Y ou can operate the zo om using the zoom lever o n the side grip or the one on the carr ying handle. Y ou can also use the zoom ring on th e lens or the zoom buttons on the wir eless controller .
43 Recor ding Zoom bu ttons o n the carryi ng hand le: The zoom speed is constant and can be set to one of 16 zoom speed levels. Set the ZOOM SPE ED switch to CON ST ANT and change the zoom speed level as described previously . Zoom buttons on the suppli ed wireless contr oller: The zoom speed is constant and cannot be adjusted.
44 Adjusting the Focus Functions in this chapter ar e ex plained using the HD 20x L IS III lens. If you ar e using a dif f ere nt lens, refer also to the instruction manual of the lens .
45 Recor ding Autofocus may n ot work well on the following subjects. In that case, focus manually . - Reflective surfaces - Subjects with low contrast or without vertical lines - Fast moving subjects - Through d irty or w et windo ws - Night scenes Manual focus 1.
46 Using the Focus A ssist Functions (Peaking and Ma gnifying) In or der to make manual focusing easier , you can use two assist functions: Peak ing emphasizes the outlines of the subject cr eating a clearer contrast, and Magnifying enlar ges the image on the screen.
47 Recor ding Focus Preset (lenses with focus preset function) This function enables a focus position to be memorized. Later , you can r e turn to the preset fo cus position instantly . Y ou can also select the speed at which the camcor der retu rns to the preset focus position.
48 Macro Shooting (Focus Limit) Usually the camcor der’ s focus range allows macro shootin g. Y o u can activate the focus limit to restrict the focus ran ge. Using the HD 2 0x L IS III lens, the focus range 10 cm - (at full w ide-angle) is limited to 1 m - (throughout the entire zoom range).
49 Recor ding Using the ND Filter (lenses with built-in ND filter) When reco rding in bright surr oundings, the camcor der will set a small apertur e value and the picture ma y appear blurred. When using a len s with a built-in ND filte r , tur n the ND filter on /off a ccording to the screen display .
50 Selecting the Frame Rate Y ou can select from the foll owing frame rates depending on the recor ding mode: 60i, 30 F , 24F ( 2:3 pulldo wn-conver ted) 60i, 30 F , 24F ( 2:3 pulldo wn-conve rted or 2:3:3:2 pulldown- converte d) 60i Mode Records 60 interlaced fields per second, th e same as standard-definition TV signals.
51 Recor ding Selecting the Fr ame Rate Set the FRAM E RA TE swit ch to the d esired position . • i: 60i Mode, F1: 30F Mode, F2 : 24F M ode. • The selected frame rate appears on-screen.
52 Setting the T ime Code Selecting the Frame Setting When reco rding in a mode other than SD at a frame rate of 24F , you can select between drop frame o r non-drop fram e time code. Open the menu and sel ect [SIGNAL SETUP]. Sele ct the [TIME CODE] submenu and then [FRAME SET TNG].
53 Recor ding In SD mode with the frame rate set to 24F , the frames value of the time code can be set only in multiples of 5. When you change the frame rate fr om 60i/30F to 24F , the frames value of the time code will automatically become a multiple of 5 .
54 Synchronizing the Camcorder ’ s T ime Code Y ou can synchronize this camcor der’ s time code to an extern al time code generator . Y ou can also include in the r ecor ding the user bit signal rec eived from th e TC-IN terminal ( 56). The camcor d er offer s the following synchr onization options.
55 Recor ding When an exter nal time code signal is received, the camcorder's own time code will be synchronized to it and the synchronization will be maintain ed even if yo u disconnect the cable from the TC-IN terminal.
56 Setting the User Bit The user bit display can be selected fro m the date or the time of recor ding, or an identification code consisting of 8 characters in the hexadecimal system that is useful for labeling tapes. There are sixteen possible characters: the numbers 0 to 9 and the letters A to F .
57 Recor ding Audio Recording When reco rding on the tape in either HDV or DV standar d, audio is r ecorded on two channels. The audio transfer rate is 384 kbps and the sampling fr equency is 48 kHz. Y o u can record audio in 16- bit mode ( samplin g frequen cy 48 kHz) , or 12-bit mo de (samp ling frequency 32 kHz).
58 Recording Audio Select the audio input fr om FRONT (supplied microphone), XLR MIC (XLR terminals) or XLR LINE (XLR terminals). Y ou can select the audio input independently for channel 1 and channel 2 . Using the Front Microphone Set the IN PUT SELECT switch t o FRON T MIC.
59 Recor ding Adjusting the Audio Recording Level If the audio level is too high and the sound sounds distorted, activate the microphone attenuator (20 dB), by setting the FRONT MIC A T T . switch or the corresponding switch to A TT . Hiding/D isplaying the Au dio Leve l Indicator Open the menu and select [DISPL A Y SETUP/ ].
60 Y ou can select to synchronize the audio signal with the video signal by adding an equal amount of delay to the audio. Open the menu and select [A UDIO SETUP]. Select [MONITOR SEL.], set it to [LINE OUT] and close the menu. If you wish to monitor audio in real time, select [NORMAL] instead.
61 Recor ding Image Stabilizer (lenses with image st abilization functi on) Y ou can select to activate the image stabilizer or turn it off depending on the recor ding conditions. T o turn off the i mage stabilizer usi n g the HD 20x L IS III l ens: Set the ST ABILI ZER ON /OFF sw itch to OF F .
62 Using the Programmed AE Modes Prog rammed auto exposur e modes provide advan ced automated recor ding techniques ensuring professional r esults in va rious shooting co nditions. Manual ( 65) This mode offers th e creative fr eedom of a complete range of manual contr ols.
63 Recor ding Easy Recording The camcorder auto matically controls the focus, shutter speed, apertur e, gain, white balance, and AE Shift allowing you to s imply point and film. Thi s mode lock s all of these features an d options, making them fixed and unadjustable.

65 Recor ding Recording in Manual Mode Y ou can set the exposur e at any combination of shutter speed and aperture. The apertur e value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the aperture value displayed on the scr een will change only in 1/4 EV stops.
66 With the custom function [LANC AE SHIF T] ( 104), you can change the function of the AE SHIF T dial on th e optional ZR-20 00 Zoom Remote Co nt roller and use it to change the apertur e value.
67 Recor ding Recording in Shutter -Priority (Tv) Mode Available shut ter sp eeds whe n record ing m ovies depen d on the s electe d fram e rate : Available shutter sp eeds when record ing still images: 1/4*, 1/8, 1 /15, 1/30 , 1/60, 1/ 100, 1/25 0, 1/500 * Only with the HD 20x L IS II or HD 20x L IS III Lens.
68 Recording in Aperture-Priority (Av) Mode The apertur e value can be adjusted in 1/16 EV stops; however , the aperture value displayed on the screen will change only in 1/4 EV stops. Available aper ture valu es (wi th th e HD 20x L IS II or HD 20x L IS III lens) F1.
69 Recor ding Adjusting the Exposure Exposure Lock 1. Set th e dia l to , Tv or Av . 2. Pr ess the EXP . LOCK button. • The exposure indicator appears. Use the exposure indicator as an estimate. • The mark above the indicator indicates the standard exposur e (calculated by the camcor der).
70 Gain The gain contr ol adjusts the level of the video signal generated depend ing on the lighting an d shooting conditions. Select automati c gain contr ol, one of the preset gai n level ranging fr om -3 dB to +18 dB or fine-tune the gain level in 0 .
71 Recor ding White Balance The camcor der uses an electron ic white balance proc ess to calibrate the picture f or accurate color display under differ ent lighting conditions.
72 Setting a Cu stom White Balanc e 1. Set the POWER dial to a r ecording pr ogram other than . 2. Press t he WH ITE B ALANCE dial so that it pop s out . 3. Set the WHITE BALANCE dial to one of the custom pr eset positions, A or B. 4. Point th e camcor der at a whit e object and zoom in u ntil it f ills the whole scr een.
73 Recor ding Zebra Pattern This camcor der has a zebra pattern featur e that shows black and white diagonal str ipes over the ar eas that are over exposed. The zebra patter n is only displayed on the screen an d will not affect your reco rdings. The zebra pattern will not be displayed while the Peaking function is activated ( 46).
74 Color Correction With the color corr ection function you can set the camcor d er to detect the characteristics of a certain color or pattern (color phase, ch roma, ar ea and Y level) and correct them automatically when recor ding. Y ou can set the color correctio n for up to two differ ent colors (A and B).
75 Recor ding Activ ating the Co lor C orrecti on 1. Open the menu and select [CAMERA SETUP] and select the [C OLOR CORR.] sub menu . 2. Select [CO RR ECT], select a correction mode and close the men u. • Y ou can correct only the pr edefined A ar ea, only the predefine d B area or both.
76 Skin Detail Function With the skin detail function you can set the camcorder to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone. Detail in the tar geted areas w ill be soft ened in or der to conceal skin imperfec tions. T argeted areas will be identified on the scre en by a zebra patter n alternating with the normal picture.
77 Recor ding Selective Noise Reduction With the selective noise r eduction function you can set the camco rder to detect the characteristics of a certain color or tone and automatic ally reduce noise in the targe ted areas.
78 Clear Scan This fe ature allo ws you to rec o rd a computer’ s CRT sc reen or other equipment with out displaying black band or flicker on the scr een. Y o u can adjust the frequency fr om 60 .1 Hz to 203.9 Hz. 1. Set the dial to Tv or M. 2. Repeatedly pr ess the SHUTTER button to set th e sh utter s peed to “CS”.
79 Recor ding Custom Keys Y ou can assign frequently used functio ns to the custom keys. The custom keys can have dif f erent functions assigned to them in each of the oper ating modes. Default sett ings: T o check th e curr ent cu stom key setting s: In a re cord ing m ode : Ope n the menu a nd se le ct [DI SPLAY SETUP/ ].
80 Changing the Custom Key s Setting * Defaul t valu e in mod e. Open the menu and select [SYSTEM SETUP/ ]. Select [CUSTOM KEY 1] or [CUSTOM KEY 2], s elec t the f unctio n you w ish to assi gn to the cu stom k ey an d clos e the m enu. When you do not wish to use the custom keys, select [(NONE)].
81 Recor ding [TC HOLD] Time C ode Hold Y ou can press the custom ke y button to fre ez e the display of the time code. T h e time code will c ontinue running normally even while the time code display is on hold. Time code hold can only be operated with the custom keys.
82 [CP BKWD KEY] Custom Prese t Backward Key Press the C USTO M KEY 2 butt on. Usually , pressing the CUSTOM PRE SET SELECT button will cycle forwards to the following custom pr eset file. Pressing the custom key butto n instead w ill cycle backwards to the preceding custom preset file.
83 Recor ding Color Bars/A udio Refere nce Signal Y ou can generate and recor d color bars signals and a 1 kHz audio refer ence signal. With the customized fun ctions ( 104) you can choose between SMP.
84 Ext ernal Connec tions V ideo Signal Output Standards The standar d of the video signal output fr om the HD/SD SDI ( only), COMPONENT OUT an d HDV/DV terminals depe nds on the standard used for r ecordin g (or the standard of the re cording on the tape being played back) and on variou s menu settings.

88 Usin g the VI DEO IN/ OUT or (S-V ideo) IN/OU T T erminal W e recommend powerin g the camcorder fr om a household power outlet. TV sets w ith S1-Video t ermina ls : Reco rdings made with a 16: 9 aspect ratio ( 40) will be played automatically in widescreen mode if you connect the camcorder to the TV using the S-VIDEO terminal.
89 External Connections Connection to a Standard Definition TV or Monitor Using the COMPONEN T OUT T erminal • Refer to the con nection diagram in the pr evious section ( 87). • Select the appropriate componen t video signal dependin g on the TV or monito r you connect .
90 Audio Output Selecting the A udio Channel Y ou can select the channel for audio signal output from the CH1/CH2 and the (headphone) terminals. Repeate dly press the AUDI O OUTPUT CH button to change the audio channel.

92 Digital V ideo Control This feature enables the camcor der to contro l the recor d and stop functions of an external digital device connected to the camcor d er thr ough the HDV/DV terminal. Th e device must comply with the IEEE1394 A V/C protocol .
93 External Connections Recording an Exte rnal V ideo Signal (HDV/DV In, Analog Line-In) Y ou can recor d on the tape an external video signal, either f rom the HDV /DV input (SD or HD standar d) or f rom th e an al og v ide o i npu t (S D s tan dard) .
