12 PO WER SUPPL Y 入 切 O I WARNING – When leaving the sewing machine unattended or when it is not being used, turn off the main power switch of the machine or remove the plug from the wall outlet. CAUTION – Do not use this sewing machine with extension cords or multi-plug adaptors, otherwise a fire or an electric shock may occur.
13 USING THE SCREEN KEYS T ouch a ke y on the screen with your finger to select the patter n which appears inside the k ey or to star t the function or operation indicated inside the k ey .
14 HO W T O CHANGE LANGU A GE While touching a selection ke y , tur n the power off and then back on again. Example: To change the display language to Spanish 1. T ouch the “ ” key . 2. T ouch “ ESP A Ñ OL (SP ANISH) ” . This will change the language setting to Spanish.
15 How to c lear the language selection Example: To change the display language from Spanish back to English 1. T ouch the “ ENGLISH ” key . This will cancel the Spanish language setting. The display will then return to the screen which w as pre viously being display ed.
16 BOBBIN WINDING / BOBBIN THREAD SETTING Note: Always use bobbins that are especially made for this machine. Using bobbins not designed for this machine could result in bodily injury and/or damage to the machine. For sewing, use the plastic bobbin (X80309-001) for sewing.
17 3. Set the thread spool. The thread end should come from the bottom front of the spool. The spool cap closest to the thread spool size should be used to hold the spool securely on the spool pin. 1 Spool cap 2 Spool CAUTION If the spool is placed onto the pin in the wrong direction, the thread could entwine itself around spool pin.
18 2 1 5. Guide the thread through the small hole in the side of the bob- bin from the inside. Align the groov e in the bobbin with the spring on the shaft and place the bobbin on the bobbin winder shaft. While holding the thread end, push the bobbin winder shaft to the right.
19 Setting the bobbin 1. Slide open the bobbin cov er . 1 Bobbin co ver 2 Bobbin co ver release b utton 3. Guide the thread end through the slit, then pull the thread to- ward you to cut off an y excess thread. 1 Built-in thread cutter 1 2 2. Inser t the bobbin into the shuttle with the thread direction as noted in the diagram.
20 UPPER THREADING CAUTION Always make sure to thread the machine properly as shown in the directions. If the machine is not threaded properly, the thread could get stuck, needles could break and bodily injury could result. 1. Raise the presser f oot using the presser foot le ver .
21 4. Guide the thread as illustrated by the numbers and arrow marks on the machine. Threading is easy if you hold the thread gen- tly with your right hand while guiding the and of the thread with your left hand. 1 Run the thread all the w ay through the thread guides.
22 6. Run thread through the guide abov e the needle. HO W TO USE THE AUT OMA TIC NEEDLE THREADER CAUTION - Be careful not to turn the machine on while using the automatic needle threader. - Use the automatic needle threader with size #11-16 sewing machine needles.
23 1. Place the f abric under the presser foot, low er the presser foot, and then press the “ ST ART/ST OP ” b utton. The sewing ma- chine star ts sewing. * Adjust speed by sliding the speed control le ver . * Sewing contin ues at low speed while the button is pressed.
24 STITCH SELECTION (UTILITY STITCHES) Press the “ ” ke y and “ ” ke ys to get to the screen of the stitch y ou wish to use . Then press the desired stitch to select it. 1 Presser f oot symbol * Replace with the presser f oot with the letter indicated.
25 TRIAL SEWING 1. When the machine is turned on, the straight stitch (left) is al- wa ys selected. 2. P ass the thread under neath the presser f oot and pull it out from the rear of the machine by about 5 cm. 1 Upper thread 2 5 cm (13/64 ” ) * Sewing can begin without pulling out the bob bin thread.
26 4. Lower the presser f oot. Press the “ REVERSE STITCH ” button to sew a re v erse stitch, and then press the “ ST ART/ST OP ” button. The machine will star t sewing at slo w speed. * Sew re verse stitches at the beginning and end of stitches to reinf orce them.
27 STITCH WIDTH AND STITCH LENGTH Y our machine will automatically set stitch length and width when a stitch is selected. See the following instructions if you wish to fur ther adjust stitch length or width. The two arro w buttons ne xt to the stitch width mar k (top pair of arro ws) adjust stitch width.

31 CAUTION Always make sure to turn the machine off and unplug it when changing presser feet. If the power accidentally comes on, the machine might start running and bodily injury could result. 1. Push the “ NEEDLE POSITION ” button to raise the needle , and then turn off the power .

33 The feed dog adjustment le ver can be seen at the back of the sewing machine . Sliding the lev er to the left will lower the f eed dogs, f or example during button se wing. If you wish to continue se wing nor mally , slide the lev er to the right in order to raise the f eed dogs.
34 NEEDLE CAUTION – Always make sure to turn the machine off before changing needles. There is a danger of injury if the machine accidentally starts running during this operation. – Never use bent or damaged needles. If the needle breaks while sewing, the broken tip could fly away from the machine and cause injury.

This allo ws y ou to adjust the distance of the stitches from the edge of the f abric , while still allo wing y ou to r un the edge of the f oot along the edge of the f abric.

48 BUTT ONHOLE STITCHES A 1. Mar k the positions of the b uttonholes on the f abric. * The maxim um buttonhole length is 3 cm (1-3/16 ” ) (total of diameter + thic kness of b utton). Alw a ys mak e y our stitch samples out of scr aps from the f abr ic y ou will be using.
49 5. Press the “ ST AR T/ST OP ” b utton to star t the machine , while gently holding the end of the upper thread. * Gently, f eed the f abric b y hand. * The machine will stop with a reinf orcement stitch automati- cally after se wing is completed.
50 Se wing stretch fabrics ( ) 3 5 3 5 2. Lo w er the presser f oot and star t se wing. * Set the stitch width to match the diameter of the gimp thread. When se wing b uttonholes onto stretch f abr ic , inser t a gimp thread into the b uttonhole seam (b uttonholes only).

Star t the machine while holding the end of the upper thread gently . * The machine will se w a reinforcement stitch and stop au- tomatically after se wing is completed. 3 5 Thick fabrics If the zipper slide gets in the w a y , lo w er the needle all the w a y through the cloth, lift the f oot, and mo ve the slider out of the w a y .
53 APPLIQUES A Preparations: Attach the applique to the fabric. The applique should be at- tached with fabric glue or a basting stitch so that it will not move during sewing. 1 Applique 2 F abric glue 12 3 1 Applique 2 Zig zag 3 Fagoting 1. Attach presser foot “ J ” .
54 SCALLOP J 1. Attach the J foot. While sewing, tak e care to leav e a little space between the stitches and the edge of the f abric. Use to put a decorativ e trim on shir t collars and handkerchiefs. 2. Carefully cut along the outsides of the stitching, taking care not to cut the threads.

56 ZIPPER INSER TION (CENTERED AND SIDE APPLICA TION) I Preparations: Attach presser foot “ J ” and se w straight stitches up to the crotch end. 59 SMOCKING J Select a straight stitch with a stitch length of 4.0 mm Reduce thread tension and sew a f ew ro ws of stitches about one centimeter apar t. 1 About 1 cm (25/64 ” ) Use to add a decorativ e touch to gar ments. Pull the bottom of the threads to gather the cloth and iron gathers.
60 BUTT ON SEWING M 1. Raise the presser f oot lev er and slide the feed dog adjustment le ver to the right to lower the f eed dog. ( ) 1 F eed dog adjustment lev er Caution Before starting always turn the hand wheel to check to make sure the needle isn't hitting the button.
61 5. Once sewing is completed, return the feed dog to its original position, pull the bobbin thread at the sewing end do wn and pull the upper thread at the sewing end through to the re verse side of the f abr ic. Then tie the thread ends together and cut the threads at the sewing start.
62 BEFORE YOU BEGIN EMBR OIDERING J 1. Raise needle with the up-needle button. T ur n power off . 2. Loosen the screw on the f oot holder and remov e foot holder . 3. Attach the embroider y f oot. Screw bac k on tightly . 1 Screw * Make sure the needle clamp scre w is also tightened.
63 3. Attaching the embr oidery unit CAUTION Always make sure the power is off when attaching the embroidery unit or damage could result. 1. T ur n off se wing machine. 2. Slide accessor y case to the left and remo ve it. 3. Remov e cov er of the embroider y unit.
64 Removing embr oidery unit 1. Remov e embroider y hoop . Push “ ” ke y . Push “ ” ke y . The carr iage will mov e to the storage position. CAUTION – If the carriage is not in the storage position, you might not be able to put the cover on the embroidery unit.
65 CHOOSING EMBROIDER Y P A TTERNS (PART I) This computerized sewing machine comes with pre-prog rammed alphabet and patterns. Y ou may also use optional memor y cards f or more designs. 1. T ur n on the machine and touch the screen. Y ou should see the message displa yed in the diagram on y our screen.
66 One-point patterns 1. Push “ ” key . * If you are not at the screen sho wn in the diagram, simply push “ ” key to come to this screen. * 1 70 and 2 70 mean pattern number/total number of pat- terns *this shows the first and second patter ns out of a group of 70 to choose from.

68 Border s 1. Push “ ” key . * If you are not on the screen sho wn in the diagram, simply push “ ” key to come to this screen. Allows y ou to select a border patter n y ou like by choosing the shape of the border and stitch f or y our border .
69 Lettering Press “ ” key . * If you are not on the screen sho wn in the diagram, simply push “ ” key to come to this screen. Example: For practice, try the word "BUS": 1. Press " " ke y . The letter “ B ” should appear at the top of your screen as sho wn in the diagram.
70 Numerals and punctuation Pushing the “ ” key will tak e you to the Punctuation and Number screens. Lower and upper case letter s The “ ” ke y button allows y ou to alter nate between upper and lower case lettering.
71 Selecting patterns fr om a memor y card 1. T ur n off the po wer . 2. Inser t the memor y card y ou wish to use into the card slot, which is located on the right side of the sewing machine . The arrow on card should be f acing you and pointing to the left, into the machine.
72 CHOOSING EMBROIDER Y PA TTERNS (PAR T II) If y ou accidentally choose the wr ong design 1. Press the “ ” k ey to go bac k to the previous screen. If y ou choose the wrong c haracter Press “ ” k ey . Each time y ou press delete it will delete the last character on the top of the screen.
73 T o make wor ds Example: For practice, try entering the characters "ABCDEFGH" 1. Press “ ” ke y . The letters will scroll across your screen to the left star ting with the first letter selected. * The screen only scrolls if the letters will not all fit in the screen.
74 EMBROIDERING Embroidering attractive finishes Stabilizers – Use stabilizers to create beautiful embroider without puc k- ering or poor stitch conformation. Iron-on Stabilizers are recommended especially for lightw eight fabrics and/or stretchable f abrics.
75 Setting the fabric into the embroidery frame 1. Mark the fabric using a chalk pen or fabric marking pen to indicate the embroidering position. 2. Loosen the adjusting screw and separate the inner and outer frames .
76 5. Press down into the outer frame so that the mark doesn ’ t mo ve out of place. 1 Outer frame 2 Inner frame 3 Surf ace of fabric 6. Remov e the embroider y sheet before starting to embroider . 1 Finger hole f or removing grid 1 2 3 * Press down firmly until the outer frame and inner frame are at the same height.
77 Fitting the embr oidery frame to the embroidery unit 5 3 1 2 1. Raise the presser f oot to its highest position. Then pass the embroidery frame under the presser foot with the mounting brack et on the left side and the fabric r ight side up .
78 Embroidering CAUTION – When sewing embroidery, Brother embroidering thread (X81164-001) must be used for the bobbin thread. – Check bobbin thread before beginning to sew. If you embroider when the bobbin thread is low, the thread could tangle up or other problems could result.
79 5. Change the thread to the ne xt color and star t sewing again. The machine will continue to stop f or thread changes. 6. Continue changing threads and star ting the machine through the third and fourth colors. After it has sewn the f our th and last color , it will stop automatically .
80 THREAD TENSION Set thread tension according to the f abric you are using with the tension dial. 6 5 4 When doing machine embroidery , the tension dial should be set some where between 2-6.
81 CHECKING THREAD COLORS AND TIME REQUIRED Chec king thread colors Press “ ” k ey . Colored sections will move one after another to the left, from the first colored section to be stitched to last. * A utomatically scrolls at a rate of one screen per .
82 Chec king time required to complete a pattern Press “ ” key . The amount of time required for the pattern will be calculated and display ed on the screen.
83 CHOOSING EMBROIDER Y PLA CEMENT 1. Press “ ” k ey to go to the edit screen. * Y ou cannot choose or delete patter ns from the “ ” ke y screen. If you wish to do so , press to go back to the previous screen. 2. Press “ ” key . Press the directional arrows to set needle work placement.
84 Mo ving the embroidery location Use directional arrows to change the placement of pattern on the fabric. CAUTION Do not lower the needle while the hoop is in motion. Doing so could cause broken needles and possible injury. Chec king the embroidering area Press “ ” key to mo ve the hoop so y ou can check your work.
85 Embroidering fr om a specific starting point 1. Mark the point to begin embroider ing as shown in the dia- gram. 2. Press “ ” ke y . The embroidery hoop will mov e to place the needle abov e the lower left corner of the patter n. 3. Use the directional arrows to match the f oot up with the mark where you wish y our design to be placed.
86 RO T A TING AND MIRR ORING P A TTERNS Rotating patterns 1. Press “ ” key . Each time you press it, your design will rotate in 90 ° increments to the right. The arrow indicates di- rection. CAUTION When rotating the pattern, make sure you are using a hoop that can do this.
87 CHANGING SIZE AND STITCH DENSITY OF CHARA CTERS AND BORDERS T o change size 1. Press “ ” ke y to go to the edit screen. * Y ou cannot select or delete a patter n from the “ ” ke y screen. If you wish to do so , push “ ” ke y to return to the previous screen.
88 T o change stitch density (limited to certain alphabets and borders) 1. Press “ ” k ey , then press “ ” key . 2. Press “ ” k ey f or a finer stitch density , or “ ” ke y for a coarser stitch density . <Fine density> <Normal density> <Coarse density> * Press “ ” ke y to retur n to normal stitch density .
89 IF THE THREAD BREAKS DURING EMBR OIDER Y If the upper thread breaks 1. Stop the machine, r aise the needle and foot, and rethread the machine. · If the bobbin thread breaks 1 Cut the upper thread, raise needle and f oot, and re- mo ve hoop . 2 Reset the bobbin thread, then reattach hoop .
90 5. Lower the presser f oot and push “ ST ART/ST OP ” button. · The machine might not star t sewing right a way after press- ing “ ” ke y or “ ” key . This is nothing to be alarmed about. Just push “ ST ART/ST OP ” button again. When starting over from the beginning 1.
91 EMBROIDER Y APPLICA TIONS Combining character s to form w ords 1. Enter "ABC", press “ ” k ey , and then press “ ” key . 2. Press “ ” key to mo ve the position of the needle ov er the fabric from the center to the lo wer left cor ner .
