1 Using This Manual Thank you for purchasing a Brother Multi-function center (MFC). This machine has been designed to be simple to use, with LCD screen prompts to guide you through functions. Ho we ver , you can use your machine to its fullest potential by taking a fe w minutes to read this manual.

3 INTR ODUCTION Fax T ones and Handshake When someone is sending a fax, the f ax machine sends fax calling tones, (CNG tones)—soft, intermittent beeps at 4-second intervals. Y ou’ll hear them when you dial and press Start , and they continue for about 40 seconds after dialling.

10 CHAPTER TWO Choosing a Location Place your machine on a flat, stable surface, such as a desk. Select a place that is free of vibration and shocks. Locate the machine near a telephone wall socket and a standard earthed electrical sock et. A void placing your machine wher e it may be knocked.

14 CHAPTER TWO Setting Up the machine Follo w the instructions below to connect the handset (F or MFC-9550 only), po wer cord, and telephone line. LINE EXT. * * 1 Connecting the Handset. (For MFC-9550 only) Connect the curled handset cord to the bottom of the handset and to the left side of the machine.
15 INST ALLA TION IMPORT ANT : If you need to remo ve the moulded mains plug in order to fit an appropriate type, you m ust discard the moulded plug immediately having cut it off , in or der that it is not inadvertently inserted into a live socket, thus presenting a shock hazar d.
16 CHAPTER TWO 3 Connect one end of the telephone line cord to the socket marked LINE on the left side of the machine. Connect the other end to the modular wall sock et. 4 Attach the wire extensions to the Multi-pur pose sheet feeder , and to the document guide base.
17 INST ALLA TION Loading P aper 1 Open the Multi-purpose sheet feeder cov er . 2 Fan the paper well. Load the paper , making sur e that the printing surface is to wards the fax unit and the paper le vel is stack ed belo w the triangle mark. The feeder can hold up to 200 sheets of 80gsm paper , or up to 10 en velopes.
18 CHAPTER TWO Attaching Dust Co ver ■ It is essential to keep the dust cov er on your machine to pre vent dust from entering the print mechanism. ■ Using the dust cov er on your machine will prolong the life of the drum unit.
19 INST ALLA TION Multi-Line Connections (P ABXs) Most of fices use a central telephone system, or P ABX. The machine will work with most P ABX or key systems that allo w a two-wire analogue connection. Ho we ver , we recommend that you ha ve a separate tele phone line for your machine.
20 CHAPTER TWO Using Extension T elephones It may be that your premises are already wired with parallel e xtension telephones, or you intend to add extension telephones to your line, in addition to your machine.
21 INST ALLA TION Connecting an External T elephone Answering De vice (T AD) Sequence Y ou might choose to connect an additional answering machine. When you hav e an external T AD on the same telephone line as the machine, the T AD answers all calls. The machine “listens” for fax calling (CNG) tones.
22 CHAPTER TWO Outgoing Message (OGM) of External T AD T iming is important in recording this message. The message sets up the ways to handle both manual and automatic fax reception. 1 W e recommend the outgoing message (OGM) is no longer than 20 seconds.
23 User -Friendly Pr ogramming W e hav e designed your machine with on-screen programming and a Help ke y . User-friendly programming helps you take full adv antage of all the functions your machine has to of fer . Since your programming is done on the LCD, we have created step-by- step on-screen prompts to help you program your machine.

4 CHAPTER FOUR Initial Setup 29 Getting Star ted Setting the Dialling Mode (T one/Pulse) Y our machine is initially set to T ONE . If you are using a PULSE dial line, you can change the setting to PULSE by following the ste ps below . 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Men u , 1 , 1 .
30 CHAPTER FOUR Setting the Date and Time Y our machine displays the date and time, and prints it on e very fax y ou send. In the e vent of a po wer failure, the machine maintains date and time information for about 15 hours (MFC-9550) or about 12 hours (MFC- 9050).
31 INITIAL SETUP - The “+” (plus) character - Y our Country Code (e.g . “44” for the United Kingdom, “41” for Switzerland) - Y our local area code minus any leading “0” (“9” in Spain) - A space - Y our number on the local exchange, using spaces to aid readability as appropriate.
32 CHAPTER FOUR ■ T o enter a space, press once betw een numbers and twice between characters. ■ If your Station ID has already been programmed, the screen prompts “1” to make a change, or “2” to exit without c hang ing.

34 CHAPTER FOUR Y ou can program an R ke ypress as part of a number stored in a One T ouch or Speed Dial location. When programming the One T ouch or Speed Dial number (Function menu 6-1 or 6-2) press R f irst (the screen displays “ ! ”), then enter the telephone number .
35 INITIAL SETUP Setting the Speaker V olume Y ou can adjust the speaker volume when your machine has dialled (onhook dialling) and the line is connected. Y ou can turn the volume OFF or you can select a v olume le vel. Press or to adjust the volume le vel.

37 Basic Receiving Operations Select Ans wer Mode If you hav e the model MFC-9050 , you’ll need to connect an external telephone if you wish to use the Fax/T el ( F/T ) or Manual Mode. Answer Mode For ( means light off . means light on.) 1. Manual Y ou must answer all calls yourself.
38 CHAPTER FIVE 4. TA D This is the only setting in which you can use an external answ ering machine. Y our telephone answering de vice is connected to your machine, and answers e very call. Once the external telephone answering de vice (T AD) answers, the machine listens for fax tones.
39 SETUP RECEIVE Setting the Ring Dela y The Ring Delay setting determines the number of times the machine rings before it answers. 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 2 , 1 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 2 , 1 . If you hav e a MFC-9050, go to Ste p 4.
40 CHAPTER FIVE Even if the caller hangs up during the F/T pseudo-ringing, the machine continues the F/T pseudo-ringing for the set time. Please note that some faxes cannot be recei ved automatically in Fax/T el ( F/T ) Mode, because some fax machines do not send the standard Group 3 calling tone (“CNG”).
41 SETUP RECEIVE F ax Detect When you use this feature, you don’t ha ve to press Start when you answer a fax call and hear calling bee ps. Just hold the handset and wait for se veral seconds.
42 CHAPTER FIVE If you recei ve fax es that are split on two pages, change the reduction to AU T O –– OR –– choose a lo wer reduction percentage. NO TE: ■ When you use Auto Reduction to reduce incoming documents to fit on one page of recording pa per , you can do so only as long as the original document is not longer than 35 cm.
43 SETUP RECEIVE Setting the Print Density If your machine is printing too light or too dark, you can adjust the print density le vel. The new setting will remain until you change it again. 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 2 , 7 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 2 , 7 .
44 CHAPTER FIVE Ad vanced Receiving Operations Operation fr om an External or Extension T elephone An external phone is a telephone that is plugged into your machine (either into the machine’ s EXT socket or into the back of the connector that plugs into the telephone wall socket).
45 SETUP RECEIVE If you’ re at an extension phone, you’ll need to lift the handset during the F/T Ring T ime and press # 5 1 between the F/T pseudo-rings. If no one is on the line, or if someone wants to send you a fax, send the call back to the machine by pressing 5 1 .
46 CHAPTER FIVE Caller ID (Caller IDentification) (Only f or the U.K.) Caller ID is a telephone service that allo ws the subscriber to see a display of the caller’ s phone number as the telephone rings.
47 SETUP RECEIVE How Does the Caller ID W ork? The Caller ID Appear s on the Displa y When Y our T elephone Rings As your telephone rings, the display sho ws you the caller’ s phone number . Once you pic k up the handset, the caller’ s ID disappears.
48 CHAPTER FIVE 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 0 , 2 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 0 , 2 . CALLER ID:ON SELECT { } & SET 2 Press or to select DISPLA Y ID . 3 Press Set . The caller ID of the last call will appear on the display . If no ID is stored, the beeper will sound and “ NO CALLER ID ” will appear on the display .
49 SETUP RECEIVE T o Activate Certain Network Services When Using Call Reply It may be desired (in order to acti vate certain network services), to insert a special pref ix to be dialled in front of the Caller ID number when using the Call Reply feature.
50 CHAPTER FIVE Clearing the Caller ID Stored in Memory For the ef fectiv e use of the memory , it is recommended that you should clear the Caller ID stored into memory by pressing Clear when the display sho ws the number . Printing Caller ID List 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 0 , 2 .
51 SETUP RECEIVE Setup f or Polling Receive Polling Recei ve is when y ou call another fax machine to recei ve a f ax from it. 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 2 , 8 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 2 , 8 . The screen displays POLLING:STANDARD SELECT { } & SET 2 Press or to choose ST AND ARD .
52 CHAPTER FIVE 5 Press Set . The screen prompts you to enter the fax number y ou want to poll, and then to press Start . ENTER FAX NO. THEN PRESS START 6 Press Start . Setup Dela yed P olling Receive Y ou can set your machine to be gin Polling Receiv e at a later time.
53 SETUP RECEIVE Sequential P olling Y our machine can request documents from sever al fax units in a single operation. Y ou just specify sev eral destinations in Step 6. After this operation, a Sequential Polling Report will be printed. 1 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 2 , 8 .
54 CHAPTER FIVE Setting PC Interface Mode (Only f or MFC-9550) If you connect your machine to your PC, you can recei ve fax es into your PC. After completing all setup for Multi-Function Link Pro for Fax, you can select PC Interface Mode ( ON / OFF ) for routing incoming f axes.
Bef ore Y ou Begin ■ Documents must be between 14.8 and 21.6 cm wide, and 15 and 60 cm long. This machine can only scan an image 20.8 cm wide, regar dless of ho w wide the document is. ■ Make sure you insert documents face do wn , top edge fir st .
56 CHAPTER SIX ■ DO NOT use curled, wrinkled, folded, or ripped document, or documents with staples, paper clips, paste or tape attached. DO NOT use cardboard, ne wspaper , or fabric. ■ Make sure documents written with ink, tippe x/liquid paper are completely dry .
57 SETUP SEND A utomatic T ransmission This is the easiest way to send a fax. IMPOR T ANT : Do not pick up the handset. 1 Insert the document face do wn in the feeder . 2 Enter the fax number using One T ouc h, Speed Dial, T el-Index or the dial pad. 3 Press Start .
58 CHAPTER SIX Fax Redial If you’ re sending a fax manually and the line is busy , you can retry the number by pressing Redial/P ause . 1 Press Redial/P ause .
59 SETUP SEND 2 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 3 , 9 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 3 , 9 . The screen displays 9.REAL TIME TX 3 Press Set . 4 T o change the default setting, press or to select ON ( or OFF) and go to Step 7. –– OR –– For the ne xt fax transmission only , press or to select NEXT FA X ONL Y .
60 CHAPTER SIX Basic Sending Operations Composing an Electr onic Cover P age The cov er page is sent to the receiving party’ s machine. Y our cover page includes the name stored in the One T ouch or Speed Dial memory , if you hav e used this featur e to start the call.

62 CHAPTER SIX Always Send Cover Page Make sure Station ID is set up (chap. 4). This feature does not work without the Station ID. Y ou can set the machine to send a cov er page whenever you send a f ax. The number of pages in your fax is not included when you use this setting.
63 SETUP SEND 5 Press Set when the screen displays your selection. The screen displays ACCEPTED NEXT 1.YES 2.NO 6 Press 1 if you want to select additional settings. The display returns to the SETUP SEND menu. –– OR –– Press 2 to exit if you have finished choosing settings.
64 CHAPTER SIX Composing Y our Own Comments 1 For the MFC-9050, Pr ess Menu , 3 , 2 . For the MFC-9550, Pr ess Menu , 1 , 3 , 2 . The screen displays 2.COVERPAGE NOTE 2 Use or to choose position 5 or 6 for your customized comment. 3 Press Set . 4 Use the dial pad to enter your customized comment.
65 SETUP SEND 4 Press Set when the screen displays your selection. The screen displays ACCEPTED NEXT 1.YES 2.NO 5 Press 1 if you want to select additional settings. T he display returns to the SETUP SEND menu. –– OR –– Press 2 if you have finished choosing settings and go to Step 6.
66 CHAPTER SIX 4 If you set Call Reserv ation to ON , press Set when the screen displays your selection. The screen displays the current setting for Call Back Message. CALL MESSAGE:OFF CALL MESSAGE:ON 5 Press or to select ON (or OFF ). 6 Press Set when the screen displays your selection.
67 SETUP SEND Dela yed T ransmission (Timer) Y ou can use this function to send a fax up to 24 hours later . 1 Insert the document in the feeder . 2 For the MFC-9050, Press Menu , 3 , 7 . For the MFC-9550, Press Menu , 1 , 3 , 7 . 3 Enter the time you want the fax to be sent, in 24-hour format (for example, enter 19:45 for 7:45 PM).
68 CHAPTER SIX Br oadcasting Broadcasting is automatically sending the same fax message to multiple fax numbers. Using the Help/Br oadcast key , you can include up to 24 One T ouch locations, up to 10.
69 SETUP SEND ■ If the memory is full, press Stop to abort the job or press Start to send the portion that is in the memory (if more than one page has been scanned). Multiple Resolution T ransmission Use this feature to select separate resolution settings for each page of the fax you’ re sending.
70 CHAPTER SIX 3 The screen displays POLLING:STANDARD SELECT { } & SET 4 Press or to choose ST AND ARD . 5 Press Set . The screen displays 1.DOC 2.MEMORY 6 Press 1 to select DOC if you want your machine to scan the printed document at the time it is polled.
71 SETUP SEND 3 The screen displays POLLING:STANDARD SELECT { } & SET 4 Press or to choose SECURE , and press Set . 5 Enter a four-digit number , and press Set . 1.DOC 2.MEMORY 6 Press 1 to select DOC if you want your machine to scan the printed document at the it is polled.
72 CHAPTER SIX 2 If you hav e more than two jobs waiting, use or to select the job you want to cancel. Press Set when the screen displays your selection. — OR — If you have only one job waiting, go to step 3. #02 SALES REPORT 1.CLEAR 2.QUIT 3 Press 1 to cancel — OR — Press 2 to exit without cancelling.
73 Storing Numbers for Easy Dialling Y ou can set up your machine to do three types of easy dialling: One T ouch, Speed Dial and Groups for Broadcasting of faxes. Storing One T ouc h Dial Number s Y ou can store 24 fax/phone numbers that y ou can dial by pressing one ke y .
74 CHAPTER SEVEN 6 Press Set . The screen prompts you to select the type of number this is. Use or to select the type you want. FA X a fax number TEL a telephone (voice) number F/T both a fax and telephone (v oice) number 7 Press Set . 8 Return to Step 2 to store another One T ouch Dial number .
75 SETUP QUICK-DIAL NUMBERS 7 Press Set . 8 The screen prompts you to select the type of number this is. Use or to select the type you want. FA X a fax number TEL a telephone (voice) number F/T both a fax and telephone number 9 Press Set . 10 Return to Step 2 to store another Speed Dial number .
76 CHAPTER SEVEN Y ou can include up to 24 One T ouch locations, or up to 100 Speed Dial locations. If you broadcast to more than the maximum locations a vailable, you will be unable to set up transmissions using Dual Access and the T imer . 1 For the MFC-9050, press Menu , 6 , 3 .
Making V oice Calls Y ou can use your machine to make v oice telephone calls, by dialling manually or by using One T ouch or Speed Dial memory . USING THE UNIT WITH AN EXT . TEL (Only f or MFC-9050) If you connect an external telephone to the unit, your fax machine can be used to make normal telephone calls.
78 CHAPTER EIGHT Speed Dialling 1 Pick up the handset. 2 When you hear a dial tone, press Speed Dial , then press the two- digit Speed Dial number . 3 T o hang up, replace the handset. If you are sending a fax, press Start after pressing the Speed Dial number .
79 TELEPHONE (V OICE) OPERA TION Sear ching T elephone Index Y ou can search for names you hav e stored in One T ouch and Speed Dial memories. Names are stored alphabetically . 1 Press T el-Index , then enter the first letter of the name you’ re looking for .
80 CHAPTER EIGHT Call Reservation with an External T elephone (Only for MFC-9050) If you connect an external telephone to the unit, you can send a fax and then talk to the recipient using the Call Reserv ation feature.
81 This chapter is for Model MFC-9050. If you have model MFC-9550 your remote fax options are handled by the Message Manager . Please see chapter 10, “Message Manager”. Fax Forwarding Y ou cannot use Fax F orwarding when “Fax Storage” is set to OFF .
82 CHAPTER NINE See “Printing a Fax from Memory (Only for MFC-9050)” chap. 5 Y ou can also dial into your machine from a remote location to switch this feature on, or to change the number you want your faxes forwarding to.
83 REMO TE F AX OPTIONS (ONL Y FOR MFC-9050) 2 Enter a three-digit number from 000 to 998. The cannot be changed. Do not use the same digits that appear in your Remote Activation or Deactivation Code.
84 CHAPTER NINE Change Fax Forwarding Setting Press 9 5 then to T urn F ax F orwarding OFF ––Press 1 . T urn F ax F orwarding ON ––Press 2 . Program F ax Forward Number ––Press 4 . Automatically , the machine will turn Fax F orwarding ON .
85 REMO TE F AX OPTIONS (ONL Y FOR MFC-9050) Retrieving the Memory Status List Y ou can retriev e the Memory Status List from a remote fax machine to see if you hav e any fax messages. 1 Dial your fax machine’ s number . 2 When you hear the beep, immediately enter your Remote Access Code (The factory setting is 1 5 9 ).
