General i nformat ion 9 1 Bas ic Oper ati ons 1 To operate the Touch s creen use your finger to press the Menu or mode but ton directly on the LCD screen. To display and acc ess al l the screen menus or options in a setting, press a b or d c to scroll t hrough th em.
10 2 Loading pape r and print medi a 2 The m achine can feed paper from the standard paper tray, optional lower tray or multi-purpose t r ay. When y ou put pape r into the p aper tray, note the following: If your a pplication s oftware suppo r ts paper size selection on the print menu, you can select it through the software.
Loadi ng paper 11 2 Note For Legal or Folio size paper, press the release button (1) in the bottom of the paper tra y and then pull out t he back of the paper tra y. (Legal and Folio size p aper are not available in some regions.) c Fan the stack o f paper well to a v oid paper jam s and m isfeeds.
Chapter 2 12 f Lift up t he suppo r t flap (1) t o prevent paper from sliding off the f ace-down output tray, or remove each page as soon a s it comes out of t he m achine. Load ing pape r in the mult i-p urp ose t ray (M P tr ay) 2 You can load up to 3 envelopes or special print media in the MP t ray or up to 5 0 sheets of plain pa per.
Loadi ng paper 13 2 b Pull out the MP t ray support (1) and unfold the flap (2). c Put paper in the MP tray and make sure: The paper stays under t he maximum paper mark (1). The side to be printed on mus t be fa ce up with the leading edge (to p of the p aper) in first.
Chapter 2 14 Printing on t hi c k pa per, la bels and envelopes f rom t he MP tray 2 Before l oading, press the co rners and s ides of the envelopes t o make them as flat as possible. a Open the back cover (face-up output tra y) . b Open the MP tray and lower it gently.

The se areas may vary depending on the paper s ize or settings in the application you are using. Note When us ing B R-Script3 emu lation, the unprintable area around the edges of the paper is 0.

When y ou choose Tray#1 Only , MP Only or Tray#2 Only 1 , t he mac hine pul ls the paper onl y from that tra y . If the s elected tray is out of pa per, No Paper will appear on t he LCD.

Chapter 2 20 Acceptabl e paper and other print media 2 Print qu ality may v ary ac c ord ing to the t ype of paper you are using. You can use the followin g types o f print media : pl ain paper, thin paper, thick paper, thicker pa per, bond pap er, recycl ed paper, labels o r envelopes .

Chapter 2 22 Hand ling an d us ing spe cial pape r 2 The machine is designed to work well with most types of xerogra phic a nd bond paper. Howeve r , some paper variables may have an effect on print quality or handling reliability. Always test sample s of paper be fore purchasin g to ensu r e des irable perform ance.
Loadi ng paper 23 2 Envelopes 2 Most envelopes designed f or laser printers will be suit able for your machi ne. However, some envelop es may h ave feed and print - quality prob lems bec ause of the way they have been m ade. A suitable envelope shoul d have edges with straight , we ll -creased folds.
Chapter 2 24 Labels 2 The ma chine will print on most t ypes of labels designed for u se w it h a las er machine. Labels should hav e an adhesive t hat is acrylic-based since this material is more stable at the h igh temperatu r es in the fuser unit.
25 3 3 How to load documents 3 You can send a fax, mak e c opies, and scan from the ADF (A utom atic Document F eeder) and the scanner glass . Us ing th e aut oma tic do cume nt f eeder (AD F) 3 The A DF can hold up t o 50 pa ges and fe eds each sheet indi vi duall y.
Chapter 3 26 d Adjust the p aper g uides (1) to f it the width of your documen t. Note To scan non-standard doc uments, see Using t he scanner g lass uu page 26. Us ing t he sc an ner glass 3 You can use t he scanner glass to fax, copy or scan pages of a book, one page at a time.
27 4 4 How to se nd a fax 4 The following st eps show you how to send a fax. To send multiple pag es use the AD F. a When you want to send a fa x , or change fax send or recei ve settings, pres s the Fax button on the Touchscreen.
Chapter 4 28 d Choose one of the options below: If you want to send a single-sided document , go t o step e . If you want to send a 2-sided document , choose the duplex scanning format for your 2-si d ed document . Pre ss Duplex Fax and c hoose DuplexScan : LongEdge or DuplexScan : ShortEdge .

Receivi ng a fax 33 5 Using recei ve modes 5 Some rec eive modes answer automatically ( Fax Only and Fax/Tel ). Y ou may want to chan ge the Ri ng Delay before using these mode s. (See Ring Delay uu page 34.) Fax Only 5 Fax Only mode will aut omatica lly answer every call as a fax.
Chapter 5 34 Rece ive Mod e settings 5 Ring Delay 5 The R ing Delay setting s et s the numb er of times t he machi ne rings b efore it a nswers in Fax Only and Fax/Tel modes. If yo u have external or ex tension te lephones on t he same line as the mac hine, keep the Ring De lay setting of 4 .
Receivi ng a fax 35 5 Ea sy Receiv e 5 If Eas y Receiv e is On : 5 The m achine can rece ive a fax automatical ly, even if you an swer t he call. W hen yo u see Receiving on the LCD or hear a c lick on t he phone line through the h andset you are using, just replace the handse t.
36 6 How to use PC-FAX 6 PC -Fax Rec eive (F or Wind ows ® on ly) 6 If you turn on t he PC-Fa x Receive featu r e you r ma ch ine will sto re re ceiv ed f axe s in mem ory and send them t o your P C autom atically. You can the n use your PC to view and store these faxes.
Using PC-FAX 37 6 PC-FAX S end 6 The Brother P C-FAX feat ure lets you u se your PC to send a documen t f rom an application as a standard fax. You can send a file created in any application on your PC as a P C-FAX.
38 7 Tel ephone lin e serv ices 7 Vo ice Ma il 7 If you have Voice Mail on the same telephone line as your B rother mac hine, Voice Ma il and th e Broth er ma chin e will c onflic t with e ach other when receiving incoming calls.
Telep hone servi ces an d external device s 39 7 Di sti nctiv e Ring 7 Distinctive Ring is a funct ion of your Brother machin e that allows a person with one l ine to receive fax an d voice call s t hrough two different p hone numbers on that on e line.
Chapter 7 40 Before you choose the ring pattern to registe r 7 You can only register one Distinctive Ring pattern with the machine. Some ring patterns canno t be registered. T he ring pattern s belo w are supported by your Brother machine. Register the one y our telephon e company gives you.

Chapter 7 42 Co nnec ti ons 7 The e xternal TAD must be plugged i nto the back of the machine, into the jack labeled EXT. Your mach ine cannot work correctly if you p lug the TAD into a wall jack (unl es s y o u are using Distinctive Ring).
Telep hone servi ces an d external device s 43 7 Externa l and exte nsion telephone s 7 Conn ectin g an ex tern al or ext ensio n te lepho ne 7 You can connec t a separate tel e phone directly to your machine as shown in the diagram below. Connec t the t elephone line cord to the jack labeled EXT.
Chapter 7 44 Using a n on-Brothe r cordles s ext erna l hand set 7 If your non-Brother cordless telephone is conne c ted to the EXT . jack o f the m achine (see page 43) and you typically carry the cordless handset e lsewhere, it is e asier to answer calls during the Ring Delay.

Y ou can change t he default s ettings. 1 You can choose the file type from the pull-down list. 2 You can enter the file name you want to use for the docum ent. 3 You can save the file to the default f older, or c hoose your preferred folder by clicking the ( Bro wse ) button.

68 Replacing t he toner cartridge A a Leave the machine turned on for 10 m in ute s fo r th e in te rna l fan to c oo l the extremely hot parts inside the machine. b Press t he f ront cover release bu tton and then op en the f ron t cover. c Take out the drum unit and t o ner cartridge assem bly.
Routine maint enance 69 A Important • W e rec ommend th at you pl ace the drum unit and toner cartridge assem bly on a clean, flat surface wi th a piece of dispos able paper underneath it in case you accide ntally spi ll or scatt er toner.
70 Important • Han dle the toner cartridge carefully. I f toner scatters on your hands or clothes, immedia tel y wipe or was h it off with cold water. • T o avoid p rint quality problems, DO NOT touch the shade d parts s hown i n the illu strat ion s.
Routine maint enance 71 A Important • W ait to unpack the new t o ner cartridge unti l immediately before y ou put it i n the machin e. If a toner cart ridge is left unpac ked for a long t ime, the toner life will be s hortened. • If an unpa c ked drum unit is put i n direct sun li ght or room light, the unit may be dama ged.
72 g Put the new toner cartridge firmly in to the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put it in correctly, the green lock le ver on t he dru m unit w ill lift automatical ly. Note Make sure t hat you put in the toner cartridge correctly or it may s eparate from the drum unit.
Routine maint enance 73 A j Close the front cover of the machin e. Note Afte r you replace a toner cart ridge, DO NOT turn off t he machine's power switc h or open t he front c o v er until the LCD clears the Pl ease Wait mes s age and returns to Ready mode.
74 c Take out the drum unit and t o ner cartridge assem bly. WARNING HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machi ne, some int ernal p arts of the mac hin e will be extremely h ot. Wait for t he machine to cool down before you touch the internal part s of the machine.
Routine maint enance 75 A d Clean the corona wire inside the drum unit by gently sliding t he green tab from left to right an d right to left several t imes. Note Be sure to return the tab to the home pos it ion ( a ) (1). I f you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
76 Repl ace Pa rts Drum Unit A The d rum unit has exceed ed its rated life. Please replac e the drum unit with a new one. We rec ommend a genuine B rother drum unit be installed at this time. After replacemen t, reset the drum counter by following the instructions included with the new drum unit.
Routine maint enance 77 A c Take out the drum u nit and toner cartri d ge assembly. WARNING HOT SURFACE After you have just used the m ac hine, s ome internal parts of the mac hine wi ll be extremely hot. Wait for t he machine t o cool down bef ore you tou c h t he in ternal parts of th e m ac hin e .
78 WARNING • DO NOT put a toner cartridge or a toner cartridge and drum unit ass embl y into a fire. It coul d explode, res ulting in injuri es. • DO NOT use flammab le substances, any type of spray, or a n organic solvent/liquid containin g al cohol or ammonia to clean the inside or outside of the p roduct.
