Chapter 1 4 Sleep T ime 1 The S leep mode set ting ca n reduce power consum ption. W hen the mac hine is in S leep mode (Power S ave mode) it acts as though it is turn ed off. The machine will wak e up an d start printing when it receive s a pri nt job.

Chapter 2 8 Set tin g an d chan gi ng t he Ad m ini st ra to r Pa ss wo rd 2 Setti ng up the pa s sword 2 The pa ssword y ou set i n these st eps is for the admin istrator. This password is us ed to set up us ers a nd to turn the Secure F unction Lock on or off.
Securi t y f eatures 9 2 Se tti ng up an d c han gin g th e Pu bl ic us er mod e 2 Publ ic user mode restricts the functions that are available for Publi c users. Public us ers do not need to enter a password to access the features made a vailable through this se tting.

Chapter 2 12 Switching Us e rs 2 This setting allows you to switch between registered restricted users or Public mode when Secure Function Lock is turned on. Chang ing to t h e restricted us er mode a Pre ss Public or x xxxx (where xx xxx is the user’s name).
Securi t y f eatures 13 2 Setting Lock 2 Setting Lock lets you set a pass word to stop other people from accidentally changing your machin e setti ngs. Make a careful not e of your pas sword. If you forget it, you will have to reset the password s stored in the machine.

Sending a fa x 29 3 Polling ove rview 3 Pol ling lets you set up your machine s o other people can rec eive faxes from you, but they pay for the call . It also l ets you call somebody else’s f ax machine a nd receive a fax fr om it, so you pay for the call.
30 4 Remote Fa x Options 4 Remote Fax Optio ns let you recei ve faxes while you are away from the machine. You can use only one R em o te Fa x O p ti on at a time. Fax F orwar ding 4 The F ax F orwarding feat ure lets you automat ically f orwa r d your received faxes to another mac hine.
Receivi ng a fax 31 4 Pagi ng 4 W hen Paging is chosen, the machine dials the cell phone or pager number you pro grammed. This activates your cell phone o r pager s o you will kno w that you have a fax mess age in t h e machin e’s memory. a Pr ess Menu .
Chapter 4 32 Fax St orag e 4 The F ax St orage fe ature lets you st ore your received faxes in the machin e’s memo ry. You can retrieve stored fax message s fr o m a fax machine a t another loc ation using the remot e retrieval command s. (See Retr ievi ng fax mess ages uu page 34.
Receivi ng a fax 33 4 Important If y ou c hoose Ba ckup P rint On, the machine will also print re ceived faxes at you r machine so you will have a copy. This is a safety feature in case there is a power f ailure before the fax is forwarded or a problem at the receiving mach ine.

62 A Cleaning an d chec king the machine A Clean t he out side and inside of the mac hine regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace t he ton er cartridge or the drum un it, make sure t hat you clean the ins ide of t he machine. If p rinted pages are s tained with toner, clea n the inside of the machine with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Routine maintenanc e 67 A Cl eanin g the d rum u nit A If your printout has black or white dots or other repeating mark s at 3. 7 in. (94 mm) intervals, the drum may have foreign mat erial, s uch as glue fr o m a label stuck on the drum surface. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.
68 WARNING HOT SURFACE After you have just used the machi ne, some int erna l parts of th e mac hi ne will b e extremely h ot. Wait f or the mac hine to c ool down before you touch the internal parts of the machine.
Routine maintenanc e 69 A j Push down the green lock lever and take the toner cartridge o ut of t he drum unit. k Turn the drum unit as shown in the illustration. Make sure that the drum unit gear (1) is on the le ft hand side. l Use the numbered markers next to the drum roller t o find the m ark .
70 m Turn the drum unit gear toward you by hand while checking the surface of the suspected area. n When you have found the mark on the drum that matches the drum dot check sheet, wipe the surf ace of the drum gently with a cotton swab until the mark on the surface c omes off .

Clea ning t he pa per pick -up roll ers A Cleaning the paper pick -up roller pe riodically may prev ent paper jams by i nsuring the proper f eeding o f paper.

74 Replacing periodic maintena nce parts A The periodic maintenanc e parts will n eed to be replaced regularly to maintain the print quality. The parts listed below will have to be replaced a fter printing a pproxim ately 50 ,000 pages 1 for P F K it MP and 100 ,000 pa ges 1 for PF Kit 1, PF K it 2, Fuser and Laser.

Options 79 B Optional paper tray (LT-5400) B An o ptional lower tray can be installed on t he MFC -8950DW 1 , and it can hold up to 500 shee ts of 20 lb (80 g/m 2 ) pape r . W hen an optional tray is inst alled, the machin e can hold up to 1050 sheets of plain paper.
