Before you can use the machine , you must set up the hardware and install the software . Please read this “Quick Setup Guide” for the correct se tup procedure a nd installation instructions. Keep this “Quick Setup Guide”, User’s Guide and supplied CD-ROM in a convenient place for quick and easy reference at all times.

4 Setting Up the machine Do NOT connect the interface cable. Connecting the interface cable is done during the software installation process. 1 Open the front cover by pressing the front cover (1) release button. 2 Unpack the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly.

6 1 Push the lever (1) up to unlock the sca nner. (The gray scanner lock lever is located at the back left side, under the document cover (2) .) Do not connect the Parallel or USB cable yet. 1 Make sure that the power switch is off. Connect the AC power cord to the machine.

8 The machine displays the date and time, and prints it on every fax you send. 1 Press Menu . 2 Press 0 . 3 Press 2 . 4 Enter the last two digits of the year on the dial pad, and then press OK . (e.g. Enter 0 , 6 for 2006.) 5 Enter the two digits for the month on the dial pad, and then press OK .

10 There are four possible receive modes: Fax Only , Fax/Tel , Manual and External TAD . Choose the Receive Mode which best suits your needs. 1 Press Menu .

14 Make sure that you have finished the in structions from St ep 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected a n interface cable. 2 Turn on your computer.
15 8 When this screen appears, connect the USB interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows ® XP) (For Window s ® 98/98SE/Me/20 00) DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non- powered USB hub. Brother recommends that you connect the machine directly to your computer.
16 Make sure that you have finished the in structions from St ep 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your computer, if you already connected a n interface cable. 2 Turn on your computer.
17 8 When this screen appears, connect the parallel interface cable to your PC, and then connect it to the machine. (For Windows ® XP) (For Window s ® 98/98SE/Me/20 00) DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable. It may cause damage to your machine.
18 B When the following screen appe ars, click Finish and wait as the PC restarts Windows ® and continues the installation. C After the computer restarts, the installation of the Brother drivers will automatically start. Follow the instructions on the screen.
19 Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet. 2 Turn on your computer. You must be logged on with Administrator rights. DO NOT plug in the power cord before connecting the parallel interface cable.
20 8 When the Brother MFL-Pro Suite Software License Agreement window appears, click Yes if you agree to the Software License Agreement. 9 Choose Local Connection , and then click Next . The installation will continue. 0 When the On-Line Registration screen is displayed, make your selection and follo w the on-screen instructions.
21 Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from AC outlet. 2 Connect the network cable to the machine, and then connect it to a free port on yo ur hub.
22 9 Choose Network Connection and then click Next . 0 The installati on of the Brother drivers will automatically start. The inst allation screens appear one after anoth er. Please wait, it will take a few seconds for all the screens to appear. DO NOT try to cancel any of the screens during this installation.
23 . ■ Firewall settings on yo ur PC may reject the necessary network connect ion for Network Scanning and PC-F ax. Follow the instructions below to configure your Windows Firewall. If you are using a personal Fire wall software, se e the User's Guide for your so ftware or contact the software man ufacturer .

25 0 Click the Brother Laser icon. On the right side of the Choo ser , choose the machine to which you want to print. Close the Chooser . The printer and scanner driv ers have been installed. A To install Presto! ® PageManager ® , click the Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions.
26 Make sure that you have finished the in structions from St ep 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your Macintosh ® , if you already connected an interface cable.
27 DO NOT connect the machine to a USB port on a keyboard or a non- powered USB hub. 8 Plug in the power cord and turn on the machine. 9 Choose USB and then click OK . 0 Click Go , then choose Application . A Double-click the Utilities folder. B Double-click the Print Setup Utility icon.
28 D Choose USB . E Choose your model name, and then click Add . For Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 to 10.3 users: For Mac OS ® X 10.4 or greater users: F Click Printer Setup Utility , then choose Quit Printer Setup Utility . The MFL-Pro Suite, drivers and Brother ControlCenter2 have been installed.
29 Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet. 2 Turn on your Macint osh ® . 3 Insert the supplied CD-ROM for Macintosh ® into your CD-ROM drive.
30 0 Click the Brother Laser (IP) icon, and then choose BRN_XXXXXX . Close the Chooser . The Printer driver has been installed. A To install Presto! ® PageManager ® , click the Presto! PageManager icon and follow the on-screen instructions. Presto! ® PageManager ® has been installed and the installation is now complete.
31 Make sure that you have finished the instructions from Step 1 “Setting Up the machine” on pages 4 - 11. 1 Turn off and unplug the machine from the AC outlet and disconnect it from your Macintosh ® if you already connected an interface ca ble. 2 Turn on your Macint osh ® .
32 9 Choose Network and then click OK . 0 If you want to use the Scan ke y on the machine, you must check Register your computer with the "Scan To" functions at the machine box and enter a name you want to use for your Macintosh ® in Display Name .
33 F Click Add . For Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 to 10.3.x users ➝ Go to G For Mac OS ® X 10.4 users ➝ Go to H G Make the selection shown below. H Choose your model name and then click Add . For Mac OS ® X 10.2.4 to 10.3 users: For Mac OS ® X 10.4 or greater users: I Click Printer Setup Utility , then choose Quit Printer Setup Utility .
34 ■ For Network Users and Administrators The BRAdmin Professional utility for Windows ® is designed to manage y our Brother network connected devices such as network-ready Multif unction devices and/or network-ready printers in a Local Area Network (LAN) environment.
35 Setting your IP Addres s, Subnet Mask and Gateway using BRAdmin Professional 1 Start BRAdmin Professional, and select TCP/IP . 2 Click Devices , then choose Search Active Devices . BRAdmin will search for new device s automatically. 3 Double-click the new device.
36 The Brother BRAdmin Light softwa re is a Java™ application that is designed for the Apple Mac OS ® X environment. It supports so me of the features of t he Windows BRAdmin Professional software. For example, using the BRAdmin Light software, you can change some network settings on Brother’s network ready printers and multifunction devices.
37 The machine has the following optional accessories. You can expand the c apabilities of the machine by adding these items.
