2 1 1 Using printer keys 1 You can access the following features from your machine’s co ntrol panel. Job Cancel 1 To cancel the current print job, press Job Ca ncel . You can clear the data that is left in the printer memory by pressing Job Cancel .
Using the control panel 3 1 HP LaserJet Mode The HP LaserJet mode (or HP mode) is the emulatio n mode in wh ich this printer supports the PCL6 language of a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet laser printer. Ma ny applications support this type of laser printer.
Using the control panel 4 1 e Press a or b to choose HP LaserJet or BR-Script 3 . Press OK . f Press Start . g Press Stop/Exit . Printing the Print Configuration Li st (For HL-2280DW and MFC-7860DW) 1 You can print a list of current printer settings. a Press Menu .

8 2 2 Note • The screens in this section are from Windows ® XP. Screens on your PC may vary depen ding on your operating system. • If your PC is protected by a fire wall, and you are unabl e to network print, network scan or PC Fax, you may need to configure the firewall settings.
Printing 9 2 Printing a document 2 When the machine receives data from your computer , it begins printing by picking up paper from the pape r tray. The paper tray can feed many ty pes of paper and envelopes. (See the Basic User's Guide for informatio n about the Paper Tray and Recommended paper.
Printing 10 2 Duplex printing 2 The supplied printer driver supports duplex printing. Guidelines for printing on both sides of the paper 2 If the paper is thin, it may wrinkle. If paper is curled, turn over the stack, straighten it and then put it back in the paper tray or manual feed slot.
Printing 11 2 Simultaneous scanning, printing and faxing 2 Your machine can print from your computer while send ing or receiving a fax in memo ry, or while scanning a document into the computer. Fax sending will not be stopped during the computer printing.
Printing 12 2 Printer driver settings 2 Note For Macintosh user s see Printing and Faxing on page 121. You can change the following printer settings when you print from your computer: Paper Size .

Printing 15 2 Basic tab 2 You can also change the Page Layout settings by clicking the illustration on the left side of the Basic tab. a Choose the Paper Size , Orientati on , Copies , Media Type , Resolution and Print Settings (1). b Choose Multiple Page and Duplex / Bookle t (2).
Printing 16 2 Orientation 2 Orientation selects the position of how you r document will be printed ( Portra it or Landscape ). Copies 2 The copies selection sets the number of copies that will be p rinted.
Printing 17 2 Resolution 2 You can choose the resolution as follows. 300 dpi 600 dpi HQ 1200 Print Settings 2 You can manually change the print setting. Graphics This is the best mode for printing documents that contain graphics. Text This is the best mode for printing text d ocuments.
Printing 18 2 Duplex / Booklet 2 When you want to print a booklet or do duplex printing, use this function. None Disable duplex printing. Duplex / Duplex (Ma nual) When you want to do duplex printing, use these opt ions. • Duplex (Not available for MFC-7360N) The machine prints on both sides of the paper au tomatically.
Printing 19 2 Paper Source 2 You can choose Auto Select , Tray1 or Manual and specify sep arate trays for printing the first page and for printing from the second page onwards.
Printing 20 2 Advanced tab 2 Change the tab settings by clicking one of t he following selections: Scaling (1) Reverse Print (2) Use Watermark (3) Header-Footer Print (4) Toner Sav.
Printing 21 2 Use Watermark 2 You can put a lo go or text into your document as a wa termark. You can choose one of the preset Watermarks, or you can use a bitmap file that you have create d.
Printing 22 2 In Outline Text 2 Check In Outline Text if you only want to print an outline of the watermark. It is available when you choose a text watermark. Custom Settings 2 You can choose the watermark to be printed on the first pa ge or on the other pages.
Printing 23 2 Header-Footer Print 2 When this feature is enabled, it will print the d ate an d time on your document from your computer’s syste m clock and the PC login user name or the text you entered. By clicking Settings , you can customize the information.
Printing 24 2 Administrator 2 Administrators have the authority to limit access to functions such as scaling and watermark. Password Enter the password into this box. Note Click Set Password... to change the password. Copies Lock Lock the copy pages selection to prevent multiple cop y printing.
Printing 25 2 User Authentication (For MFC-7860DW) 2 If you are restricted from PC Print by the Secure Function Lock 2.0 feature, you need to set your ID and PIN in the User Authentication Settings dialog. Click Settings of User Authentication and select Use ID Name/PIN .
Printing 26 2 Improve Print Output 2 This feature allows you to improve a print quality problem. Reduce Paper Curl If you choose this sett ing, the paper curl ma y be reduced. If you are printing only a few pages, you do n ot need to choose this setting.
Printing 27 2 Print Profiles tab 2 Print Profiles (1) The printer driver of the machine has prese t print profiles. Select a desired profile a nd click OK to select the preset print settings. Edit a profile (2) You can edit and save a new print profile .
Printing 28 2 Editing a print profile 2 a Configure the print settings in the print driver. See Basic tab on page 15 and Advanced tab on page 20. b Click the Print Profiles tab. c Click the Edit a profile button. d Choose the icon from the drop-down list (1) and enter a profile name (2).

Printing 31 2 Tray Settings 2 Note From the Start menu, select Printers and Faxes 1 . Right-click the Brother MFC-XXXX Printer icon (where XXXX is your model name) and select Properties to a ccess the Tray Settings tab. 1 Select Settings and then Printers for Windows® 2000 users.
Printing 32 2 Serial No. (2) By clicking Auto Detect , the printer driver will query the machine and display its serial number. If it fails to receive the information, the screen will display "---------------".
Printing 33 2 Status Monitor 2 This reports the machine status ( any errors that may happen with the machine) when printing. If you would like to turn the status monitor on, follo w these steps: Click the Start button, All Programs 1 , Brother MFC-XXXX (where XXXX is your model name) and then Status Monitor .

Printing 35 2 • Page Order Specifies the order in which the pag es of your document will be printed. Front to Back prints the document so that page 1 is on top of the st ack. Back to Front prints the document so that page 1 is on the bottom of the stack.

Printing 38 2 Halftone Screen Lock Stops other applications from modifying t he Halftone settings. The default setting is On . High Quality Image Printing You can get high q uality image printing. If yo u set High Quality Image Printing to On , the printing speed will be slower.
Printing 39 2 Status Monitor 2 The Status Monitor utility is a config urable software tool for monit oring t he status of one or more devices, allowing you to get immediate notification of erro r messages such as paper empty or paper ja m.
Printing 40 2 Monitoring the machine’s status 2 The Status Monitor icon will change color depending on th e machine's status. A green icon indicates the normal stand-b y condition. A yellow icon indicates a warning. A red icon indicates a printing error has occurred.
41 3 3 The scanning operations and drivers will be different de pending on your operating sy stem. The ma chine uses a TWAIN compliant driver for scanning documen ts from your applications. (Windows ® XP/Windows Vista ® /Windows ® 7) Two scanner drivers are installed.
Scanning 42 3 d Click the Select button. e Choose the scanner you are using from the Available Scanners li st. Note Choose TWAIN: TW-Brother MFC-XXXX or TWAIN: TW-Brother MFC-XXXX LAN . f Check the Display scanner dialog box on the Scan or Get Photo panel.
Scanning 43 3 Pre-Scanning to crop a portion you want to scan 3 You can preview your image and crop unwanted portions be fore scanning by using the PreScan button. When you are satisfied with the preview, click the Start button in the Scanner Setup dialog box to scan the image.

Resolution and Scan Type will be alte red for each default setting. The default settings are listed in the table b elow: Resolution 3 You can choose a scanning resolution from the Resolu tion drop-down list.
Scanning 46 3 256 Color Uses up to 256 colors to scan the image. 24bit Color Uses up to 16.8 million colo rs to scan the ima ge. Although using 24bit Color creates an image with the most accura te color, the image file will be about three times larger than a file created with 256 Color .
Scanning 47 3 Executive 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 in (184.1 x 266.7 mm) Business Card 3.5 x 2.4 in (90 x 60 mm) To scan business cards, choose the Business Card size, and then place the business card face down at the top left of the scanner glass, as indicat ed by the document guidelines on the machine.
Scanning 48 3 Scanning a document using the WIA driver (Windows ® XP/Windows Vista ® /Windows ® 7) 3 WIA compliant 3 For Windows ® XP/Windows Vista ® /Windows ® 7 you can choose Windows ® Imag e Acquisition (WIA) for scanning images from the machine.

Scanning 52 3 Note If you scan the document at a resolution greater than 1200 dpi, the file size may be very large. Make sure that you have enough memory and hard disk space for the si ze of the file you are trying to scan. If you do not have enough memory or hard disk sp ace then your PC may freeze and yo u could lose your file.
Scanning 53 3 Scanning a document using the WIA driver (Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Fax and Scan) 3 Scanning a document in to the PC 3 There are two ways in which you can scan a whole p age. You can either use the ADF (automatic document feeder) (Not available for DCP-7060D and HL-2280DW ) or the scanner glass.

89 5 5 Remote Setup 5 The Remote Setup program lets you configure many machine and network settings from a Win dows ® application. When you start this applicat ion, the setti ngs on your machine will be downloaded automatically to your PC and displayed on your PC screen.
Remote Setup (MFC mod els only) 90 5 Apply Lets you upload data to the machine without exiting the Remote Setup application. Print Lets you print the chosen items o n the machine. You cannot print th e data until it is uploaded to the machine.
91 6 6 PC-FAX sending 6 The Brother PC-FAX feature lets you use your PC to send a document from an application as a standard fax. You can send a file created in any application on y our PC as a PC-FAX.

Outside line access Enter a number to access an outside line. This is sometimes required by local PBX telephone systems (for example, dialing 9 to get an outside line in your office).
