Chapter 1 4 Slee p mode 1 The S l e ep Mode S etting can redu ce powe r consum ption. When the mac hi ne is in Sleep Mode (Power S ave mode) it acts as t hough it were turned off. Receiving data or starting an opera t ion wa k e s up the m achine from Sleep mode to Ready mode.

Securi ty feat ures 9 2 Se tting up and c han ging the Pu bli c user mod e 2 Publ i c user mode restricts the functions that are avail ab l e for P ubl i c users . P ubl ic users do not need to enter a password to access the features made available t hrough this setting.

Chapter 3 24 Set ting yo ur c hange s as t he ne w de fault 3 You can save the fax settings for Fax Resolution , Contrast , Real Time TX , Glass ScanSize and Coverpage Setup you use most often by setting them as the default. These settings will stay u ntil you c hange them again.

41 5 5 Telephone line servi ces 5 To ne or Puls e (Can ada o nly) 5 If y ou have a Pulse di ali ng service, but need to send Tone signa l s (for example, for telephone bank i n g), follow the instructions below. I f you have Touch To ne service, you will not need this f e at ure to sen d tone signa l s.
Chapter 5 42 The third way is the easiest: Buy a t ri pl ex adapter. Y ou can plug a t riplex adapter into an RJ14 outlet. It sep arat es the wires into two separate RJ11 jack s (Line 1, L ine 2) and a third RJ14 jack (Lines 1 and 2). If your machine is on Line 1, plug the machine into L1 of the triplex adapter.

Chapter 5 44 Additional wa ys to store num bers 5 Sett ing up Group s for Broa dca sti ng 5 If you often want to send the same fax mess age t o many fax numb ers you can set up a Group. Groups are stored on a One Touch ke y or a Speed Dial number. Each Group use s up a One Touch k ey or a Speed Dial location.

Chapter 5 48 Del etin g Gr oup numb er s 5 You can delete a Group number that has already been stored. If a Group has a schedul ed j ob or fax forwarding num ber, it wi l l be dimmed on the LCD. You cannot select the num ber to delete it. a Pre ss Address Book .
49 6 6 Fax reports 6 Some fax reports (transmission verification and f ax journal) can be printed autom at i c a l ly and m anually. Tr ansmis sion verif icatio n repor t 6 You can use the Tran s miss i on Verification Report as proof that you sent a f ax.

51 7 7 Copy setting s 7 You can change the c opy sett i ngs temporaril y for the next copy. These se t tings are temporary, and the machin e returns to its default settings one minu t e a f ter copy i ng, unle s s you h ave set the Mode Time r to 30 seconds or less.

60 A Cleaning an d chec king the machine A Clean t he outside and inside of the m achine regularly with a dry, lint-free cloth. When you replace t he toner cart r idge or the drum unit, make sure that y ou clean the inside of the machine.

62 d In the A DF unit, c lean the white bar (1) and the glass strip (2) underneat h i t with a soft li nt -free cl ot h moistened wi th water. Note In a ddition to clea ning the sc anner glass and gl ass strip wi t h a soft lint-free cloth moistened with water, run your finger t ip over t he glass to s ee if you can fe el anything on it.

Pull the drum unit o ut until it stops. d Turn the green lock lever (1) a t t he l eft of the mac hi ne counterclockwise to the release position. Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the f ront of the drum unit and rem ove it f rom the machine.
64 IMPORTAN T • W e recomm end that you place the drum unit and/or the t oner cart ridge on a c l ean, flat surf ace with a sheet of disposable paper or cloth underneath it in case you accide nt ally spi ll or scatter toner. • To preve nt damage to the machine from static electricity, DO NOT touch the electrodes s hown i n the illustration.
Routine maint enance 65 A g Match the guide ends (2) of the drum unit to t h e c marks (1) on both sides of the machine, then gent l y slide the drum unit into t h e machine until it st op s at the green lock lever. h Turn the green lock l e v e r (1) cl ockwise to the lock po s ition.
66 Cl eani ng the co ron a wi res A If you have print quality problems, clean the four coron a wires as f ollows: a Press t he f ront cover rel ea s e button and then op en the fron t cover. b Hold the green handle of the drum unit. Pull the drum u nit out until it stops.
Routine maint enance 67 A c Hold the handle of the t o ner cartridge and slightly push it toward the machine to unl ock it. Then pull it ou t of the drum unit. Rep eat this for all t he t oner cartri d ges. d Push to release the latches of the corona wire cover (1), and then open t he cover.
68 e Clean the c orona wires inside the drum unit by gen t ly sl idi ng t he green tabs from left to right and right to left several t ime s . Note • Be s u r e t o return the t ab to t he home pos ition ( a ) (1). I f you do not, printed pages may have a vertical stripe.
Routine maint enance 69 A f Close th e corona wire cov e r. g Repeat steps d to f to clean each of three remaining corona wires. h Hold the handle of the t o ner cartridge and slide the toner cartri d ge into the drum unit, t hen s lightly pul l it toward y ou until you hear it cli ck into place.

(9 4 mm) interv al s, the drum may hav e f o r eign m at erial, such as glue fr om a labe l stuck on the drum surf a c e .

72 i Turn the green lock lever (1) at the left of the machine counterclock wise t o the release posi tion. Ho lding the green handles of the drum uni t, lift t he front of the drum unit and rem ove it f rom the machine.
Routine maint enance 73 A j Hold the handle of the t o ner cartridge and slightly push it to u nlock i t . Then pull it out of the drum unit. Repeat this for all the toner cartri dg es.
74 k Turn the drum unit o v e r by holding the green handles. M ake s ure that the drum unit gears (1) are on the left hand side. l Read following information from the drum dot check sheet. Dot col or: The color of pri nted dot s is the color of the d r u m you sh oul d clean.
Routine maint enance 75 A n Turn the drum unit gear toward you by hand while looking at t he surface of the suspecte d area. o When you have found the mark on the drum that matches t he drum dot check sheet, wipe the surface of t h e drum gently with a cotton swab unt i l the ma r k on the surface comes off.
76 q Hold the handle of the t on er cartridge and slide the toner c art ridge into the drum unit, then sl ightly pull it toward you until yo u hear it c lick in t o place. Make sure that you match t h e toner cartridge color to the same color label on the drum unit.
Routine maint enance 77 A t Turn the green lock l e v e r (1) cl ockwise to the lock po s ition. u Push the drum unit in until it stops . v Close the front cover of the machin e. w Plug the machine’s power c ord back into the AC power outlet first , conn ect all cables, an d then pl ug in the t el ephone line cord.
78 Cl eaning the pape r pick- up rolle rs A If y ou have p aper feed probl ems, clean t he pick-up rollers as follows: a Turn off t he machine’s po w er swi tch. Unplug the power co r d f rom the AC power outlet. b Pull the paper tray c ompl et e l y out o f the machine.

Routine maint enance 83 A Packing a nd s hipping the mach ine A WARNING This machine is heavy and weighs approximately 62.8 lb (28.5 kg). To prevent possible inju r ies at least two peop le should lift the ma c hine. B e careful not to pi nch your fingers wh en you put the machine down.
84 a Turn off t he machine’s p ow e r switch. Unplug the telephone li ne cord first, disconnect al l cables, and then unplug the power cord from the A C power outlet. b Press t he f ront cover rel ea s e button and then op en the fron t cover. c Hold the green handle of the drum unit.

Holding the green handles of the drum unit, lift the front of the drum unit a nd remove i t f rom the machine. IMPORTAN T • H old the green handles of the drum unit when y ou carry it.
