2 Introduction Intr oduction This User ’ s Guide provides detailed ins tructions for installing a nd configuring your Adaptec W ireless Router as part of a Local Ar ea Network (LAN) and/or W i reless LAN (WLAN). This Guide assumes you have a working k nowledge of your computer and that you are famili ar with the W indows operating system.

Create a network with only wir eless computer stations by installing wir eless network adapters in all your computer s, then following the setup instructions provided in Setting Up a New Network (WLAN only) on page 15 .

13 Installing Y our Wireless Router Setting Up a New Netw ork (LAN & WLAN) Follow these instr uctions if you are incl uding your W ireless Router in a new network that includes both wir ed and wireless stations— a combination LAN and WLAN. T o connect your W ireless Router: 1 Find a suitable location to install your W ireless Router.
14 Installing Y our Wireless Router 5 Connect a network cable to one of the four LAN ports on your W ireless Router. (See the Figur e in Step 3 .) Connect the other end of the cable to an Ethernet port on your computer . 6 Add more LAN stations to your W ireless Router, if desired, using network cables.

These instructions assum e that you have an Broadband modem currently connected to one of your wired computer stations.

23 Understanding the W eb-based Wireless Router Utility Opening and Logging In to the Utility The instructions pr ovided in this section assume that your W ireless Router is set to its factory default settings. If yo u have changed any setting on your W ireless Router, pr ess and hold the INIT button for at least five seconds.
24 Understanding the W eb-based Wireless Router Utility 5 Click Login . The Device Info page appears. It provides basic status information about your W ireless Router. Note: Only one user at a time can be logged in to the Utility. An Administrator who is logged in but inactive is automatically logged out after a set time.

28 Configuring Y our Wireless Router 4 Choose a DNS Pr oxy setting. If you select Enable , your W ireless Router provi des DNS service to your network stati ons using your ISP’s DNS server . (See DNS in the Glossary for mor e information.) 5 Adjust the IP pool values, if desired.

39 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Changing the T ransmission Rate The default transmission rate set ting, Automatic , allows your W ireless Router to automatically adjust its transmission speed for optimal performance and the long est operating range.
40 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Requiring Specified SSIDs Some wireless devices (such as wireless network adapters) can set their SSIDs to any , which allows them to connect to any available W ireless Access Point or W ireless Router . In some envir onments, such free access to your WLAN might be undesirable or pose security ri sks.

42 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Enabling WEP Encryption—New WLAN with Adaptec Wireless Devices Onl y T o enable WEP encryption: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .) 2 Click W ireless (802.11) under Basic Se tup on the menu list. 3 Click the Security tab.
43 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN 7 T ype in your chosen Passphrase , then click outside the PassPhra se box. The WEP Keys and the WEP Key to Use are generated. Note: Make a note of all the WEP settings so that you can apply them to all wireless stations on your WLAN.
44 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN Enabling WEP Encryption—Existing WLAN or New WLAN with Non-Adaptec Brand Wireless Devices If you are enabling WEP encryption on an existing WLAN, Adaptec suggests adjusting the WEP encryption settings on your W ireless Router first and on your wir eless network stations second.
45 Changing the Setup of Y our WLAN 7 T ype keys in the WEP Key 1 to WEP Key 4 text boxes, then select a WEP Key to Use . The number of characters in your WEP Keys depends on the WEP Key Length: 8 Set Authentication. See Setting Authenti cation on pa ge 4 6 for help choosing a setting.

49 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Contr olling Access Y our W ireless Router’s Access C ontrol function allows you to control W AN-to-LAN or from LAN-to-W AN access. T o change Access Control settings: 1 Open the Utility and log in. (See page 22 .
50 Using the Adv anced Router Functions d Filter Packets from LAN —Set this option to Enable if you want to block users on your network fr om particular Internet activities, such as web surfing or retrieving Internet e-mail. After you select Enable, you are asked to enter the port number of any Internet service you want filtered.

Y our W ireless Router can deny access to any W eb site containing a word that matches or partially matches any keyw ord you specify .
53 Using the Adv anced Router Functions Using the Virtual Ser ver Generally , a router pr otects your internal network compu ters by filtering o ut unrecognized packet s from the Internet. The refore, all network computers behind your W ireless Router ar e invisible to the Internet—the Internet sees only your W ireless Router.

67 Glossary preamble A pream ble is a signal used to synchronize the transmission tim ing on your WLAN. A series of transmission pulses is sent ahead of the data to signal a new transmissio n. This ensures that wir eless devices receiving the data corr ectly interpret when the transmission starts.
68 Glossary WEP W ired Equivalent Privacy ( WEP) is a security feature that provides confidentiality (by e ncrypting the data being sent over the radio waves of your WLAN) and authentication (by using a shared key between the wireless device and the Access Point or W ireless Router).
