2 Getting Started Getting Started This User ’ s Guide explains how to install your AUA-141 1 DuoConnect TM for Notebooks adapter and it s associated drive rs. It describes how to connect your A UA-141 1 to a USB device and a digital video camera, and contains an overview of USB and 1394 (FireW i re TM ) technology .
3 Getting Started Installation Overview Caution: Do not insert the DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter into your computer before you install the Adaptec USB CardBus Plug -in.
4 Installing the Adaptec USB CardBus Plug-in Installing the Adaptec USB Car dBus Plug-in (W indows XP and 2000 only ) If you are r unning W indows XP or W indows 2000 on your notebook computer , you must ins tall the Adaptec USB CardBus Plug-in software befor e you insert the DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter .
5 Inserting the Adapter Inserting the Adapter T o successfully install your Du oConnect for N otebooks ad apter: 1 Disconnect any devices that are connected to the adapter . 2 Carefully insert the adapter into the Car dBus slot of your computer , as shown.
6 Installing the Device Drivers Installing the Device Drivers The DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter contains four controllers. One driver is installe d for each controller . When successfully installed, these controllers are displayed separately in the W indow s Device Manager .
7 Installing the Device Drivers Windows XP Note: If your operating system is updated with the latest Microsoft service pack, W indows recognizes the new har dwar e and automatically installs the necessary drivers.
8 Installing the Device Drivers 2 Click Continue Anyway . Note: Adaptec drivers have been fully tested and certified to work with the AUA-141 1 card. 3 When the installation is complete, click Finish . 4 If you are pr ompted to restart your computer , click Ye s .

16 Installing the Device Drivers Windows 9 8 SE These instructions guide you thr ough the installation of 1394, USB 1.1, and USB 2. 0 drivers. These driv ers ar e installed in sequence, not all at the same time. Follow these instructio ns to ensure that all drivers ar e installed correctly .

19 Installing the Device Drivers 9 Click Next . 10 Click Search for the best driver ... , then click Next . 11 Ensure that your DuoConnect for Notebooks CD is in your CD-ROM drive, then select Specify a location , type the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive, and click Next .
20 Installing the Device Drivers V erifying Driver Installation T o verify that the drivers a r e installed: 1 Right-click the My Computer desktop icon, select Properties , and click the Device Manager tab. 2 Select V iew devices by type . 3 Expand 1394 Bus Controllers and Universal Serial Bus controllers .
21 Connecting Devices Connecting Devices Y ou can connect standard USB 1.1 and high-speed USB 2.0 devices to your DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter . T o ensure proper functioning, Adaptec r e commends using only standar d USB cables with a maximum length of 6 feet (2 meters).
22 Connecting Devices External P ower Sour ce Y ou may need to connect an external power sour ce to the DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter if you ar e connecting it to multiple USB devices with varying power r equirements, or Fi reWire d ev i ce s t ha t do no t have their own power supply .
23 Connecting Devices Connecting Multiple De vices Y ou can connect multiple USB and FireW ire (1394) devices to your DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter by using hubs , as shown.
24 Removing the Adapter Removing the Adapter Y ou must use the Unplug or Eject Har dware W izard to pr operly disconnect your DuoConnect for Notebooks adapter fr om your computer . T o disconnect the adapter: 1 Stop and disconnect all devices connected to the adapter .
