6 System Requirements T o successfully inst all and use your Adaptec ACS-120 USB Enclosure, your computer must meet these r equirements: ■ Microsoft ® Wi n d o w s ® computers must be running W indows XP , W indows 2000, W i ndows Me, or W indows 98SE Macintosh computers must be r unning OS 9.
7 Preparing the Disk Drive for Installation Befor e installing the disk driv e, ensure that it meets the requir ements listed in Supported Disk Drives on page 5 . Set the drive jumper to Master or Device 0 mode (or equivalent, as described on your dis k drive), following the instru ctions on your disk drive.
8 3 Slide the disk drive into th e enclosure, then use the screws you rem ove d in Step 1 on page 7 to secure the en closure cover , as shown below . Installing the Device Driver– Windo ws 98SE Only Note: Windows XP/2000/Me and Macintosh users —No driver installation is required.
9 Connecting and P owering On Note: Windows 98SE users only —Y ou must install the device drivers befor e connecting and powering on the enclosur e. Plug the mini-connector of the included USB Y -cable (shown on page 5 ) into the USB port on the enclosure, then plug the main connector into an a vailable USB 2.
10 Connecting the USB Y-Cable to a S econd USB 2.0 P ort If you have another available USB port on your computer (does not have to be a US B 2.0 port), plug in the Y -cable’s seconda ry connector . The secondary USB co nnector provides additional power to the enclosure.
11 Next Steps If you have installed a new disk drive in your encl osure, you must prepare it for use by initial iz ing and formatting it, so that your computer can recognize an d communicate with it.
12 Disconnecting Y our USB Enclosure Although the enclosur e supports hot-plugging and hot- unplugging, Adaptec recommend s that you foll ow these instructions to gr acefully disconnect your enclosur e from y our computer .
13 T roubleshooting If you have pr oblems installing or using your Adaptec AC S-120 USB Enclosur e, work thr ough this list of suggestions: ■ Ensur e that the disk dri ve has been pro perly installe d. ■ T ry connecting the enclosure to your computer thr ough a diff er ent USB port.
