Contents INTRODUCTION ............................................................................................................................... ............................................................. 4 Safety Instructions .................
Intr oduction This manual cov ers installation for both the C AM8 and C AM8PR O . They w ere manufactured to ensure the highest quality audio signal pr oduction and control, while still incorporating sim- ple-to-use featur es.
Safety Instructions Bogen’ s C AM8-Series mix ers are electrical equipment, so tak e all the precautions usuall y tak en when installing and using electrical equipment (see inside front cov er).
Quick Star t 1 . Unpack and Connect (See page 11 for mor e details). A. Check mixer f or shipping damage. Rack Mounting: T o mount the C AM8 and C AM8PR O to a 1 9” rack, lift the unit up to the front of the rack and secur e it to the front of the rack with the necessary scre ws (not included with this unit).
P anel Descriptions CAM8 F r ont Panel 1 . Main/Auxiliar y Bus Selector (one per channel) A 4-position switch which selects destination of channel input. Input can be routed to: a) the main bus (M-up , A-down); b) the auxiliar y bus (M-down, A-up - shown at right); c) both the main and auxiliar y bus (both up); or d) neither bus (both down).
CAM8PRO F r ont P anel 1 . Main/Auxiliar y Bus Selector (one per channel) A 4-position switch which selects destination of channel input. Input can be routed to: a) the main bus (M-up, A-down); b) the auxiliar y bus (M-down, A-up- shown at right); c) both the main and auxiliar y buses (both up); or d) neither bus (both down).
CAM8/CAM8PRO Rear P anel 1 . Ground Connection on Rear P anel Access to ground. 2. AC P ow er Jack Mix er power supply input. Accepts a 4-pin DIN connection from a 1 8V CT 1 .5 Amp trans- former (uses appr oximately 500 mA). 3. Phantom P ow er Switch When activated, supplies 30V DC power to all inputs set to mic le vel.
Helpful Hints Electrical equipment operates best in a clean, dr y , well-ventilated en vironment fr ee of vibra- tion and electromagnetic f ields. The following are some guidelines to achie ve optimal per- formance. Av oid placing the mixer and cables near heat sour ces.
Installation Note: T ake the mix er out of the box and inspect for shipping damage. If ther e is obvious ph ysical damage to the outside of the mixer , contact the supplier of the mixer bef ore you begin installation .
C. Connect Output: Make a connection betw een Main Bus Output T erminals (3) and an input jack of an amplifier . Press Main Output Micr ophone/Line Switch (2) to appropri- ate position: “in” for line-level output (0 dBµ) or “out” for mic-level (-50 dBµ) output.
Operation The primar y goal when establishing the gain settings of the mix ers is to hav e each channel operating at the maximum gain without clipping, while leaving adequate headr oom on the vol- ume control knob .
T r oubleshooting Gain Structur e If the procedur e follow ed to this point does not give satisfactor y results, follow the appr opriate adjustment sequence below: If channel clipping occurs If the signal is clipping or producing audible distortion, the gain is too high.
Recommended Input Wiring Methods These are the best wa ys to connect sources to the mix er . The mixer input is alwa ys balanced. From the dra wings below choose the wiring method for your input de vice (either balanced or unbalanced).
Fine T uning Lo w Cut Switch T o remov e excessive bass from an individual channel, press the Lo w Cut Switch ( 1 ) for that channel. This featur e helps eliminate low frequency noise (signals of 1 50 Hz and below , such as back- ground rumble fr om ventilation systems, etc .
Compr essor/Limiter (CAM8PRO onl y) The Compressor/Limiter ( 1 ) is a dynamic range contr oller that can be used to compen- sate for signals that ma y sound unnatural or cause audible distortion. This is indicated by the LED Bar Graph Output Meter (3) occasionally exceeding + 1 2 VU (red).
Special F eatures Activation The CAM8-Series mixers ha ve sev eral built-in features which ar e easily activated by making adjustments inside the mix er chassis. Changing the selection of all built-in featur es requir es only the corr ect placement of internal jumpers or var ying the settings of an internal poten- tiometer .
J umper Options Changing Jumper Settings T o change a jumper setting, r emov e the ten screws secur ed to the top of the mixer . After remo ving the top of the mixer , locate the jumper to be changed by r eferring to the dra wing on page 1 8. Jumpers ar e included from the factor y in positions: J2, J 1 7, J 1 8, J2 1 , and J22.
Linking CAM8-Series mixers can be link ed in several wa ys. The two principal wa ys of linking the mix- ers are Simple and Complex Linking. Simple Linking is the expansion to more than 8 inputs b y connecting two 8-channel mix- ers via the auxiliar y bus.
Simple Linking Simple linking or “daisy-chaining” allows the expansion of mix er inputs in multiples of 8 inputs by chaining together multiple mix ers with auxiliar y buses. T o preserve certain mixer featur es, this must be done in the wa y shown below .
Complex Linking Complex Linking allows multiple mix ers to produce tw o separate mixes fr om the same set of inputs. The most common complex linking application is shown below .This method can also be used to implement a “mix minus” application. This method (CAM8PR O only) creates tw o separate mixes.
A C P o wer Connection This mix er is powered b y an 1 8 V olt, 1 .5 Amp center -tapped transformer (supplied). If anoth- er A C supply is used, it should be of equal voltage and ha ve at least a 2 1 V olt-Amp rating. The details of the A C P ow er Jack on the rear panel are as sho wn in the following figur e.
T r oubleshooting Tips NO PO WER Check the connections between the mix er and the power suppl y and the external A C power supply . Examine the 4-pin connector as shown on page 23. Check the wall outlet. NO SOUND • Mak e sure the MIC/Line switch is in the pr oper position.
Glossar y Auxiliar y Input - Accepts only a balanced, line-lev el input (unlik e the 8 channels); the auxil- iar y input has no volume contr ol. Compression Ratio - The ratio of the output level abo ve the thr eshold level to the input lev el above the thr eshold.
