Intr oduction The Gigabit Interface Converter (GBI C) ports on your system connect to Gigabit Ether net networks thr ough a GBIC transceiver (Fig ur e 1), pr oviding a high -speed connection ov er fiber -optic or co pper cable. The transceiver connects to the network using a fiber -op tic duplex subscriber conn ector (SC) or a RJ-45 c onnector .
T o ensure optimal performance, compatibility , and regulatory compliance, us e only GBIC transceivers that 3Co m supports. Fo r a list of currently supported GBICs, see thi s 3Com W eb site: http://www.
1000BASE- LX GBIC T ransceivers 1000BASE-LX GBIC transceiver supports these connections: ■ Dir ect connection to single-mod e fiber -optic cable. ■ Connection to multimode fi ber through a condi.
1000BAS E-LH70 GBIC T ran sceivers T able 3 shows the transmission ra nge and ot her data for this connecti on. T able 4 shows the optical parameters of the 1000BASE-LH70 GBIC T ransceiver . CAUTION: If using cable length s shorter than 20 km, you must ensure that a single-mode fiber attenuator is used to avoid signal saturation.
1000BASE- T GBIC T ransce ivers The 1000BASE-T GBIC tran sceiver supports connections over Category 5 cabling up to 100 m (328 ft). Ta b l e 4 Optical Parameters Parameter Sym bol Min Ty p Max Units.
Installing the T ran sceiver The follo wing instru ctions, war nings an d notes appl y to all of the transceivers co ver ed in this Guid e. Safety Pr ecautions Be sur e to follow all safety precautions when you replace a GBIC transceiver in the syst em.
Inserting the T ransceiv er Befor e you connect the system to th e Gigabit Ether net network, first insert the transceiver into the GBIC port on the system, as described in this section. The procedur e is simi lar for all supported units with a GBIC port.
Removing th e T ransceiv er T o replace an existing GBIC trans ceiver , compress the side tabs and gently pull the transceiver out of the port. Figure 2 Inserting the GBIC T ransceiver in a GBIC Port Figure 2 shows a switch in the Supe rSta ck 3 Switch 4900 Series.
T rouble shooting T ransceivers After you insert the GBIC transceiver into the port, the system softwar e verifies the transceiver operation. If you should exp erience problems r efer to the steps and conditions below . T o ensure optimal performance, compatibility , and regulatory compliance, us e only GBIC transceivers that 3Co m supports.
Using a newer version GBIC transceiv er (G BIC91, GBIC92, GBIC93, or GBIC97) in a system ru nning older c ode (pre-Release 3.0) can generate the following message. WARNING: The GBIC in Port xx is NOT approved by 3Com & may violate electromagnetic emission or safety requirements for your country.
■ Unqualified GBIC: Checksum match error Meaning: The system uses checksum err or detection to ve rify the integrity of the GBIC data. If the system det ects a pr oblem with the data, it displays an error message that indicates a che cksum failur e.
Corrective action: Replace the tra nsceiver . If the pr oblem persists, contact network suppli er or 3Com T ech nical Suppo rt. For contact information, see the T echnical Suppo rt appendix in the Getting Started Guide for your system.
Safety Information Y ou must read t he following safe ty informa tion befo re carrying out any installatio n or removal of components, or any maintenance pr ocedur es on the Switch. WA R N I N G : Warnings contain direc tions that y ou must follow for your personal safety .
Never look at the transmit laser while it is powered-up. Never look directly at the fiber po rts and fiber cable ends when they are powered- up. WA R N I N G : Use of controls or ad ju stments of performance or procedures other than those sp ecifie d herein may result in hazardous laser emissions.
Ne regardez jamais le laser tant qu'il est sous tension. Ne regardez jamais directement le port à fibres optiques et les embouts de câbles à fibres optiques tant qu'ils sont sous tension.
