16 T1 FIBER OPTIC LINE EXTENDER/SIMULATOR Appendix: Fiber Optic Planning Guidelines A.1 Introduction Designing a fiber optic link means considering two main physical limitations: System attenuation and fiber optic dispersion. Attenuation results when properties of the fiber optic link reduce the intensity of the fiber optic signals.
17 A.2 Fiber Optic Calculation S TEP 1: A TTENUATION C ONSIDERATIONS Figure A-1 shows the various elements of the fiber optic link that decrease light intensity. Depending on the real installation, you must subtract a series of attenuation (att.) values from the raw optic output level of the fiber optic transmitter.
18 T1 FIBER OPTIC LINE EXTENDER/SIMULATOR (max, cable [2] att.)=(fiber optic power budge) - (right part att.) = 17 dB - 12 dB = 5 dB. (max. cable [2] length) = (max.cable [2] att.)/(cable [2] att. factor) = 5 dB/3 dB/km = 5.6 km Example 2: Maximum length of cable [2] when connected directly (without splices, etc.
19 APPENDIX: Fiber Optic Planning Guidelines S TEP 2: O VERALL O PERATION C ONSIDERATIONS The operation diagram ( Figure A-2 ) shows one example diagram and one blank diagram to be completed based on real values: 1. Draw horizontal lines at the min. and max.
