ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 37 C HAPTER 3 Wireless LAN Network This chapter provides backgro und info rmation on wireless LAN networks. 3.1 Wireless LAN Overview The following figure pro vides an exampl e of a wireless network with an AP .
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 38 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network • Every device in the same wireless network must use security compatible with the AP or peer computer . Security stops unauthorized devices from using the wireless network. It can also protect the information that is sent in the wireless network.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 39 Y ou can use the MAC address filter to tell the AG -220 in AP mode which devices are allowed or not allowed to use the wireless network. If a device is allowed to us e the wireless network, it still has to have the correct information (SSID, channel, a nd security).
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 40 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network • Open System mode is implemented for ease-o f-use and when security is not an issue. The wireless station and the AP or peer com puter do not share a secre t key .
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 41 If both an AP and the wireless clients suppor t WP A2 and you have an external RADIUS server , use WP A2 for stronger da ta encryption.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 42 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network 3.3.2 PIN Configuration Each WPS-enabled device has its own PIN (Personal Identificatio n Number). This may either be static (it cannot be chang e d) or dynamic (in some devices you can generate a new PIN by clicking on a button in th e configuration interface).
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 43 Figure 21 Example WPS Process: PIN Method 3.3.3 How WPS Works When two WPS-enabled devices connect, each de vice must assume a spe cific role.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 44 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network Figure 22 How WPS works The roles of registrar and enrollee last only as long as the WPS setup process is active (two minutes). The next time you use WPS, a different device can be the registrar if necessary .
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 45 Figure 23 WPS: Example Network S tep 1 In step 2 , you add ano ther wireless client to the networ k.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 46 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network Figure 25 WPS: Example Network S tep 3 3.3.4 Limit ations of WPS WPS has some limitati ons of which you shoul d be aware. • WPS works in Infrastructure networks on ly (where an AP and a wireless client communicate).
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 47 Y ou can easily check to see if this has happ ened. WPS works between only two devices simultaneously , so if another device has enrolle d your device will be unable to en roll, and will not have access to the network.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 48 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network In the web configurator , go to the W ireless LAN main screen and then select OTIST . T o change the Setup key , enter zero to eight printable char acters. T o have OTIST automatically generate a WP A-PSK key , select the Y es! check box.
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Chapter 3 Wireless LAN Network 49 3.4.3 Notes on OTIST 1 If you enabled OTIST in the wireless client, you see this screen each time you start the utility .
ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide 50 Ch apter 3 Wireless LAN Network 5 If you configure OTIST to generate a WP A-PSK key , this key changes each time you run OTIST . Therefore, if a new wireless client jo ins your wireless network, you need to run OTIST on the AP and ALL the wireless clients again.

ZyXEL AG-220 User’s Guide Appendix D 117 For added security , certificate-based authen tications (EAP-TLS, EAP-TTLS and PEAP) use dynamic keys for data encryption. They are ofte n deployed in corporate environments, but for public deployment, a simp le user name and p assword pair is more practical.
