Overview 4 Overview The X3 is an ADSL modem and a gateway/router all contai ned in one device. The ADSL modem gives you a connection to the Internet through your Internet service provider. The gateway/rout er provides an interface between th e Internet and your own local network.
Chapter 1: Ins tallatio n Inst ru ctions 5 1 Installation Instructions This chap ter covers t he basic instruct ions need ed to inst all your X3 and connect to the Internet. Th ese instru ctions can be used by those with a Macintosh, Linux, or Window s operating system.

Step 1: Installing the Software Important! This section is for Windows computers only.

Chapter 1: Ins tallatio n Inst ru ctions 9 The modem’s ET HERNET connector is at the back of the modem. 3 3 3 3 Plug the included X3 power cube into a power strip or wall outlet, and then into the modem’s power ( PWR ) jack. Important! Only use the power cube shipped with the X3.

If you are using a Macintosh or Linux co mputer, your brow ser is already configured properly. However, you must ensure that your computer’s TCP/IP settings are configured properly.

(If you do not have Version 7.2, you can get a f ree upgrade from Netscape Communication Corp. If you are not sure what vers ion you have, open Netscape Navigator and fro m the Help menu, choose About Netsca pe .

16 ADSL X3 User's Gui de 2 2 2 2 The Zoo m Config uration M anager open s and displays its Basic Setup page. Use this Web page to configure the modem so it can connect with your Internet service provider. You can configure the X3 manually or you can have the modem automatically configu re itself.

Typically, you would manually configure your modem if: • You already have the VPI , VCI , and Encapsulation setting s from your Internet service provide r .

(That is, click the arr owhead at the far rig ht of the box to view the items in the list, then select Enabled .) 4 4 4 4 Select your service provider’s Encapsulat ion setting from the Encapsulatio n drop-down list.
