GETTING STARTED 3 INTRODUCTION Please check t hat you recei v ed all of the follo w ing parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Insert four supplied batteries (AAA, R03, UM-4) according to th e polarity markings (+ / –) on the insi de of the battery compartment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST ANDBY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it to the standby mode. When you turn on this unit, you will hear a click and ther e will be a 4 to 5-second delay before this unit can reproduce sound. In standby mo de, this unit consumes a small amount of power in order to receive infrared-signa ls from the remote control.

SPEAKER SE TU P 11 PREP ARA TION The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R * speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. * ITU-R is the radio communication sector of the ITU (International T elec ommunication Union).
12 SPEAKER SETUP Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speak ers, and if the polarity of the speaker connect ions is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.
13 SPEAKER SE TU P PREP ARA TION ■ FRONT terminals Connect one or two speaker systems (2, 3) to these terminals. If you use only one speaker system, connect it to the FR ONT A or B terminals. ■ CENTER terminals Connect a center spea ker (4) to these terminal s.

21 CONNECTIONS PREP ARA TION If you are using 4 or 6 ohm speakers, set the impedance to 4 or 6 ohms as follows before turning on the power . Be sure this unit is in the standby mode. 1 T urn off the power to th is unit, and while holding do wn STRAIGHT ( EFFECT), press ST ANDBY/ON.
BASIC SETUP 22 The basic setup feature is a useful way to set up your system quickly and with minimal ef fort. y • If you wish to configure the un it manually using more precise adjustments, use the detailed parameters in SOUND MENU (page 56 ) instead of us ing BASIC SETUP.

32 PLAYBACK • When playing a DTS-CD/LD, be sure to set INPUT MODE to DTS. • If the digital output data of the player has been processed in any way , you may not be able to perform DTS decoding e v en if you make a digital connection betw een this unit a nd the player depending on the p layer .
FM/AM TUNING 33 BAS I C OPERA TION There are 2 tuning methods ; automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is ef fecti v e when station signa ls are strong and there is no in terference. ■ A utomatic tuning 1 Rotate INPUT to selec t TUNER as the input source.
34 FM/AM TUNING ■ Manual tuning If the signal from the station you want to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manually tuning into an FM stati on will automatical ly swi tch the tuner to monaural rece ption to increase the signal qualit y .
35 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 3 Press and hold MEMORY (MAN’L/A UTO FM) for more than 3 seconds. The preset number , the MEMOR Y and A UTO indicators flash. After about 5 seconds, automatic presetting starts from the frequency currently displayed and proceeds to ward the higher frequencies.
36 FM/AM TUNING 4 Press PRESET/TUNING/CH l / h to select a preset station number (1 to 8) while the MEMOR Y indicato r is flashing. Press h to select a higher preset station number . Press l to select a l o wer preset stati on number . 5 Press MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UTO FM) on the front panel while the M EMOR Y indicator is flashing.
37 FM/AM TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 2 Press PRESET/TUNING/CH l / h (or PRESET/CH u / d on the remote contr ol) to select a preset station number (1 to 8). The preset group and number appear in the front panel display along with th e station band, frequency and the TUNED indicator lights up.
38 FM/AM TUNING 3 Select preset station “A5” using A/B/C/D/E and PRESET/TUNING/CH l / h . “A5” and the MEMOR Y indi cator flash in the front panel display . 4 Press PRESET/TUNING (EDIT) again. The stations stored at the two pre set assignments are exchanged.
XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING 39 BAS I C OPERA TION XM Satellite Radio is the satell ite radio service with millions of listeners across the U.S., broadcasting live daily .
40 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING ■ Remote contr ol functions The following controls are only av ailable when the unit is in the TUNER mode. T o switch to the T UNER mode, press TUNER to select TUNER as the input source. 1 Numeric buttons (All Channel Sear ch or Category Sear ch mode) Use 1 to 9 and 0 to enter a channel number directly .

42 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING ■ Switching XM information Y ou can display XM information (such as channel number/name, category , or ar tist name/song title) for the channel currently se le cted in the front panel display .

44 XM SATELLITE RADIO TUNING ■ Preset Sear c h mod e Prior to selecting a preset channe l in the Preset Search mode, you should preset XM Sa tellite Radio channels. For details, see “Setting XM Satell ite Radio pres et channels ” on page 45. All preset channe ls (A1 to E8) recalls “001 Previ e w” b y the factory setting .

SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS 49 SOUND FIELD PROGRAM S This unit is equipped with a variety of precise digital de coders that allo w you to enjoy multi-channel playback from almost any sound sour ce (stereo or mu lti-channel).
50 SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS 4 MOVIE THEATER : Spectacle CINEMA DSP process ing. This program creates the extremel y wide sound field of a 70-mm movie theater. It precisely reproduce s th e sou rc e so und in detail, making both t he video and t he sound field incr edibly real.
51 SOUND FIELD PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS SOUND FIELD PROGRAM S Y ou can select from the follo wing sound fields when play i ng music sources, like CD, FM /AM broadcasting, tapes, etc. Pro gram selectio n meth od s v ary depending on sou nd field program types.
ADVANCED OPERATIONS 52 Use this feature to automa tic ally set this unit in the standby mode after a certain amount of time. The sleep timer is useful when you are goi ng to sleep while this unit is playing or recording a s ource. The sleep timer also automatically turns of f an y e xternal components connected to A C OUTLET(S).
53 ADVANCED OPERATIONS AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can adjust the output level of each speaker while listening to a music source. This is also possible when playing sources through th e MUL TI CH INPUT jacks. Please note that this operation will o verri de the le v el adjustments made in “B ASIC SETUP” (pa ge 22) and “SP LEVEL” (page 57).
SET MENU 54 Y ou can use the follo wing parameters in SET MENU to adjust a v ari ety of system settings and customize the way this unit operates. Change the ini tial settings (indicated in bold under ea ch parameter) to reflect the needs of your listening en vironment.
55 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use the remote control to acce ss and adjust each parameter . y Y ou can change SET MENU para meters while the unit is reproducing sound . Y ou cannot c hange some SET MENU parameters while the unit is in either cinema or music ni ght listening mode.
56 SET MENU Use to manually adjust any sp ea ker setting or com pensate for video signal processin g delays when using LCD monitors or projectors. Most of the SOUND MENU parameters are set auto ma tically when you perform “B ASIC SETUP” (see page 22).
57 SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION ■ Speaker le vel B )SP LEVEL Use these settings to manua lly balance the level of each speaker selected in SPEAKER SET (page 56). Choices: –10.0 dB to +10.0 dB • FL adjusts the balance of the front left speaker .

REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 63 AD V ANCED OPERA TION In addition to controlling this unit, the remote control can also operate ot her A/V components made by Y AMAHA and other manufacturers. T o contro l other components, you must se t up remote control with the appropriate remote control codes.
64 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Y ou can control other components b y setting the appropriate remote control c odes. Codes can be set up for each input area. For a comple te list of a v ailable remote control codes, refer to “LIST OF REMO TE CONTR OL CODES” at the end of this manual.
65 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES AD V ANCED OPERA TION Once you set the appropriate remote control codes, you can use this remote to c ontrol your other components. Note that so me buttons ma y not correctly operate the selected component. Use the input selector buttons to select the component you wa nt to operate.
66 REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES Y ou can select the unit you want to operate with the remote control by ente ring the library code. 1 Press CODE SET using a ballpoint pen or similar object. The TRANSMIT indicato r on the remo te control flashes twice. 2 Enter the code number “9991” or “9992” (see the table below).

68 EDITING SOUND FIELD PARAMETERS 5 Repeat steps 2 through 4 as necessar y to change other program parameters. Y ou cannot change parameter values when “MEMOR Y GU ARD” is set to ON. If you want to ch ange the parameter values, set “MEMOR Y GU ARD” to OFF (see page 59).
