GETTING STARTED 3 English INTRODUCTION Please check t hat you recei ved all of the following parts. 1 Press the part and slide the battery compartment cover off. 2 Inser t four supplied batteries (AAA, R03, UM-4) accor ding to the polarity m arkings (+ and –) on the inside of the battery compartment.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 4 1 ST ANDBY/ON T urns on this unit or sets it to the standby mode. When you turn on this unit, you will hear a click a nd there will be a 4 to 5-second delay before this unit can reproduce sound. In standby mo de, this unit consumes a small amount of power in order to receive infrared-signa ls from the remote control.
CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 5 English INTRODUCTION A PHONES (SILENT CINEMA) jack Outputs audio signals for pri v ate listening with headphones. When you connec t headphones, no sign als are output to the OUTPUT jacks or to the speakers. All Dolby Digital and DTS au dio signals are mix ed down to the left and right headphone channels.

SPEAKER SE TUP 11 English PREP ARA TION The speaker layout belo w sho ws the standard ITU-R speaker setting. Y ou can use it to enjoy CINEMA DSP and multi-channel audio sources. Front speaker s (FR and FL) The front speakers are used for the main source sound plus effect sounds.
12 SPEAKER SETUP Be sure to connect the left ch annel (L), right channel (R), “+” (red) and “–” (black) prope rly . If the connections are faulty , no sound will be heard from the speakers, and if the polarity of the speaker connect ions is incorrect, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

26 AUTO SETUP For best results, make sure th e room is as qu iet as possible during the auto setup procedure (YP A O). If there is too much ambient noise, the resu lts may not be satisfactory .

37 English PLAYBACK BAS I C OPERA TION • When you play DTS-encoded CD/LDs with the input mode set to A UT O: – This unit automatically swi tches to the DTS decodi ng mode. The unit remains in DTS mode (and the t indicator may flash) for up to 30 seconds after playback of the DTS source is complete.
TUNING 38 There are 2 tuning methods ; automatic and manual. Automatic tuning is ef fectiv e when station signals are strong and there is no interference. ■ A utomatic tuni ng 1 Rotate INPUT to select TUNER as the input sour ce. 2 Press FM/AM to select the reception band.
39 English TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION ■ Manual tuning If the signal from the station you want to select is weak, tune into it manually . Manuall y tuning into an FM station will automatical ly switch the tuner to monaur al reception to increase the signal qua lity .
40 TUNING 3 Press and hold MEMOR Y (MAN’L/A UT O FM) for more than 3 seconds. The preset number , the MEMOR Y and A UT O indicators flash. After a bout 5 seconds, automatic presetting starts from the frequency currently displayed and proceeds to ward the higher frequencies.
41 English TUNING BAS I C OPERA TION 4 Press PRESET/TUNING l / h to select a preset station number (1 through 8) while the MEMOR Y indicator is flashing. Press h to select a higher preset station number . Press l to select a lower preset station number .

50 ADVANCED OPERATIONS Y ou can use the test tone feature to manually balance your speaker le ve ls. Please note that this operation will o verride the le vel adjustme nts made in “A UTO SETUP” (page 25), “SPEAKER LEVEL” (page 55) and “Manually adjusting speaker le v els” (page 49).
SET MENU 51 English AD V ANCED OPERA TION Y ou can use the follo wing parameters in SET MENU to adjust a v ariety of system settings and customize the way this unit operates. Change the initial settings (indicated in bold under each parameter) to reflect the needs of your listenin g en vironment.
52 SET MENU Use the remote control to access an d adjust each parameter . y Y ou can change SET M ENU parameters while the unit is reproducing sou nd. Y ou cannot change some SET MENU parameters while the unit is in either cinema or music night listening mode.
53 English SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Use to manually adjust an y speaker setti ng or compensate for video signal processing delays when using LCD monitors or projectors. Most of the SOUND MENU parameters are set automatica lly when you run auto setup (see page 25).
54 SET MENU Surround bac k speakers SURR B L/R S P Choices: NONE, SMLx1, SMLx2 , LRGx1, LRGx2 • Select NONE if you do not hav e a surround back speaker . The unit directs all of the surround back channel signal to the surround left and right speakers.
55 English SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Subw oofer phase SUBWOOFER PHASE If bass sounds are lacking or unclear , use this feature to switch the phase of your subw oofer . Choices: NORMAL (normal), REVERSE (reverse) • Select NORMAL if you do not want to re verse the phase of your subwoofer .
56 SET MENU ■ Center graphic equalizer D)CE NTER GEQ Use this feature to adjust the built-in 5-band graphic equalizer for the center channel so that the tonal quality of the center speak er matches that of the front speak ers. Y ou can make adjust ments listening to the currently selected source compone nt or a test tone.
57 English SET MENU AD V ANCED OPERA TION Dialog lift DIALG.LIFT Use to turn on and off the DIALG.LIFT pa rameter (see page 69). This parameter adjust s the height of the front and center channel sounds (d ialog, vocals , etc.) b y assigning some of the front and cent er channel elem ents to the presence speakers.
58 SET MENU For CO AXIAL INPUT jacks 5 and 6 Choices: CD, V -AUX, DT V/CBL, VCR 1, MD/CD-R, D VD, D V R/VCR2 • Y ou cannot select a specific ite m more than on ce for the same type of jack. • When you connect a component to both the CO AXIAL and OPTICAL jacks, priority is give n to the input signals from the COAXIAL jack.

REMOTE CONTROL FEATURES 60 In addition to controlling this unit, th e remote control can also operate other A/V compone nts made by Y AMAHA and other manufacturers. T o contro l other components, you must set up remote c ontrol with the appropriate manufacturer codes.

EDITING SOUND FIELD PARAMETERS 64 What really crea tes the rich, full tones of a li ve instru ment are the multi ple reflections from the walls of the room. In addition to making the sound “live”, these reflections enable us to tell where the player is si tuated, and the size and shape of the room in which we are sitting.

67 English SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ADDITIONAL INFORMA TION ■ LIVENESS Function: This para meter adjusts the reflec tivity of the virtual walls in the ha ll by changing the rate at which the early reflec tions decay .
68 SOUND FIELD PARAMETER DESCRIPTIONS ■ REV .TIME (Re verberation time) Function: This parameter adjusts the am ount of time it takes for the dense, subsequent rev erberation sound to decay by 60 dB (at 1 kHz). This changes the apparent size of the acoustic en vironment ov er an extremely wide range.
