Connections 25 En Preparation The use of subwoofers with built-in amplif ie rs, such as the Y amaha Active Serv o Proc essing Subwoofer System, is ef fectiv e not o nly for reinforcing bass frequencie.
Connec tions 26 En The presence speakers supplement the sound from the front and su rround back speakers with ex tra ambient ef fects produced by the sound field progr ams (see page 54). Presence speakers function more ef fective ly when the CINEMA DSP HD³ mode is acti v e (see page 60).
Connections 27 En Preparation 1 Remove appr oximately 10 mm (0.4 in) of insulation from the end of eac h speaker cable and then twist the exposed wires of the cable together to prevent short circuits. 2 Loosen the knob. 3 Inser t one bare wir e into th e hole on the side of each terminal.
Connec tions 28 En ■ Aud i o j a cks This unit has three types of audi o jacks. Connection depends on the av ailability of audio jack s on your other components. A UDIO ja cks For con ventional analog audio signals transmitted via left and right analog audio cables.
Connections 29 En Preparation ■ A udio signal flow • 2-channel as well as mul ti-channe l PCM, Dolby Digital and DTS signals input at the HDMI input jacks can be output at the HDMI OUT jacks only when “Support Audio” is set to “Other” (see page 94).

Ho wev er , you may hear less noise withou t the connection to the GND terminal for some turntabl es. • The PHONO jacks are only compa tible with a turntable with an MM or a high-output MC cartridge.
Connections 35 En Preparation ■ Connecting e xternal amplifier s This unit has more than enough power for any home use. Ho wever , if you want to use e xternal am plif iers, connect the external amplifi ers to the PRE OUT jacks. Each PRE OUT jack outputs th e same channel signals as the corresponding SPEAKERS terminals.
Connec tions 36 En ■ Connecting a Y amaha iPod universa l dock This unit is equipped with the DOCK terminal on t he rear panel t hat allows you to connect a Y amaha iP od univ e rsal dock (such as the YDS-10, sold separately) wher e you can station your iPod and control playback of your iPod usi ng the supplied re mote control.
Connections 37 En Preparation T o connect this unit to your network, plug one end of a network cable (CA T -5 or higher straight cable) into the NETWORK port on this unit, and plug the other end into one of the LAN ports on your router that supports the DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) se rv e r function.

Basic Operation 61 En Basic Operation Use the Pure Direct mode to enjoy the pure fidelity sound of the selected source . When the Pure Direct mode is acti vated, this unit plays back the selected source wi th the least circuitry . Press C PURE DIR ECT (or M PURE DIRECT ) to turn on or off the Pure Di rect mode.
