CONTROLS AND FUNCTIONS 3 INTRODUCTION ■ AX-497 ■ AX-397 1 PO WER Press inward to the ON positi on to provide this unit with power supply from the AC wall outlet. In this state, you can turn on this unit or set it to the standby mode by pressing ST ANDBY/ON.

PLAYING AND RECORDING 11 OPERA TION As for AX-397 only , if the T A PE MONITOR ind icator on the front panel lights up when you listen to a source, press T APE MONITOR on the front panel to turn off the T APE MONIT OR function (the T APE MONITOR indicator turns of f as a result).
12 PLAYING AND RECORDING 7 Adjust the tonal qu ality by using the BASS, TREBLE, B ALANCE an d LOUDNESS controls or the CD/D VD DIRECT AMP switch on the front panel. As for AX-497 only , you ca n also adjust the tonal quality by using PURE DIRECT on the front panel.
13 PLAYING AND RECORDING OPERA TION ■ Adjusting the BALANCE cont rol Adjusts the sound output bala nce of the left and right speakers to compensate fo r sound imbalance caused by speaker locations or lis tening room conditions.
14 PLAYING AND RECORDING • The VOLUME, BASS, TREBL E, BALANCE and LOUDNESS controls and the CD/DVD D IRECT AMP switch (and the PUR E DIRECT switc h for AX-497 only) have no effect on the source being recorded. • Check the copyright laws in your country to record from records, CDs, radio, etc.
15 PLAYING AND RECORDING OPERA TION ■ AX-397 1 Play the sourc e . 2 Rotate the INPUT select or on the front panel (or press one of the input selector buttons on the remote control) to select the input sour ce yo u want to listen to. Y ou cannot select any input source while the T APE MONITOR indicator on the front panel lights up.

If the problem y ou are experiencing is not listed below or if the instructions below do not help, set this unit to the standby mode, disconnect the power co rd, and contact the nearest authorized Y AMAHA dealer or service center .
