ix About the media pack This manual describes how to install the user software for the D ocuColor Color Ser ver TM and set up printing from Apple ® Macintosh ® and Microsoft ® Windows ® computers. F or information on setting up network servers and clients to use the DocuColor, see the Administr ator Guide .
x Introduction Sy stem requir ements f or Macintosh users F or installation of user software, you need a CD-R OM drive. This can be either an internal CD-R OM drive in your computer or an external drive with the appropriate cable and software to run on your computer .
xi System r equirements f or UNIX users • T o print from computers running Windo ws NT 3.51 or 4.0, you can use the P ostScript driver delivered with the operating system, and the DocuColor PPD file provided with the U ser Software. Networking r equir ements F or network use with W indows 3.
xii Introduction U ser softw ar e The U ser Software CD includes: Downloader TM Enables you to print P ostScript and Encapsulated P ostScript files directly to the DocuColor without using the application in which they were cr eated. The Downloader also enables y ou to manage the printer fonts installed on the DocuColor.
1 V erifying the netw ork The general steps for setting up printing from a Macintosh computer ar e: • V erify the network is configured for IPX printing. • Install the Adobe P ostScript Printer Driv er (version 8.5.1 supports P ostScript 3). • Set up the DocuColor in the Chooser .
2 Setting up printing from a Macintosh computer If you operate the DocuColor in a copy shop , quick print shop, or service bureau, you might want to provide copies of the printer driv er , printer description files, and relevant documentation to customers.
3 Installation ov erview This chapter describes installing utilities for computers running Windo ws 95 and Windows NT 4.0, and setting up printing for Windows 3.

Insert the User So ftwar e CD in your computer . 2. In the NT File Manager , double-click the icon for the CD-ROM to display its contents.
5 Installing Window s utilities 6. In the Softw are dialog bo x, select Utilities and click Next. 7. Specify the name of the Pr ogram F older in which to install the utilities, or click Ne xt to use the default name .
6 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 8. Specify the network type . Select IPX/SPX if y ou ar e using Window s 95; select TCP/IP if you ar e using Window s NT . N OTE : The network protocol you choose her e will become the default when you configure the utilities.
7 Installing Window s utilities 10. If you ar e prompted, br ow se to the location of the NET_WSCK.INI file that has been customized for y our site . If you do not have a customized NET_WSCK.INI file, y ou can use the default file. If you use the default file, make sure that you configur e the Chooser list before y ou try to use the utilities.
8 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer • If you ar e using TCP/IP , set up a Domain Name Server (DNS) f or the IP address o f the DocuColor in the printcap file . If your network does not support DNS servers, edit the HOSTS file in your WINDO WS director y and insert an IP address for the DocuColor.
9 Installing Window s utilities 3. In the Add Ne w Server dialog bo x, enter a Server Name . The Server N ame is indicated in the Server Setup section of the Configuration page. The server name is the name you entered for Server Name on the DocuColor Contr ol P anel if you are using IPX/SPX (Windo ws 95).

11 Installing Window s utilities 7. Click OK. The server appears in the Chooser list of available servers. 8. T o end the configur ation process and begin using the utility , click OK. N OTE : Configuring the Chooser list also customizes the NET_WSCK.
12 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 3. In the Add Ne w Server dialog bo x, enter a DNS Name (or IP address) and a de vice name in the New De vice box. The server name is either the DNS name or the IP address for a DocuColor server when you are using TCP/IP with Windows NT .

15 Installing Window s utilities Setting up the DocuColor as a P ostScript printer T o set up the DocuColor as a P ostScript printer , you need a P ostScript printer driver and the appropriate DocuColor printer description files. P rinter drivers and procedures vary across Windo ws versions.
16 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 8. Once the printer driver has been installed, click Restart to r estart Wind ows. The Adobe P ostScript Printers dialog bo x appears when Windo ws restarts. If you do not see it, double-click the Adobe P ostScript Printers icon in the Windows P rogram Manager Control P anel.
17 Installing Window s utilities 3. Click Set As Def ault Printer . The DocuColor appears in the Default P rinter area of the P rinters window . Selecting a printer port with Window s 3.1x When you install a printer , Windo ws assigns it to a default printer port.

F or parallel printing, select the port (LPT1, LPT2, or LPT3) connected to your parallel cable. T o print to a file, select FILE. Printing to a file is useful if the D ocuColor is off-site.
19 Installing Window s utilities 3. From the Netw ork menu, choose Nov ell NetW are (shell v ersion 3.26 and abo ve) or (shell ver sion 4.0 and abov e). 4. Click OK. When prompted, r estart Wind ows. 5. In the Main group, double-click Contr ol P anel, and then double-click Printers .
20 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 9. In the A vailable queues list bo x, select the server and queue name that corr espond to the printer . 10. Click the Connect button and then click the Close b utton. The Connect dialog box is displayed with the network path to the printer .
21 Installing Window s utilities T O INSTALL THE D OCU C OLOR WITH THE A DOBE P OST S CRIPT P RINTER D RIVER AND W INDOWS 95: 1. Print a copy o f the Configuration page f or your DocuColor.

In your computer’ s BIOS settings, set P ar allel Port Mode to Compatible . T o access the BIOS settings, restart the computer and press the key indicated on your monitor as soon as the computer starts up.
23 Installing Window s utilities 4. Click Spool Settings. 5. Select Disable bi-directional support f or this printer . 6. Select either Spool print jobs so progr am finishes printing faster or Print dir ectly to the printer .

29 Installing Window s utilities 6. In the Property list, click Fr ame Type and select the Fr ame Type that corr esponds to the one set during DocuColor Control P anel Setup. P rint the Configuration page from the Control P anel to see the F rame T ype if necessary .
30 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer T O SET UP IPX (N OVELL ) PRINTING WITH W INDOWS 95: 1. Click the Start button, point to Settings , and then click Printers . 2. Click the icon for the printer and choose Pr operties from the File menu.
31 Installing Window s utilities T o set up printing to a second queue, you must install a new printer for each queue and repeat the following pr ocedures. Give each printer a descriptiv e name during printer driver installation, such as Astro-Print or Astro-Direct , so y ou can easily identify printers.
32 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 5. Expand the lev els to locate your printer and the queue y ou want to print to. The printer name you are bro wsing for is the WINS N ame Server . Refer to the Configuration page for this information.
33 Installing Window s utilities Setting up printing with Window s NT 3.51 T o set up Windo ws NT printing, install the Windo ws NT P ostScript printer driver and configure printing for your network type. N ote that printer files support the Intel ® version of W indows NT .

The Select Driv er dialog box displays the name of the printer(s) for which there are printer description files on the disk. 4. Select the printer description file for y our device and click OK.
35 Installing Window s utilities 6. Enter a name for the DocuColor in the Printer Name bo x in the Create Printer dialog box, and then click OK. The DocuColor model name is displayed in the D river box. 7. When the P ostScript Printer Setup dialog box appear s, click OK.

Copy the printer description file and then connect the printer to a port or a netw ork connection. 37 Installing Window s utilities T O SET UP TCP/IP AND LPR PRINTING FOR W INDOWS NT W ORKSTATION : 1. In the Main group, double-click the Print Manager icon. 2. With the DocuColor window activ e , choose Properties fr om the Printer menu. 3. In the Print to list, scroll to Other .
38 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 8. Enter or verify the name o f the printer in the Printer Name box in the Cr eate Printer dialog, and then click OK. 9. Click OK. Y ou have configured your workstation to use TCP/IP to communicate with the printer .
39 Installing Window s utilities 3. Double-click Add Printer . “M y Computer” is available if y ou logged in to a computer on which you have Administrator privileges. If it is not available, y ou can add a network printer . The procedure is similar to adding a port (see page 45).
40 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 6. In the dialog box displaying lists o f manufactur ers and printer s, click Have Disk. The Install F rom D isk dialog box prompts you for the disk. 7. Type the name o f the CD-ROM drive (f or ex ample, D:) and click B rowse.

42 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer If this is the first P ostScript printer installed on your system, you may need to eject the U ser Software CD and insert the W indows NT Installation CD to locate a PSCRIPT .DLL file. The path on the W indows CD is i386.

44 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer Completing the Window s NT 4.0 TCP/IP connection Complete the setup for the T CP/IP and lpr connection as follows: • P repare the D ocuColor to accept print jobs using T CP/IP and lpr protocols. • Configure the workstation for the TCP/IP connection.
45 Installing Window s utilities T O SET UP TCP/IP AND LPR PRINTING FOR W INDOWS NT 4.0: 1. Open the Printer Properties dialog bo x for the DocuColor. Click P orts to display the P orts property sheet. 2. Click Add P ort. The available port types are displayed.
46 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 4. In the “ A dd LPR compatible printer” dialog box, enter the IP addr ess of the DocuColor. If your network uses D omain N ame Services (DNS), enter the DNS name assigned to the DocuColor instead of the IP address.
47 Installing Window s utilities Completing the Window s NT 4.0 IPX (Nov ell) connection Complete the setup for the IPX (N ovell) connection as follo ws: • Configure the N ov ell network and file server for handling DocuColor print jobs. The file server should be configured with a print server and print connection for the DocuColor.
48 Installing user softw are on a Windo ws computer 4. Double-click the print connection defined for the DocuColor. If the N etW are server does not have a suitable driver for the DocuColor you may be asked if you want to set up the printer on your workstation.
49 Copying the PPD f or Adobe P ageMak er 10. Click the General pr operty sheet and click Print T est P age . The DocuColor polls the N etW are server for print jobs in the print connection defined for the DocuColor.
51 Setting up the W ebT ools The W ebT ools allow you to manage the DocuColor remotely fr om the Internet or from your company ’ s intranet. The DocuColor has its own home page, fr om which you can select from a variety of functions including S tatus, W ebSpooler , W ebLink, and Installer .
52 W ebT ools T O SET UP W EB T OOLS ON EACH USER ’ S WORKSTATION : 1. Enable TCP/IP netw orking. 2. Make sur e the work station has a valid, unique IP addr ess. 3.
