6 SECTION 2: SLOPE GAUGE Use this pag e as a guide to de termine s lopes wher e you may no t operate sa fely. Do not operate your lawn mower on such sl opes. KEEP HANDS AND FEET AWAY FROM ROTATI NG PARTS. REMOVE OBJECTS T HAT CAN BE T HROWN BY THE BLADE IN ANY DIRECTION.

8 Electric P TO ( P owe r T ake-Off) Knob The PTO s witch is lo cated on the right con trol panel and it is use d to control the en gageme nt of the cutting blades. W hen the knob is up, the cu tting blades are engaged. Wh en the kno b is down, the c utting blade s are dise ngaged.
9 • Battery: Th e BATTERY indicato r light will illumin ate any time th e igniti on key is in the ON position and the engine is not running. If i t ill umina tes w hile the en gine is runn ing, then the batt ery is in ne ed of a char ge. Refer t o the MAINTENANCE section of th is man ual for the proper batter y chargin g procedu re.
10 SECTION 4: OPERATING YOUR Z-SERIES Gas and Oil Fill-Up Servi ce the engine with gasoli ne and oil as inst ructe d in the separ ate engine man ual packe d with you r mower. Read ins truc tions caref ully. IMPORT ANT : Your u nit is s hipped with oi l; howev er, you MUST che ck the oil lev el before ope ratin g.
11 • If safe for op eration, walk the slop e and l ook for hazards su ch as roc ks, mounds , ruts, stu mps, or other i rregular ities. • After remo ving de bris and i dentifyin g irregu laritie s of the slope, back the Z-Ser ies up the steepes t slope you intend to work.
12 Fig ure 10 SECTION 5: MAKING ADJUSTMENTS Adjusting the Mower Deck Height • To push or pull t he lift leve r, depres s and hold the button. Refer to Figure 5. • Move the ha ndle up/down to the desire d location . • Rele ase button at t he de sired posit ion.
13 Checking the Brake Adjustment • Position th e Z-Serie s on a level surfac e and move the throttl e lever to the slo west posit ion (turtle) . • Stop the eng ine, remov e the key from the ignition, and enga ge the parking brake. • Relea se both hydrau lic rel ief lever s.
14 • Remove bo lts that sec ure linkage to upper cont rol handles an d lower con trol arms . The shock absorbe rs should r emain conn ected to linkag e. See Figu re 12. 16 Checking Hydraulic Oil Check the oi l leve l of hydrau lic units only when the engine is OF F. During in itial bre ak-in (first five hours of ope ratio n), check oi l before eac h use and afte r every hour of operatio n. During norma l operati on, check oil after 50 hour s of operatio n.
17 • Slide the boot cove r all the way up ( toward t he driv e handles) to acces s the drive hand le bolt s. • Remove dr ive handle bo lts, driv e handles, and rubber boot. • Remove the four bolts sec uring the reta ining plate to the contr ol tower cov er.
18 • Caref ully pull t he be lt up and o ver th e ri ght hydrostati c coolin g fan and the n lift up and ove r the left hydr ostatic cool ing fan. • Pull the dr ive belt ou t of the un it. Installing Drive Belt • Set the par king bra ke and inse rt drive belt up and over the le ft and right hydo static cooling fans.
