01 Safety Seat belts 01 18 General information Adjusting the seat belt Seat belts should always be worn by all occu- pants of your vehicle. Children should be prop- erly restrained, using an infant, car, or booster seat determined by age, weight and height.
01 Safety Seat belts 01 `` 19 Seat belt maintenance Check periodically that the seat belts are in good condition. Use water and a mild deter- gent for cleaning. Check seat belt mechanism function as follows: attach the seat belt and pull rapidly on the strap.
01 Safety Seat belts 01 20 • It provides information about which seat belts are fastened in the rear seat. A mes- sage will appear in the information display when a belt is being used. This message will disappear after approximately 6 sec- onds or can be erased by pressing the READ button on the left steering wheel lever.

01 Safety Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) 01 24 NOTE • Deployment of front airbags occurs only one time during an accident. In a colli- sion where deployment occurs, the air- bags and seat belt pretensioners acti- vate. Some noise occurs and a small amount of powder is released.

01 Safety Child safety 01 36 Children should be seated safely Volvo recommends the proper use of restraint systems for all occupants including children. Remember that, regardless of age and size, a child should always be properly restrained in a vehicle.
01 Safety Child safety 01 37 WARNING • Do not use child safety seats or child booster cushions/backrests in the front passenger's seat. We also recommend that children under 4 feet 7 inches (140 cm) in height who have outgrown these devices sit in the rear seat with the seat belt fastened.
01 Safety Child restraint systems 01 38 Child restraints G022840 Infant seat There are three main types of child restraint systems: infant seats, convertible seats, and booster cushions. They are classified accord- ing to the child's age and size.
01 Safety Child restraint systems 01 39 WARNING • When not in use, keep the child restraint system secured or remove it from the passenger compartment to help pre- vent it from injuring passengers in the event of a sudden stop or collision.

01 Safety ISOFIX/LATCH lower anchors 01 45 Using the ISOFIX/LATCH lower child seat anchors Lower anchors for ISOFIX/LATCH-equipped child seats are located in the rear, outboard seats, hidden below the backrest cushions. Symbols on the seat back upholstery mark the anchor positions as shown.
01 Safety Top tether anchors 01 46 Child restraint anchorages Your Volvo is equipped with child restraint top tether anchorages in the rear seat. They are located on the rear side of the backrests. Securing a child seat 1. Place the child restraint on the rear seat.
01 Safety Child restraint registration and recalls 01 47 Registering a child restraint Child restraints could be recalled for safety reasons. You must register your child restraint to be reached in a recall. To stay informed about child safety seat recalls, be sure to fill out and return the registration card that comes with new child restraints.

Integrated two-stage booster cushion* 1 Volvo's optional integrated booster cushions are located in the outboard seating positions. These booster cushions have been specially designed to help safeguard children in the rear seat.

02 Locks and alarm Remote key and key blade 02 54 Introduction Two remote keys or optional Personal Car Communicators (PCC) are provided with your vehicle. They enable you to unlock the doors and tailgate, and also function as ignition keys to start the vehicle or operate electrical com- ponents.

The gear selector can be moved freely between the Geartronic (manual shifting) and Drive ( D ) positions while driving.
03 Your driving environment Transmission 03 112 Geartronic–manual shifting Geartronic allows you to manually shift among your vehicle's six forward speeds. Geartronic can be selected at any time. • To access the manual shifting position from Drive ( D ), move the gear selector to the right (to the area marked M in the illus- tration.
03 Your driving environment Transmission 03 113 Insert the key blade into the opening. Press the key blade down as far as possible and keep it held down. Move the gear selector from the P position. For information on the key blade, see page 58. Please be aware that overriding the shiftlock system does not release the steering wheel lock.
03 Your driving environment Brakes 03 114 Brake system The brake system is a hydraulic system con- sisting of two separate brake circuits. If a prob- lem should occur in one of these circuits, it is still possible to stop the vehicle with the other brake circuit.
03 Your driving environment Brakes 03 115 Anti-lock braking system The Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) helps to improve vehicle control (stopping and steering) during severe braking conditions by limiting brake lockup.
03 Your driving environment Parking brake 03 116 Electric parking brake An electric parking brake has the same func- tion as a manual parking brake. NOTE • A faint sound from the parking brake's electric motor can be heard when the parking brake is being applied.
