Ensure that all passengers use their seatbelts. It is important that the se atbelt lies against the body so it can pr ovide maximu m protec- tion.
01 Safety 13 Safety in the passenger compar tm ent 01 Seatbelts and pr egnancy The seatbelt should always be worn during pregnancy. But it is cr ucial that it be worn in the correct way. The diago nal section should wrap over the shoulder then be routed be- tween the breasts and to the side of the a b- domen.

Correct seating position For the best possible pr otection, the drive r and front seat passenger should sit in the centre of the seat with as little space as pos- sible between the head and the hea d re- straint.

Do not dr ive with de- ployed airbags. • Let an authorised Volvo w orkshop replace components in the car’s safety system.

They are used to star t the car and for locki ng and unlocking. More remote control keys can be ordered – up to six can be pr ogrammed and used fo r the same car.

Follow t he shifting pattern indicated. For the best possible fu el economy, use the highest gear possible as often as possible .

03 Your driving environment 93 Gearbo x es 03 Gear tronic* – manual gear positions (M) The driver can also change gear manually using the Geartronic automatic gearbox. The car engine-brakes when the acce lerator pedal is released. Manual gearshift mode is obtained by moving the lever from position D to th e right-hand end position at M .
03 Your driving environment 94 Gearbox es 03 Automatic g ear selecto r inhibitor The automatic gearbo x has special safety systems: Keylock To remove the remote control key fro m the ignition switch, the gea r selector must be in the P position. The remote control key is locked in all other pos itions.
03 Your driving environment 95 All Wheel Dri ve – A WD (All Wheel Dr ive)* 03 All Wheel Dri ve is alw ays engaged All Wheel Drive m eans that the car is dri ving on all four wheels at the same time. The power is automa tically distributed between the front and rear wheels.
03 Your driving environment 96 Foot brak e 03 General The car is equipped with two br ake circuits. If one brake circuit is da maged then this will mean that the brakes engag e at a deeper level and harder pressu re on the pedal is needed to produce the nor mal braking effect.
03 Your driving environment 97 Hill Descent Control (HDC) 03 General 1 HDC can be compared t o an automatic engine brake. When you release the accelera- tor on downhill gradient s the car is normally braked by means of the engine striving fo r low engine idling speeds, so -called engine brak- ing.
03 Your driving environment 98 Par ki n g br a ke 03 Parking brak e, electric* An electric parking brake has the same appli- cations as a manual parking brake, e.g. when starting uphill. Fun c t io n A faint electric moto r noise can be heard when the parking brake is being applied.

04 Comfort and driving pleasure 109 Climate control 04 General Air conditioning The car is equipped with Electronic Climate Control (ECC) or Electr onic Temperature Control (ETC). T he climate contr ol system cools or heats as well as dehumidifies the air in the passenger compartm ent.
