B EFORE Y OU B EGIN 5 Installation Installation is a quick, four-step process: 1. Assemble the scanner 2. Install the software 3. Connect the power supply 4.
6 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER T o assemble the scanner: 1. Remo ve all shipping tape from th e scanner and f rom the P aper T ray . 2. Slide the tray in so the pins seat into the holes on the ADF .
S TEP 1: A SSEMBLE THE S CANNER 7 3. Carefully remo ve a ny protective foam from the ADF co ver release, then press the r elease and open the A utomatic Document F eeder cov er . 4. Carefully r emove any foam particle s that may have gotten inside the document feeder , and close the cover .
8 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 6. Plug the ADF cable into the ADF port on the back of the scanner . Make sure the cable is plugged in secur ely . The ADF will not work if the cabl e is loos e or not plugged in. 7. P ush the locking tab down to the unlocked position.
S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 9 S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE T o install the softwar e: 1. S tart Microsoft Windo ws and make sure no other applications ar e running . 2. Insert Disc 1 into your computer ’ s CD-R OM drive. The Installation menu automatically opens.

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 11 5. Click Install N o w . 6. The Select Language windo w opens. Click the drop-do wn menu arrow and s elect the language you want to use. Click OK . The W elcome to the OneT ouch 4.0 Setup Wizar d opens. 7. Click Nex t .

S TEP 2: I NSTALL THE S OFTWARE 13 ■ TW AIN only —T he TW AIN driver is installed without the OneT ouch 4.0 software or the ISIS driver . Y ou can only scan using the Visioneer P atriot 680 TW AIN interface or WIA (Windows XP only ) interface from a scanning application.

If you are installing the scanner on a Windows 2000 computer: During the software installation, this “Digital S ignature N ot F ound” message may appear several times.

S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 17 S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER The Visioneer P atriot 680 scanner co nnects to any available USB port. Check your computer ’ s manual for USB port locations. 1. Remo ve any protective tape from the USB cable.
18 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 3. T urn on the power swit ch, located on the back of the scanner to the left of the power port. The status light comes on and flashe s indicating that the scanner is receiving po wer . If you are using W indows XP S ervice P ack 2, and have plugged the USB cable into a USB 1.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 19 4. Y our computer then recognizes th at a s canner has been plugged into the USB port and automatically load s the appropriate software to run the scanner . Do not proceed until you r eceive a message that your computer has found the new har dwar e, or updated the driver database.
20 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 7. Click Close on the I nstallation Complete window to close and exit the software installer . If you selected OmniP age Pr o for installation, a window tells you to insert the second CD to install it.
S TEP 4: C ONNECT THE USB C ABLE AND T URN ON THE P OWER 21 To i n s t a l l O m n i P a g e P r o : 1. Click Exit Disc 1 and remove Disc 1 from the CD-R OM drive. 2. Insert Disc 2 into the CD-R OM drive. The OmniP age Pro I nstallation menu opens au tomatically .

T o install the additional applications: 1. Return to the I nstallation wi ndow and select the additional applications you want to install on your computer .

The U ser Guides are in A dobe ® Acrob at ® PDF format. The CD also includes a free copy of Acr obat ® Rea de r ® in case your computer does not have it alr eady installed.

L OAD AND S CAN D OCUMENTS 27 L OAD AND S CAN D OCUMENTS When you press either the Simplex or D uplex button, documents are scanned using the scan settings in dicated by the LED number . The scanned images are then se nt to a software application (known as the Destination Application) or to a storage folder on your computer .
28 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 2. Check the LED number to make sure you are using the scan setting you want. T o choose a new scan setting, press the U p or Down Destination Selector buttons. 3. T o scan a one-sided document, press the Simp lex button.
L OAD AND S CAN D OCUMENTS 29 T o Cancel scanning, click the Ca nce l button. T o pause the scanning, click the Pa u s e button. It will change to a Continue button. P ut the page back into the scanner and click Continue to resume scanning. No t e : Y our scanner comes with factory-preset OneT ouch button settings.

Open the scanner lid and place the page on the scanner glass, face down. 3. Align the paper with the arro ws on the scanner for the size of paper you are using.

Wh en the process finishes, the scanned images appear in the Dest ination A pplication or are stored in a folder , just as if you scanned with the Simplex or D uplex scanner buttons.

T o configure the list of available applications, click the Option s tab at the top of the dialog box and select the desir ed options.

Click in the Color document handling settings boxes for the options you want.

If you are using A OL on your computer , and the folder name for AOL is incorre ct, click the Bro wse b utton and find the correct AOL fo lde r . F or scanned images to be auto-attached to a blank email address, you must have the specific folde r location AOL uses to find the attachments.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 53 S ELECTING P AGE F ORMAT O PTIONS The P age F ormat options that you sele ct determines the file format of the scanned document. Appropriate page format options and file types are available for the type of D estination Application select ed for the button.
54 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE The PDF format is often used to cr eate images of text pages. Y ou may want to select PDF as the page format when scanning text pages that do not require OCR processing or othe r processing. The PDF format is also used to put multi-page docume nts on w eb sites as pdf-r eadable files.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 55 T EXT F ORMATS Selecting the text format option also selects OCR processing as an automatic step for scanning. Therefor e, when you scan a document with the text format selected, the text portions of the document are automatically converted to editable text.
56 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE T o select a file type for the text format: 1. Sele ct the Destina tion Applic ation. 2. Right-cl ick on the tex t format icon. A menu opens. The following figur e shows samples for differe nt formats.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 57 Comma Delimited —The .csv file format; used for database or spreadsheet data with fie lds separated by commas. When the document is converted into editable text by the OCR software , the fields are main tained so you can c opy and paste them to a database or spreadsheet application.
58 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE R ENAMING A O NE T OUCH B UTTON The OneT ouch buttons have names that identify their pre-set functions, such as OCR and PDF , bu t you can edit the names. T o change the button names: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties windo w .
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 59 T o select options: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties window and click the Options tab . 2. Click the menu arro w and choose the button for new options. 3. Select button opt ions as described below . Sho w All Destinations —This option selects all the Destination Application categories.

C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 61 F or exampl e, if you scan a pictur e to an email application, the scanned image is saved as a temporary file, then attached to the email, and the email is sent. B ut because you already have the original picture, you may not want to also save a permanent file of that image as well.
62 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE N ote that if the B utton selected at the top of the dialog box is set to Tr a n s f e r t o S t o r a g e as the Destination Application, and the type of application is Storage and CD-R/W , (such as Bu tton 7), the location in this section is where your scanned documents are stored.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 63 C REATING A N EW S CAN C ONFIGURATION The scan configurations are where you select the scanning r esolution, brightness, mode (color , black&white, or gra yscale), and a number of other settings. N ote the lock icon on the preset configurations.
64 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE buttons set for text editing appl ications. Thus, you can create specific sets of scan configuratio ns for specific functions and they are listed only when appropriate.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 65 G rayScale to scan items such as documents containing drawings or black and white photographs. The scanning produces an image of up to 256 shades of gray . Color to scan color photographs and other color items.
66 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Siz e —Click St a nd a rd , clic k the menu arrow and choose a page size from the list, or click Cu s t om and enter the horizontal and vertical page dimensions in the boxes. The maximum siz e is 8.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 67 Invert Ima ge —Only available for Black&White M ode, this option reverses the black and whites of an image. Dup le x —Scan both sides of the page. If this option is not selected, the scanner will scan th e front side of the page only .
68 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Color F ilter —Color filter is the ability of yo ur scanner to automatically remo ve a color from a scanned item. F or example, if you ar e scanning a letter with a red watermark, you can choose to filter out the r ed so the scanned letter just sho ws the text and not the red watermark .

72 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING TO M ULTIPLE F OLDERS When archiving documents with the T ransfer to Storage option, you can scan them to multiple folders.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 73 5. Click the Scan Settings , P a ge Settings , and Advanced S ettings tabs, and select the settings y ou want. T o help you remember which folder it is, give the new configuration a name that indicates the folder name, such as “S torage for Business Receipts.
74 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 9. Click OK . The selected folder will no w be set as the Storage Location, such as “Business Receipts.” 10. Click Apply . The new configuration is now listed as a T ransfer to S torage configuration.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 75 13. N ow click the arr ow buttons to se lect a scanner button for each ne w configuration. Click Apply to set that button for that configuration. The following examples sho w that buttons 7 and 8 have been set to scan to each of the new configurations.
76 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE Scan to multiple storage folders: 1. Insert the documents you want to scan to multiple storage folders. 2. P ress t he Destination Se lector buttons on the scanner to get to one of the buttons set up for scanning to storage.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 77 E DITING OR D ELETING S CAN C ONFIGURATIONS T o edit or delete a scan configuration: 1. Open the OneT ouch P roperties windo w . 2. Select the s can configuration you want to edit or delete. 3. T o delete the configuration, click the Delete button.
78 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE 4. T o edit the configuration, click the Edit button. The Scan Configuration P roperties dialog box opens for that configuration. Y ou can make changes to a configuration, but for the changes to be saved, the configuration must fi rst be unlocked.

Right-click on Configure Befor e Scan and choose an interface to use for configuring before scanning. Some interface options may not be av ailable, based on the drivers you installed for your scanner .
80 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE S CANNING WITH O PTICAL C HARACTER R ECOGNITION (OCR) Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is like a printer in reverse. Instead of printing what ’ s on the scr een onto paper , OCR converts text and numbers on a scanned page into editable text and numbers.
C ONFIGURING THE O NE T OUCH B UTTONS 81 T o scan with OCR: 1. T o scan using the buttons on the scanner , press the Destination Selector until the LED is at 6, then pr ess the Simp le x or Dupl ex button.

Languages in Document —Select the language(s) in the documents to be scanned. These are the languages that will be recognized during the OCR process.

The list on the right are the fonts that will be used by the OCR process to r ecognize the text in your document s.
86 V ISIONEER P ATRIO T 680 S CANNER U SER ’ S G UIDE When bringing in a new image —Click the menu arrow and select where you want new pages added to y our current document. The choices are After last page , After curr ent page , Before c urrent page , and Before first page .
