Intr oducing The T elephone 1.1 Using This Guide This user’ s guide describes your Comdial Impact telephone and tells you ho w to use it. The sections in this introductory chapter help you become familiar with your telephone’ s controls and indicators.

1.3 Using Y o ur Speakerphone On the speakerphone-equipped models, the microphone and loudspeak er are farther a way from you than when you use a handset.
Speakerp hone User Guidelines – Both parties cannot talk at the same time. Y ou must wait for silence out of your loudspeaker before talking. Y ou must stop talking to hear the other party . – Background noise may pre v ent the sound-acti v ated switches from operating properly .

1.4 Knowing Y our T elephone’ s Functions Y our telephone provides man y versatile features for your use. These features are explained in terms of what the y allo w you to do. Refer to sectio n 1.5, Under standing What The Lights Mean , for information about the lights associated with your telephone’ s buttons.
Speaker (not a vailable on 8112N and 8212N) • Sounds distant party’ s v oice. • Sounds ringing and call-in-progress tones. Speaker Button (not a v ailable on 8112N and 8212N) • T urns your speaker on or of f. • Disconnects a call when you are on a handsfree call.
1.5 Understanding What the Lights Mean The lights (LEDs) on your telephone indicate the status of lines, features, and intercom. Next to a Direct Station Sele ct (DSS)/ Busy Lamp Field (BLF) button: • Steady red = station is in use. • Flashing red = station is r ecei ving a call.
Abov e the SPEAKER butt on: • On steady (with telephone on hook and busy) = speakerphone mode is acti v e. • On steady (with telephone on hook and idle) = background music is turned on. • Flashing = feature viewing and programming is in progress.
1.6 Adjusting The T elephone P edestal (Models 8212S and 8212N only) Y our telephone has an adjustable pedestal to allow you to select the most comfortable viewing ang le. When you recei ve the telephone, the pedestal is in its lowest position—flush against the pedestal.

Ans wering Calls 2.1 Answering Outside Calls A call that rings on an outside line will sound long, single-tone b ursts and will light the l ine status light.
2.3 Answering Subdued Off-Hook V oice A nnouncement (SOHV A) Calls Y our installer can set your speakerphone to recei v e a Subdued Of f-Hook V oice Announcement (SOHV A). This feature allows an intercom caller to break into your call by making an announcement through your handset recei v er .
Making Calls 3.1 M aking C alls The 8212N and 8112N telepho nes require that you lift the handset before performing any operations with the telephone. When using the 8212S, 8112S, and 8124S, ho we v er , y ou may do one of three things in order to use the telephone: lift the handset, press the INTERCOM button, or press the SPEAKER button.
• To automatic ally dial a speed dial number stored a t one of the programmable buttons on your station (8112N and 8212N), 1. Lift handset and press TA P .
3.3 Dialing Manually Y ou can manually dial a number ov er any telephon e line you select. Or , if the installer assigned a prime line or the idle line preference fea ture to your speakerphone, it will automatically select a line for use when you lift the handset.
• To later redia l the saved number, 1. Lift handset or press line button. 2. Press SA VE NUMBER REDIAL button (sys tem automatic ally dials the number that you sav ed earlier).
• To interrupt the re dialing procedure so that you can use your telephone to make a call, NO TE: Y ou can only do this if the suspend automatic redial feature is enabled. 1. While your telephone is in the process of dialing a number , press the A UTOMA TIC REDIAL button twice .
3.6 W aiting For A Line (Queuing) If all the lines in a line group are b usy , you can p lace your telephone in a queue to aw ait an idle line. When you share a line with another telephone and the line is busy , you can place your telephone in a queue to aw ait the idle line.
(The following instructions assume a tone-fir st default setting. Any user can chang e a call to voice announce signaling by pr essing the INTERCOM button a gain after dialing the exten sion number or by pr essing the DSS b utton again.) • To manually cause t he other telephone to ring, 1.
3.8 Camping On At A Busy Station And W aiting For An A utomatic Callbac k If you call another statio n and recei ve a busy tone or a Do Not Disturb tone, you can press a button that will cause the system to ring your telephone when the station is av ailable.
3.9 Camping On At An Idle Station And W aiting For An A utomatic Callbac k If you call another station and hear ringing b ut recei v e no answer , you can press a button that will cause the system to ring your telephone when any a cti vity is initiated at that station.
3.10 Camping On At A Busy Stati on And W aiting For An Answer (Call W aiting) If the telephone you hav e called is busy , you can send a call-waiting tone to the telephone and w ait on the line for an answer (you must b e using the handset for this feature to work).
3.11 Making A Subdued Off-Hook V oice A nnouncement (SOHV A) Y ou can make a subdued voice announcement to another station that is of f-hook and b usy on a call if the system is arranged to provide this feature. Y our telephone pro vides a SOHV A button for this purpose.

Placing Calls On Hold 4.1 Holding Calls Y ou can place a call on hold and pick it back up a short time l ater . W ith a regular hold, you can pick up the held call at your telephone or another user can pick up the call. W ith an e xclusi v e hold condition, you must pick up the held call at your telephone; no other t elephone has access to it.
• To place a call on exclusive hold, 1. Press HOLD twice and hang up handset. • To retrieve an exclusive hold, 1. Press line button of held call (b utton with flashing light), or press TA P (if station does not ha ve line appearance). • To place a call on hold at another te lephone, 1.
4.2 P arking Cal ls Y ou can place a call on hold in the system so that any station that does not hav e line appearance for the c all can answer it. Y ou accomplish this by placing the call in one of nine park orbits, where the call remains until it is a nswered.

T ransferring Calls 5.1 T ransferring Calls—Screened Y ou can answer a call at you r telephone and tran sfer it to another telephone. If you first identify the caller to the party recei ving the transfer (gi ving that user the opportunity to prepare for the call), you hav e made a screene d transfer .
5.2 T ransferring Calls—Unscreened Y ou can answer a call at your speakerphone and transfer it t o another telephone. If you transfer the call without first announcing it, you hav e made an unscreened transf er .
5 . 3 M a k i n gAH o tT r a n s f e r A hot transfer is a type of screened transfer . T o perform a hot transfer , you voice annou nce the transfer ov er the speake r of the telephone that you want to recei v e the transfer , and release the call to that telephone.

Conferencing Calls 6.1 Conf erencing T elephones T og ether When your join your speakerphone together with se v eral other telephones on the s ame call, the result is called conferencing.
• To retrieve a line from hold and bring tha t party back into the conference , 1. Press TRANSFER/CONFERENCE . 2. Press line button. 3. Press TRANSFER/CONFERENCE . NO TE: If all the conf erence circuits are b usy , you will not be able to add a party to the conference.
Using The Other T elephone Features 7.1 Blocking V oice-Announce Calls Y ou can prev ent voice announcements from sounding o v er your telephone speaker if you wish. This feature also blocks subdued of f-hook voice annou ncements. • To block vo ice-announced calls, 1.
7.2 Diver ting Incoming Calls T o Another Station Call di ve rting permi ts you to send an incomi ng call to another stati on you hav e prev iously designated. Y ou c an di vert an incoming call to the designated station whether you are b usy or idle.
7.3 Forwarding Calls Y ou can permanently forward the calls that normally ring at your telephone to another telephone. Y ou can forward just your prime line an d intercom calls, or you can forward all of your calls.
7.4 Listening T o A Call Over The T elephone Speaker (Gr oup Listening) The 8124S, 8112S, and 8212S speakerphones gi v e you the option of turning on the speak er in your speakerph one while you ha v e the handset lifted.
7.6 Setting A Do Not Disturb Condition At Y our Station The Do Not Disturb (DND) feature keeps calls from ringing at your speakerpho ne, and makes your station appear b usy to intercom calls. If your installer has programmed your station to have this feature, you can enable it a s needed.
7.7 Setting The V olume Contr ol The volume control on you r telephone is a multipurpose control y ou can use to set the volume of the ringer , the speaker , the handset, the headset, background music, and the group listening mode.
• There are eight speaker loudness levels (not available o n 8112N and 8212N telephones) . Set these levels for the curr ent call as follows: 1. While on a call and in speakerphone mode, press VO L U M E U P or VO L U M E D OW N once for each change in loudness that you desire.
• To set a permanent speaker, headset, handset, or g roup listening loudness for all future calls, 1. Press INTERCOM . 2. Activ ate speaker , headset, handset, or group listen mode to be affected. 3. While in that mode, press VO L U M E U P or VO L U M E D OW N to adjust loudness.
7.9 Using Backgr ound Music NO TE: This f eature is not available on the 8112N and 8212N telephones. If the telephone system supplies background music, you can turn it on at your speakerphone while i t is on-hook and idle. The system automatically turns background music off during calls and v oice announcements.
7.10 Using The IMIST Module Impact SCS 8212S and 8212N telephones equipp ed with the optional IMIST module can support an IST dev ice (modem, F AX machine, industry-standard telephone, etc.) in addition t o the telephone. Depending on system programming, you can use the IST de vice to make outgoing calls and recei ve incoming calls.
Sending And Receiving Non-V e rbal Messages 8.1 Using The Messaging Feature If the system installer designates your speakerphone as a central message desk or programs it to have message-wait originate ability , you can turn on the message-waiting light of an y other telephone.
8.2 L ighting The Me ssage-W aiting Light • To turn on the message-waiting light (and a broken dial tone) at an idle telephone, 1. Press INTERCOM . 2. Dial ✳ 3 . 3. Dial extension number of station you wish to alert. The message-waiti ng light of that station will flash.
8.3 Sending LCD Messa ges Y ou can set system-supplied messages at your station to be receiv ed and displayed by a calling LCD speakerphone. These messages gi ve the caller information on your telephone status. Get a list of the av ailable messages from the attendant and write on the blank chart on the ne xt page.

Pr ogramming Y our T elephone 9.1 Programming For Speed Dialing Speed dialing is a feature that lets you: • store and dial outside numbers using one or two butto ns, • store and dial intercom numb ers, • store frequently used feature codes.
9.2 Storing Speed Dial Number s • To store an outside number a s a speed dial number, NO TE: Programming o verwrites existing speed dial numbers at b utton locations.
9.3 Storing DSS Number s • To store an inter com number at a DSS button, NO TE: Storing DSS numbers at b utton locations will ov erwrite any previously stored numbers. 1. Press INTERCOM . 2. Dial ✳✳ 3 . 3. Press programmable button to choose DSS location.
9.4 Storing Feature Buttons If you find that you are using certain features often, yo u can create feature access b uttons to make op erations easier . S ome features you may want to use frequently are defined as follows: Account Code Button (A CCT) —allows you to enter an account code for call record purposes.
Y ou can store f eature access codes at programmable buttons to pro vide yourself with one-b utton access t o features that you u se often. The Quick Refer ence Guide at the end of this book contains a list of feature codes. • To create a feature access but ton, 1.
9.5 Storing The Response Message Button Y ou may program a RESPONSE MESSA GE button, which allo ws you to send an LCD message to a caller who has initiated a SOHV A or intercom call from an L CD telephone, or to send an LCD message t o another LCD telephone that you call and recei ve a b usy signal or no answer .
Operating Y our T elephone With A DSS/BLF Console 10.1 Operating Y our T elephone With A DSS/BLF Console The IB24X, IB48X, and IB64X consoles have additional b uttons and status lights tha t exte nd the memory b utton capa bility of a compani on telephone.
10.1.1 Accessing The Button Levels The IB24X and IB48X DSS/BLF consoles hav e four le ve ls of button s, quadrupling the consoles’ button capacity . The f our buttons at the bottom of each console allo w you to select which button le v el is currently acti v e.
