2 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . • Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1 (W indows 98 or 2000 on ly); Media Play er 9, 10, or 11 (Windo ws XP only). Standard Features The VB6000 WM Appliance supp or ts appro ximately 40 Mbits/ sec total throughput via the Ethernet/IP connection.
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 3 applications at the same time . One of th e major benefits of th e VBrick WM Appliance is it 's compatibility with the Microsoft ecosystem ; this makes i t easy to integrate with existing Windows Media i nstallations .
4 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . The Microsoft Windows Media 9 product suite di vides transport func tionality between tw o distinct products—the encoder and the ser v er .
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 5 • Use an HT TP or RT SPU URL to get the unicast str eam. Y ou can create a we b page that links to the HTTP or RTSPU stream directly or you can open the HTTP URL or R TSPU URL using Win dows Media Player or a web browser .
6 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . Ref lecting fr om VBrick Appliances This section provides more information about how to use VBrick appliances in reflecting applications . F or more about the specific co nfiguration set tings on the VBric k, see Configuration: Encoder on page 23 and Configuration: R eflector on page 57.
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 7 Push Ref lecting from a Windows Media Ser ver The VBrick WM Appliance can push its Windows Media stream to a Microsoft Windows Media Ser ver or to a Rea lNetw orks Helix Ser v er which can then reflect the stream to players or other ser v ers using any of the protocols suppo r ted b y the ser ver .
8 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . Other Considerations Keep in mind these additiona l details . T he VBrick Pull R eflector : • Supports up to five redirects . • Supports the first (or only) HREF entr y in an .asx file. Additional entries in the file are ignored.
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 9 combinations of audio and vi deo rates for multicasting, H TTP and RTSPU ser ving, HTTP Push, and Archi ving . See the Configuration: Encoder pages for more information. The foll o wing drawing shows the selectable outp ut streams from a WM applian ce.
10 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . MBR Output Settings The three concur rent video encoders all use th e same video input. Th e follo wing table shows the configuration output settings that are shar ed between all video encoders, and the output settings that can be configured independentl y for each one .
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 11 T able 6. Aud io R at e S et ti ng s MBR Groups VBrick's implementation of m ultiple bi t rate supports the conce pt of groups. Groups ar e used in a unicast environment where the VBrick WM appliance is being used as a serve r .
12 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . This feature is useful when you w ant to config ure MBR on the appliance with a high bit rate group for LAN HTTP access and at the same time ha ve a ser ver pull a lo w bit rate group for reflecting . Y ou can also use it to test play bac k for a particular group .
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 13 Group to match the requ est exactly . T his closest match ap proach is also used when the player requests a "thinned" video st ream, because the VBrick does not support video thinning .
14 © 2008 VBrick Systems , Inc . Figure 5. On Demand Playbac k It is important to note that on demand playback uses FTP and progressive do wnload for playbac k, and the viewing experience is sub-opt imal compared with content from a dedicated V OD ser ver .
Introducti on VBrick WM Appliance Admin Guide 15 WM encoder and an MPEG-4 decoder in the same appliance. In g eneral, encoders are ins talled in Slot1; decoders are in stalled in Slot2 .
