http://www.tyan.com 23 3. Lift the socket cover to a fully open position. 4. Take off the CPU protection cap. 5. Place the CPU in the CPU socket and make sure that the gold arrow is located in the right direction with two notches properly aligned.
http://www.tyan.com 24 6. Close the socket cover and press the CPU socket lever down to lock the CPU in place. 7. Repeat the same procedures to install the second CPU. Heat sink Installation After installing the processor, yo u should pr oceed to install the he at sink.
http://www.tyan.com 25 2.5 Thermal Interface Material There are two types of thermal interface materials designed for use with the processors. The most common material comes as a small pad attached to the heat sink at the time of purchase. There should be a protective cover over the material.
http://www.tyan.com 26 2.6 Tips on Installing Motherboard in Chassis Before installing your motherboar d, make sure your chassis has the necessar y motherboard support studs in stalle d. These studs are usually metal and a re gold in color. Usually, the chassis manufacturer will pre-install the support studs.
http://www.tyan.com 27 Some chassis include plastic studs instead o f metal. Although the plastic studs are usable, MiTAC recommends using metal stu ds with screws that will fasten the motherboard more securely in plac e. Below is a chart detailing what the most common motherboard studs look like and how they should be installed.
http://www.tyan.com 28 2.7 Installing the Memory Before installing memory, ensure that the memor y you have is compatible wit h the motherboard and processor. Check the T YAN Web site at http:// www.t yan .com for details of the type of memory recommended for your motherboard.

Press the locking levers in the directio n shown in the follo wing illustration. 2. Align the memory module with the socket. The memor y module is keyed to fit only one way in the socket.
http://www.tyan.com 34 2.8 Attaching Drive Cables Attaching Serial ATA Cables S8236 is equipped with six Serial ATA (SATA) channel. Connectio ns for the drives are very simple. There is no need to set Master/Slave jumpers on SAT A drives. If you are in need of SATA/SAS cables or power adapters please contact your place of purchase.
http://www.tyan.com 35 2.9 Installing Add-In Cards Before installing add-in car ds, it’s helpful to know if they are fully compatible with your motherboard. For this reason, we ’ve provided the diagrams belo w, showing the slots that may appear on your motherboa rd.
http://www.tyan.com 36 2.10 Connecting External Devices Connecting external devices to the mot herbo ard is an easy task. The motherboard supports a number of different interfac es through connecti ng peripherals. See the following diagrams for the details.
http://www.tyan.com 37 2.11 Installing the Power Supply There are three power connectors on your S8236. It is required that you h ave an EPS12V power supply which has one 24-pin and t wo 8-pin connectors. 24-pin (PW1) Signal Pin Pin Signal +3.3V 1 13 +3.

http://www.tyan.com 84 NOTE.
http://www.tyan.com 85 Chapter 4: Diagnostics NOTE : if you experience problems with setting up your s ystem, always check the following things in the following order: Memory, Video, CPU By checking these items, you will most likely find out what the problem might have been when setting up your sys tem.
http://www.tyan.com 86 4.3 AMIBIOS Post Code The POST code checkpoints are the lar gest set of checkpoints during the BIOS pre- boot process. The follo wing table describes the type of checkpoints that may occur during the POST portion of the BIOS: Checkpoint Description 03 Disable NMI, Parity, video for EGA, and DMA controllers.
http://www.tyan.com 87 Checkpoint Description 38 Initializes different devices through DIM. See DIM Code Checkpoints section of document for more information. 39 Initializes DMAC-1 & DMAC-2. 3A Initialize RTC date/time. 3B Test for total memory installed in the system.
http://www.tyan.com 88 NOTE.
http://www.tyan.com 89 Glossary ACPI (Advanced Configu ration and Pow er Interface): a power management specification that allo ws the operating system to cont rol the amount of power distributed to the computer’s devices. Devices not in use can be turned off, reducing unnecessary power expenditure.
http://www.tyan.com 90 Bus: a data pathway. The term is used especially to refer to the connectio n between the processor and system memory, and bet ween the processor a nd PCI or ISA local buses. Bus mastering: allo ws peripheral devices and IDEs to access the s ystem memory without going through the CPU (similar to D MA channels).
http://www.tyan.com 91 DRAM (Dynamic RAM): widely available, ver y affordable form of RAM which looses data if it is not recharged re gularl y (ever y few milliseconds). This refresh requirement makes DRAM three to ten times slower than non-recharged RAM such as SRAM.
http://www.tyan.com 92 I/O (Input/Output): the connection between your computer and another piece of hardware (mouse, keyboard, etc.) IRQ (Interrupt Request): an electronic request that r uns from a hardware device to the CPU. The interrupt controller ass igns priorities to incomi ng requests and delivers them to the CPU.
http://www.tyan.com 93 RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks): a way for the same data to be stored in different places on many hard dr ives. By using this method, the data is stored redundantly and multiple hard driv es will appear as a singl e drive to the operating system.
http://www.tyan.com 94 Standby mode: in this mode, the video and hard drives shut down; all other devices continue to operate normall y. UltraDMA-33/66/100: a fast version of the old DMA channel.
http://www.tyan.com 95 Technical Support If a problem arises with your system, you sho u ld first turn to your dealer for direct support. Your system has most likely been configured or d esigned by them and they should have the best idea of what hardware and software your s ystem contains.
http://www.tyan.com 96 NOTE: A receipt or copy of your i nvoice marked with the date of purchase is required before any warranty service can be rendered. You may obtain service by calling the manufa cturer for a Return Merchandise Authorizatio n (RMA) number.
