Chapter 1. Introduction 9 1 Intro duction 1.1 W elcome This is the man ual for Ro c kb o x. Rockbox is an open source firmw are replacement for a gro wing num b er of digital audio pla yers. Ro c kb o x aims to b e considerably more functional and efficien t than your device’s stock firm ware while remaining easy to use and customisable.
Chapter 1. Introduction 10 c hannel for Ro c kb o x is #rockbox on irc://irc.freeno de.net . A bunch of helpful dev elop ers and users are usually around. Just join and ask – if someone knows the answ er you’ll usually get an answ er pretty quic kly .
Chapter 2. Inst alla tion 11 2 Installation 2.1 Overview There are t wo w ays of installing Rockbox: automated and manual. While the man ual w ay is older, more tested and prov en to work correctly , the automated installation is based on a nice graphical application that do es almost ev erything for y ou.
Chapter 2. Inst alla tion 12 2.2 Prerequisites Before installing Ro c kb o x y ou should make sure y ou meet the prerequisites. Y ou ma y need some additional to ols for installation. In most cases these will already b e a v ailable on y our computer, but if not, installing some additional softw are might be necessary .

Inst alla tion 13 • Uninstall all comp onen ts y ou installed using Ro c kb o x Utility Prebuilt binaries for Windo ws, Lin ux and MacOS X are av ailable at the Z Ro c kb o xUtility wiki page. W arning: When first starting Rockbo x Utility run “Autodetect”, found in the con- ! figuration dialog (File → Configure).

Chapter 2. Inst alla tion 15 • Starting at the ro ot directory of y our pla yer bro wse into the directory GBSYSTEM and from that in to the sub directory FWIMG . These directories are hidden. Make sure that y ou hav e configured your bro wser to show hidden files or y ou ma y b e unable to see FWIMG .

Chapter 3. Quick St ar t 17 3 Quick Sta rt 3.1 Basic Overview 3.1.1 The pla y er’s controls Throughout this man ual, the buttons on the pla yer are labelled according to the picture ab o v e. Whenever a button name is prefixed b y “Long”, a long press of approx- imately one second should b e performed on that button.

The File Browser lets y ou navigate through the files and directories on y our play er, entering directories and executing the default action on eac h file.

Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 30 The ba r: This is the wide horizon tal bar. It represents the curren t volume v alue. The p eak indicato r: This is a little vertical line at the righ t end of the bar. It indicates the p eak volume v alue that o ccurred recently .
Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 31 Sound Settings This is a shortcut to the Sound Settings Menu , where you can configure v olume, bass, treble, and other settings affecting the sound of y our music.
Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 32 This screen is accessible from the WPS screen, and provides a detailed view of all the iden tity information about the current trac k. This info is kno wn as meta data and is stored in audio file formats to k eep information on artist, album etc.
Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 33 Directo ry . A playlist! One of the keys to getting the most out of Rockbox is under- standing that Ro ckbox always considers the song that it is pla ying to b e part of a pla ylist, and in some situations, Rockbox will create a pla ylist automatically .
Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 34 existing pla ylist and Add to a new pla ylist creates a new playlist con taining the selected trac k or directory .
Chapter 4. Bro wsing and pla ying 35 Insert. Add trac k(s) immediately after any trac ks added via the most recent Inser t op eration. If no tracks ha v e yet been added via an Inser t , new tracks will be added immediately after the curren t playing trac k.

Chapter 5. The Main Menu 40 Create Pla ylist: Ro c kb o x will create a playlist with all trac ks in the current directory and all sub-directories. The playlist will be created one directory level “up” from where y ou currently are. View Current Pla ylist: Displa ys the conten ts of the playlist curren tly stored in memory .
Chapter 5. The Main Menu 41 5.11 Quick Screen Whilst not strictly part of the Main Menu , it is worth noting that a few of the more commonly used settings are a v ailable from the Quick Screen . The Quick Screen screen is accessed with Long Menu and exited with Men u .
Chapter 6. Sound Settings 42 6 Sound Settings Figure 6.1: The sound settings screen The sound settings men u offers a selection of sound settings you ma y change to customise y our listening exp erience. 6.1 V olume This setting adjusts the v olume of your m usic.
Chapter 6. Sound Settings 43 6.2 Bass This setting emphasises or suppresses the lo wer (bass) frequencies in the sound. A v alue of 0 dB means that bass sounds are unaltered (flat resp onse). 6.3 T reble This setting emphasises or suppresses the higher (treble) frequencies in the sound.
Chapter 6. Sound Settings 44 ten ts of one channel in to the other. This has the effect of gradually centering the stereo image, until y ou ha ve monophonic sound at 0%. V alues ab ov e 100% will progressively remo ve components in one c hannel that is also present in the other.

Chapter 6. Sound Settings 46 Bands 1-3: Peaking filters P eaking EQ filters b o ost or low er a frequency range centered at the cen ter frequency chosen. Graphic equalizers in home stereos are usually p eaking filters. The p eaking filters in Ro c kb o x’s EQ lets you adjust three differen t parameters for EQ bands 1 through 3.
Chapter 6. Sound Settings 47 Advanced EQ: This sub menu pro vides options for adjusting the same parameters as the Graphical EQ . The only difference is that the parameters are adjusted through textual men us rather than through a graphic interface. Save EQ Preset: This option sav es the curren t EQ configuration in a .
Chapter 7. Pla yba ck Settings 48 7 Pla yback Settings The Pla yback Settings menu allo ws you to configure settings related to audio play- bac k. 7.1 Shuffle T urning sh uffle on will cause Ro c kb ox to randomly re-order the pla ylist.
Chapter 7. Pla yba ck Settings 49 7.3 Pla y Selected First This setting con trols what happ ens when y ou select a file for playbac k while shuffle mode is on. If the Pla y Selected First setting is Yes , the file y ou selected will b e play ed first.
Chapter 7. Pla yba ck Settings 50 Enable Crossfade If set to Off , crossfade is disabled. If set to Al w a ys , songs will alw ays crossfade in to one another. If set to Shuffle , crossfade is enabled when the sh uffle feature is set to Yes , but disabled otherwise.
Chapter 7. Pla yba ck Settings 51 7.9 Repla ygain This allo ws you to con trol the replaygain function. The purp ose of replaygain is to adjust the v olume of the music pla yed so that all songs (or albums, depending on your settings) ha ve the same apparen t volume.

Pla yba ck Settings 53 7.15 Skip Length Designed to sp eed up na vigation and preven t uninten tional track skipping when listening to long audio trac ks, Skip Length changes the behavior of the Left and Righ t buttons so that they skip b y a given n umber of minutes instead of skipping to a new trac k.

Recursively Insert Directo ries. If set to On , then when a directory is inserted or queued in to a dynamic playlist, all sub directories will also b e inserted.
Chapter 8. General Settings 55 So rt Case Sensitive: If this option is set to Yes , all files that start with upp er case letters will b e listed first, follow ed b y all files that b egin with low er case letters. If this option is set to NO, then case will b e ignored when sorting files.
Chapter 8. General Settings 56 This has a similar effect on the Database bro wser. If set to Current Director y Onl y or Full P a th , then the title of each men u will b e displa yed on the first line in the D a t abase Browser . 8.3 Database This sub men u allows y ou to configure the database.
Chapter 8. General Settings 57 Scroll Sp eed: Sets how man y times p er second the automatic horizontal scrolling text will mo ve a step. Scroll Sta rt Delay: Controls ho w many milliseconds Rockbox should w ait b efore a new text b egins automatically scrolling.
Chapter 8. General Settings 58 Clip Hold Time: The num b er of seconds that the clipping indicator will b e visible after clipping is detected. Scale: Select whether the p eak meter displa ys linear or logarithmic v alues. The h uman ear p erceives loudness on a logarithmic scale.
Chapter 8. General Settings 59 effect whatso ev er on actual battery life. This setting only affects the accuracy of the battery life estimation as sho wn on screen. Cha rge During USB Connection: This option lets y ou control whether the pla y er should c harge during the USB connection and hence draw the full 500mA.
Chapter 8. General Settings 60 Max Pla ylist Size: This setting con trols the maximum size of a pla ylist. The pla ylist size can b e b etw een 1,000 and 32,000 files, in steps of 1,000 (default is 10,000). Higher v alues will shorten the m usic buffer, so y ou should increase this setting only if y ou hav e very large pla ylists.

Chapter 9. Theme Settings 64 9 Theme Settings The Theme Settings menu offers options that y ou can change to customize the visual app erance of Ro ckbox. Bro wse Themes. This option will displa y all the currently installed themes on the pla yer, press Select or Righ t to load the chosen theme and apply it.
Chapter 9. Theme Settings 65 Ba r (Gradient Colour): A bar with a colour gradient, the colours are set in the Colours submen u. Colours. The options in this men u sets the colours for visual elements in Ro c kb o x. Line Selecto r Colours. These options sets the colours for the line selector bars.
Chapter 10. Plugins 66 10 Plugins Plugins are programs that Ro c kb o x can load and run. Only one plugin can b e loaded at a time. Plugins ha ve exclusiv e con trol o ver the user in terface. This means y ou cannot switc h back and forth betw een a plugin and Ro ckbox.
