7 Chapter 1: Intr oduction Overview Thank you for cho osing the Thecus N2200 IP St orage Serv er. The Th ecus N2200 is an easy-to-u se storage server that al lows a ded icated approach to storin g and distribu ting dat a on a network. Data reli ability is ensured wi th RAID fea tures that provide data security an d recovery.
8 Media Server With t he built-in Medi a Server capabi lit y, the N2200 provi des media str eaming service to stand -alone n etworked hom e medi a adapters that support the UPnP A V protocol or a re Digit al Living Network Alli ance (DLNA) standa rd compl iant.

12 Chapter 2: Har dw are Inst allation Overview Your N2200 is designed for easy installation. To help you get start ed, the following chapter wil l help you qu ickl y get you r N2200 up an d runn ing . Pl ease read i t care fully to prevent dam agin g your unit during install ation.
13 Cable Connections To connect th e N2200 t o your netwo rk, foll ow the steps below: 1. Connect an Eth ernet ca ble from you r network t o the LAN port on th e ba ck panel of the N2200. 2. Connect th e provided p ower cord i nto the powe r socket on the back pa nel.
14 Chapter 3: First Time Setup Overview Once th e hardw are i s install ed, ph ysicall y connected to your network, a nd powered on, you can configu re the N2200 s o that it is acc essible to your netw ork users. The re is one way to set up your N2200: using the Thecus S mart Utility .
15 5. Please select your in stallati on mode, One Click Install ation or Manu al Installation . 6. After your in stalled HDDs are det ected, s elect your d esired RA ID l evel. Press Next to cont inu e. 7. The N2200 wi ll automatically creat e several folders.
16 8. Complete the N2200 Sm art Utili ty Wizard. A. You can access the N2200 Web Admi nistrator i nterface b y clicki ng th e Start Brower butt on. The def aul t password is “ admi n ”. You can also setu p a backup task at this poi nt by cli cking the Setup backup task button.
17 Single Ta sk Quick B ackup: P erform a si ngle ba ckup by selecti ng t he source and desti nation. Manually Backup and T ask List : Show all task informati on and opt ions.
18 USB Copy The USB Copy fu nction enabl es you to copy files stored on US B devi ces s uch as USB disks and di gital cameras to the N220 0 with a press of a button. To us e USB copy, follow th e steps below: 1. Plug your USB device i nto an avai lable USB port on the Front Panel.
19 Step 4: Create Folders and Set Up ACLs Once users a re int roduced i nto your network , you can b egin to create va ri ous folders on the N2200 and contr ol user acces s to each u sin g Folder Access Cont rol Lists. 20 Chapter 4: S ystem Administra tion Overview The N22 00 provides an easily accessible Web A dministration Interface . With it, you can confi gure and moni tor the N2200 any where on the n etwork. Web Administrati on Interface Make sure your network is connect ed to the Int ernet.

23 Product Info rmation Item Description Manufacture r Displays th e name of the s ystem manu facturer. Product No. Shows the mod el nu mber of the system. Firmware ve rsion Shows the cur rent firmwa re versi on. Up tim e Displays the total run time of the sy stem.

25 System Managemen t The System M anagem ent menu gives you a weal th of settin gs that you can use to configure your N2200’s system admi ni stration function s. You can set up syst em time, system n otifi cations, and even up grade fi rmware from th is menu.
26 Notification Configuration From the m enu, choose the Notification item, and the Notific ation Configuration screen ap pears. Thi s screen l ets you have th e N2200 noti fy you in case of any sy stem mal functi on. Press Apply to confirm al l setti ngs.
27 Schedule Power On/Off Using the N2200’s Syst em Manag ement, you c an save energy an d mo ney by schedulin g the N2200 t o turn it self on and off during certai n times of the day . From the m enu, choose the Schedule Power O n/Off item an d the S chedule Power On/Off screen appears.
28 Example - M onday: O ff: 8:00; Off: 16:00 System will turn off at 8 :00 AM on M onday. Sys tem will turn off at 16:0 0 PM on Monday, i f i t was o n .
29 Utility Administrator Passwor d From the m enu, choose the Administr ator Pa ssword i tem and the Chan ge Administrato r Password screen appe ars. Enter a n ew passwo rd in th e New Password b ox and con firm your new pa ssword in t he Confirm Passw ord box.
30 Factory default From the m enu, choose the Factory D efault item an d the Reset to Factor y Default screen app ears. Press Appl y t o reset th e N22 00 t o fa ctory de fault setti ngs. Reboot & Shutdown From the m enu, choose Reboot & Shut down i tem, and the Shutdow n/Reboot System s c reen app ears .

33 LAN Configuration Item Description Host name Host name that identifies the N2200 on the network. Domain name Specifies the domain name of the N2200. WINS Server To set a serve r name fo r NetBIOS c omputer. MAC Address MAC address of the network interface.
34 Samba Service Used for lett ing t he operatin g system of UN IX series and SM B/CIFS of Microsoft Windows op erating syst em (Serve r Message Bl ock / Common Internet F ile System).Do the li nk in network prot ocol. Enable or Disabl e SMB/CIFS protocol for Windows, App le, Uni x drive mappi ng.

36 Port Specifies the port number of an incoming connection on a non-standard port. FTP ENCODE If your FTP clie nt or o perating sy ste m does n ot support Unicode (e.g. Windows® 95/98/ME or MAC OS9/8), select the same encoding as your O S here in order to properly vie w the files an d directories on the server.
37 A descripti on of each fi eld follows: Media Manager Settings Item Description Media Server Enable or disable the Media Server service. Shared Media Folders Select the folder(s) that contains media files to be shared. Rescan Click the Rescan button to have the N2200 for new conte nts in the selected media folder.
38 A descripti on of each i tem foll ows: Web Service Item Description HTTP (WebDisk) Support Enable or disable WebDisk support. Enter the port number if this option is enabled. The port number is default 80. HTTPs (Secure WebDisk) Support Enable or disabl e secure WebDisk support.
39 Bonjour Setting Bonjour is App le Inc.'s t rade name for its i mplementati on of Zeroconf, a servi ce discovery prot ocol. Bonjou r locates devi ces such a s printers, as w ell as other computers, an d the ser vices that th ose device s offer on a l ocal network usin g multi cast Domain Name System servi ce records .
40 Disks Information Item Description Disk No. Indicates disk locat ion. Capacity Shows the SATA hard disk capacity. Model Displays the SATA hard disk model name. Firmware Shows the SATA hard disk firmware version. Status Indicates the status of the disk.

45 Share Folder From the Sto rage men u, choose Sha re Folde r , and the Fol der scre en appears. This screen al lows you to c reate and confi gure f olders on the N22 00 vol ume. Adding Folders On the Folder screen, pre ss the Add butt on and t he Add Folder screen app ears.
46 Modify Folders On th e Fol der screen , p ress th e Ed it bu tton and th e Mo dify Folde r sc reen a ppears. This screen all ows you t o change fol der informat ion. After enteri ng the informati on, press Apply to save your changes. Modify Folder Item Description RAID ID RAID vol ume where the folder will reside.
47 NFS Share To allow NFS access to t he share fol der, enabl e the NFS Serv ice , and th en set up hosts wi th access right s by clickin g Add . NFS Share Item Description Hostname Enter the name or IP address of the host Privilege Host has either read only or writeable access to the folder.
48 IO Mapping There are three selections available: • Guest system root account will have full access to this share (root:root). • Guest syste m ro ot account will be mapp ed to anonym ous user (nobody:nogroup) on NAS. • All user on guest system will be mapped to anonymous user (nobody:nogroup) on NAS.
49 1. On the ACL sc reen, all network g roups and use rs are li sted in the left ha nd column. Sel ect a group or user from th is li st. 2. With t he group or user selected, p ress one of t he buttons fr om the th ree access level columns at the top. Th e group o r user then app ears in t hat column an d has that l evel of acc ess to the fol der.
50 ISO Mount The ISO Moun t feature i s very useful tool i ncluded with Thecus p roducts . With it , users can moun t an IS O file and have the expo rt name di splay all details from mounted ISO file. From th e mai n menu, the ISO Mount featu re i s locat ed und er Sto rage .
51 To mount a new ISO fi le, select one f rom the li sted ISO fil es and i nput the desired mounti ng name in to t he “Mou nt as:” fi eld. Cli ck Add to compl ete moun ting th e ISO file. If you do not ente r a “Mount a s” ISO fil e export name, th e system will automati cally assign the export nam e as the ISO file na me.
52 After you have compl eted addin g the ISO ima ge, then the pag e will display all mounted ISO files: You can cl ick Unmount to remove th e mounted ISO fil e. B. Using ISO s The mounted ISO fil e will be located in a share folder with the assigned ISO image name.
53 User and Group A uthentication The N2200 h as built -in user databas e that all ows administrat ors to man age user access usi ng different g roup poli cies. From th e User and Gro up Auth entication menu, you can create, m odify, an d delete users, and assig n them t o grou ps that you designat e.
54 Edit Users 1. Select an exi sting u ser from the Loc al User Co nfiguration screen. 2. Click on the Ed it button , and Local User Setti ng screen ap pears. 3. From he re, you can ent er a new password and re-ent er to confi rm, or use th e << or >> but tons to h ave this use r join or l eave a group.
55 Remove Users 1. Select an exi sting u ser from the Loc al User Co nfiguration screen. 2. Click on Remo ve butto n and the use r is deleted from the syst em. Local Group Configuration From the Accou nts me nu, choose th e Group item, an d the Loc al Group Configuration screen appears.
56 Add Groups 1. On the Lo cal Group Configur ation scre en, click on th e Add button . 2. The Loc al Group Sett ing scre en appears. 3. Enter a Group Name . 4. Enter a Grou p ID num ber. If l eft bla nk, th e system will automati cally assign one. 5.
57 Remove Groups 1. On the Loca l Group Co nfiguration screen, sel ect a group name from the list. 2. Press Remove t o delet e the group from the sy stem.
58 Application Server The N2200 sup ports a P rinter Serv er and i Tunes Server. The i ntegrated Pri nter Server all ows you to sh are a singl e USB pri nter will all users on th e networ k. By activati ng the iTunes Serv er on the N220 0, you wi ll be abl e to directly pl ay music files on th is device wi th your i Tunes cl ient software.
59 If a corrupt prin t j ob i s sent t o a print er, prin ting may suddenl y fai l. If your prin t jobs seem to be l ocked up, p ressing the Remove All Document s button to clear the print q ueue may resolve the issue. You can confi gure the N2 200 to act as a pri nter server.

64 Backup There are a nu mber of w ays to back up data wit h the N2200. Nsync You can backup a share folder to an other N220 0 (Nsync Target) or any FTP server for s a fe keeping as l ong as you have appropriate access r i ght on th at target. When using Nsync between tw o N2200 s, you have th e option to trans mit fil es securely between them .
65 Add Nsync Task Item Description Task Name The name of your Nsync task. Target Server Manufacturer Select whether the target is a Thec us Prod uct (e.g. N 2200) or FTP server. Nsync Mode Synchronize mode or Incremental mode . Target Server IP Address The IP address of your target server.
66 Password on Target Server The password for the username on the target server. Test Connection Click to check the connection to the Target Server. Schedule Enable or Disable schedule backup of your share folders. Time The time when t he Nsync task will run.
67 Chapter 5: Usin g the N2200 Overview Once the N22 00 is setu p and operati ng, users on the network ma y mana ge all varieties of di gital music, photos, or fil es by simply usin g their web br owsers.
68 6. To c reate a new f older wi thin the current folder, press the N ew fol der b utton. When t he screen appea rs ent er a name for the fol der. Press OK to create the folder. 7. To upl oad a file from your compu ter to the current folder, press the New fil e (upload) button.

70 Windows XP Publishing Wiza rd There are man y ways for a l ocal user to upload pictures int o their photo al bum. Users of Wi ndows XP ca n upl oad their pictu res using th e Windows XP P ubli shing Wizard. 1. Cli ck on the XP Pub lishing Wiz ard i con on top rig ht corner.
71 4. Once th e register fi le is i nstalled, use the Wind ows file manag er to browse the folder th at contain s the pictu re you want to publish. On th e left pan e, there will be an i con labeled “ Publi sh this fol der to th e Web ”. 5. Click on thi s icon an d Web Publis hing Wiza rd will start.
72 7. Your PC will start to con nect to the Ph oto W eb Server. 8. Select N2200 Phot o Galler y Wiz ard t o pu blish your pictu res to the N2 200. 9. Login in to the N2200 wi th your local user name and password . 10. Create your al bum by e ntering an album na me and clicking on th e Create Album button.
73 11. Select the alb um you wan t to upl oad your pict ures to. 12. Confirm the ta rget albu m. 13. Windows will show you that th e picture upl oad is in progres s. 14. When the upl oad is finished, the Wi zard will ask you whether if you want to go to the websi te.
74 15. Cli ck on the user’s i con to go to that user’s al bum. 16. You wi ll see the user’ s al bum list. Cli ck on Album . 17. Fi nished! You will see the pi ctures just sel ected in the al bum.
75 Managing Albums and Photos Icon Func tio n Description Make Cover Make selected photo your cover picture. Back Return to the previous screen. Add Add a new album or photos. Modify Edit the name and description of the selected album or photo. Each name is limited to 20 characters and each description is limited to 255 characters.
76 Creating Albums To create a ph oto albu m, foll ow the steps bel ow: 1. Click the Add b utton to create a new albu m. 2. Enter a name for t he album, and enter a description if you wi sh. Then, click on the Create Album b utton. Password Protecting Albums If you woul d like to put a passwo rd on a parti cular al bum, follow th ese steps: 1.

If you already are a holder of Thecus N2200, but have not read the manual yet, you should do it for the reasons described above. You will learn then if you properly used the available features, and whether you have not made any mistakes, which can shorten the lifetime Thecus N2200.
