To install the handwheel handles, thread the large handle into the carriage handwheel and the small handle into the cross slide handwheel, as shown in Figure 13 .

If you discover during the test run that the lathe will not operate, or that the spindle runs backwards, the lathe may be wired out of phase.

After completing the previous step, stop the spindle and move the gearbox range lever to neutral, then move the spindle speed range lever to high. 8. Turn the lathe ON and let it run for ten minutes in each speed of 400, 1000, and 2500 RPM.

The offset movement is controlled by set screws on both sides of the tailstock (see Figure 57 ), and the amount of movement is indicated by the offset scale on the back of the tailstock.

Thoroughly clean and dry the tapered mating surfaces of the spindle bore, tapered sleeve, and the center, making sure that no lint or oil remains on the tapers.

Carriage Handwheel The carriage handwheel moves the carriage left or right along the bed.
-44- F or Machines Mfg . Since 7/ 09 E VS To ol ro om Lat he s OP E RA TION On this machine, both the carriage and cross slide have power feed capability. The rate that these components move (feed rate) is controlled by how the levers are configured on the gearbox.
F or Machines Mfg . Since 7/ 09 EVS Too lroom Lath es -4 5- OP E RA TION Power F eed Controls The feed direction lever ( Figure 81 ) controls direction of the carriage. The quick change feed direction knob ( Figure 82 ) reverses the feed direction of the carriage while the lathe is running.

Clean away debris and grime from the gear and apply a light coat of machine oil. c. Swap the position of the gear, as shown in Figure 87 , then align it with the key and insert it on the gear shaft.

The dial numbers indicate when to engage the half nut for a specific thread pitch.

Since 7/ 09 EVS Too lroom Lath es -6 3- MAI NTE NAN C E Changing Cutting Fluid When you replace the old cutting fluid, take the time to thoroughly clean out the chip drawer, catch tray, and chip tray. The entire job only takes about a 1 ⁄ 2 hour when you are prepared with the proper materials and tools.

If decommissioning this machine, use the steps in this section to ensure that it remains in good condition for later use.

F or Machines Mfg . Since 7/ 09 EVS Too lroom Lath es -6 7 - S E RVI C E Half Nut Adjustment The half nut mechanism can be tightened if it becomes loose from wear. The pressure exerted by the half nut is controlled by a gib similar to the one in the saddle, which is on Page 66 .
-6 8- F or Machines Mfg . Since 7/ 09 E VS To ol ro om Lat he s S E RVI C E F eedrod Clutc h Adjustment This lathe has an adjustable feed clutch that helps protect the drivetrain from overload. The feed clutch release point is adjusted at the factory.
F or Machines Mfg . Since 7/ 09 EVS Too lroom Lath es -6 9- S E RVI C E V- Belts Brake & Switc h V-belts stretch and wear with use, so check them on a monthly basis to ensure optimal power transmission. Replace all of the V-belts if any of them show signs of glazing, fraying, or cracking.

The gap insert was installed, then ground flush with the bed at the factory to ensure precise fit and alignment.
