Ergonomic C onsiderations Y ou will be using your n otebook compu ter as a portable device in a variety of envir onments. Whenever possible, you should attempt to apply the followi ng ergonomic con s iderations to both stationary an d portable envir onments.
❑ Furniture and posture – Sit in a chair with goo d back support and armr ests. Adjust t he le vel of th e chair so your fee t ar e flat on the floor . A footr est may make you mor e comfo rtable. Sit in a r elaxed, upright postur e and avoid slouching forwar d or leaning far backwar d.

Using Y our 505 SuperSlim Notebook This section describes how to start using your computer an d how to use your computer ’s internal and external devices, such as the touchpad and floppy disk drive.

Connectin g a Power Source Y ou can us e either AC power or a rechar geable battery pack as a power source. 1 Plug the cable attached to the AC adapter into the D C In connector on the computer . 2 Pull the pro ng on the AC adapter u pwar ds and plug it into an AC outle t.
Y ou can use a battery pack as a source of po w er. The PCGA-BP51 battery pack that comes w ith your computer is not fully char ged at the time of pur c hase. Foll ow the steps below to insert an d charge the battery pack. 1 Move the lock lever on the bottom of the computer to t he positio n.
1 Connect the AC adapt er to the computer . 2 Insert the battery pack. The computer autom atically char ges the batter y (the battery indicator light flashes in a d o uble blink pattern as the battery char ges). When the battery is 85 % full , the battery i ndicator light tu rns off.
1 T urn of f the computer . 2 Slide the lock lever t o the position. 3 Slide the r elease lever to the position and slide the battery away from the computer .
Star tin g Y our Comput er 1 Slide the LCD lock lever in t he dir ecti on of t he arro w , and lift the cover . 2 Slide the power switch on the right side towar d the fr ont of the computer until th e gr een power indicato r light turn s on. 3 If necessary , adjust the brightness contr ols for the LCD display .
Shutti ng Down Y our Compute r 1 Click the St art button on the W indow s 98 taskb ar . 2 Click Shut Do wn at the bottom o f the Start menu to dis play the Shu t Down W in dow s dia log bo x. 3 Select Shut down. 4 Click OK. 5 W a it for you r computer to turn off automatically .
Registering Windo ws ® 98 The first time you turn on your computer , you need to co mplete a few steps to r egi ster and configur e the W indows 98 softwar e that is alrea dy installed on your computer . The on-scr een instructions guide you thr ough the r egis tration and configuration pr ocess.

Using the Key board Y our keyboar d is very similar to a typewriter ’s, but the keyboard has additiona l keys that perform specif ic computer-related tasks.
Esc ape key The E sc (Escape) ke y is used to cancel co mmands Print S c reen key T he Print S c reen key takes a n electr onic snapsh ot of th e scr een and places it in the W indows Clipboar d. Y ou can then pa st e the scr een shot in t o a doc ument and p rin t it.

Fn+ (E SC) System S uspend Puts the system in to System Suspend mo de, a power management state. T o r eturn the system to the a ctive state, pr ess any key or press the power switch on your c omputer .
Using the T ouchpad The keyboar d contains a cursor -pointing device called a touchpad. Y o u can point to, select, drag, and scroll objects on the scr een using the buil t-in touchpa d. Point Slide one fi nger on the touchpad to place t h e pointer on a n item or object .
Using the Plastic Pen The plastic pen, located in the vinyl bag with your Us er Guide , ca n be use d on the touchpa d for drawing or for signing you r name wi th the ScribblePad softwar e. Y ou can stor e the pen in the pen compartmen t on the left side of the L C D scre en.
ScribblePad is an applica tion tha t lets y ou create memos by writin g on the touchpa d using the su pplied plastic pen. 1 Click the St art button on the W indow s 98 taskb ar . 2 Point to Softwar e Center , point to Applications, and then cl ick ScribblePad.
Using the Floppy Dis k Drive Y ou can co nnect the floppy disk drive to the FDD connector on your computer: 1 T u rn of f the computer . 2 Open the cover of the Floppy disk drive connector . 3 Plug the floppy disk drive cable into the FDD connector . The V AIO logo on the dis k drive should be facing up.
❑ When you finish using the diskette, wait until the LED indicator turns off and then press the Eject button to remove the diskette. 1 T urn of f the computer . 2 Pr es s both sides of the f l oppy disk drive cable and unplug the ca b le from the computer .
Using PC Cards Y our computer includes a PC card slot. PC cards allow you to connect portable external devices, such as a CD- ROM drive, or to connect to a networ k. 1 Pull the PC card r elease button up a way fr o m the computer and push it in tow ards the computer .
2 Remove the P C car d slot pro tector . 3 Insert the PC car d into the PC car d sl ot, fr ont label facing up. Gently push the car d into the slot until the car d is fixed into the connector .
1 Close any applications that use the PC car d. Otherwise data may be lost. 2 Click the PC car d icon in the taskbar and close the car d. 3 Pull the PC car d r el ease button up and press it in towar ds the computer . 4 Gently g rasp the card and pu ll it out.
Using Inf rared Commu nication Device s Y our co mputer includes an infrar ed port, located on the r ight side of the computer . Y ou can use this port to communicate with other in frared- equipped devices with co mpati ble protocols , su ch as a digital still cam era or other co mputers.

Using Po wer S aving Mode s When you use a battery as the source of power for your computer , you can take advantage of power m a nagement settings to conserve battery life.
The state of the sy stem is saved on the ha rd drive and po w er is turned o ff. The power indicato r light is off in this mode. Press Fn+F12. Y o u can al so use the Po werPanel utilit y to en ter System Hibernation mode. T u rn on the computer by sliding the power sw i tch forwar d.
Connecting Peripheral Devices Y ou can add functionality to your computer by co nnecting any of these peripherals: ❑ Phone line ( page 34 ) ❑ Port replicator (page 35) ❑ Printer (page 37) ❑ Ex.
Connecting a Phone Line Y ou need to connect a phone line to take advantage of online services, the Internet, and Sony Online Support. 1 Open the ph one line jack cover . The cover open s only to a 45 degr ee angle . 2 Plug one end of the ph one cable into the ja ck on the inside of th e phone line jack cover .
Connect ing the Port Replicator Y ou can us e the PCGA-PR5 p ort r epli cator (supplied) to connect peripheral devices such as a printer or external display .
1 T u rn of f the computer . 2 Open the port replicator connector cover on the left side of the computer . 3 Plug the port r epli cator cable into the port replicator co nnector on the computer . 1 T u rn of f the computer . 2 Pre s s both sides of the port r eplicator cable and unplug the cable fr om the computer .
3 Fold the port replicator cable into the compartment on the side of the port r e plicator . Y ou can us e the port r eplicator to connect a W indows 98- compati ble printer or oth er parallel port device to your computer . ❑ Use the symbol to locate the Printe r connector on the por t r epli cator .
Y ou can use the port replicator to connect an external display to your notebook com puter . Fo r example, you can use th e computer with any of the follow ing: ❑ Computer disp lay (mon itor ) (page 38) ❑ Pr ojecto r (page 39) ❑ Use the symbol on the port r eplicator to locate the Monitor connector .
Y ou can us e a pr ojector as an external display , such as the Sony LCD Pr o jector . 1 Use the symbol to locate t he Monitor con nector . Plug the RGB signal cabl e into this connector . 2 Use the symbol to locate the He adphone conn ector . Plu g the audio cabl e i nto t his c onn e cto r .
Y ou can us e the port r eplicator to con nect an external mouse and keyboar d to you r computer . The Mouse and Keyboar d connectors r equir e a PS/2 ™ -style plug o r adapter . 1 T u rn of f the computer . 2 Use the and symbols to locate the Mouse and K eyboard connectors.
Y ou can us e the port r eplicator to connect your notebook computer to another c omputer , or t o connect oth er peripherals, such as the Sony Digital S till Camera. ❑ Use the symbol to loca te the Serial connecto r . Plug the con necting cable into t his port on the port r eplicator and into the serial port on the desktop computer .

Connect ing the CD-ROM Drive Y ou can use the option al PCGA-CD5 CD-ROM dri ve with your noteboo k computer . 1 T urn of f your computer . 2 Remove the P C car d slot pro tector from the PC car d slot. See “Using PC Cards” on page 26 for details. 3 Connect the CD -ROM drive cable to the PC ca rd supplied with the CD-ROM dr i ve.
5 Connect the CD-ROM drive AC power adapter to the CD-ROM drive and plug the AC adapter into an AC outlet. 1 Slide the power switch to th e on position. 2 Slide the Open butto n in the direction of the a rro w to open the CD-ROM drive lid. 3 Place the CD-ROM disc in the tray with th e label side facing up.
4 Gently press on the CD-ROM drive lid until it clicks shut In addition to con necting the CD-RO M drive to your com puter , you mus t connect the drive to the computer with a male-to-male ster eo mini plug (not supplied).
Conne cting Ext ernal Speake rs Y ou can us e the optional PCGA-SP5 s ter eo speakers with your com pu ter or other speakers designed f or computer use.

Connect ing a Universal Serial Bus (USB) Device Y ou can connect a USB device to your computer . ❑ Use the symbol to locate the USB connector on the left side of the computer . Plug one en d of a USB cable into th is port and the oth er end into the USB device.

Getting Started with V AIO Space V AIO Sp ace is Sony’s origina l utility th at organizes the preinst alled application s on y our V AIO N otebook Computer , makin g it easi er for you to find and launch the applicat ions on your computer , use the Sony audi o and video players, conn ect to the Internet, and more.
V AIO Sp ace C ente rs There are five cen ters within V A IO Space, as fo ll ows: Software Center Applica tions Accessori es Contains icons for all pr einstalled applic ations and a ccesso ries. See “Usin g the Softwar e Center” on pa ge 55 for deta ils.
Navigat in g throu gh V AIO Space 1 Move the mouse pointer over an icon on the V AIO Launcher . Categories for each center appear . 2 Click the category text (such as ) to open the V A IO scr een.

Using the Softwar e Ce nter 1 Move the mouse pointer over the Softwar e Center icon on the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click the text of the catego ry ( or ) to open the V A IO screen . 3 T o sta rt an applica tion, click the i con. Display in formation about a pr ogram.
Usin g t he Au dio -Video Cen te r The Audio-V ideo Center includes the following pr ograms: The V ideo Player plays MPEG (.mpg), MPEG2 (.vob) and A VI (.avi) video files. 1 Move the mouse pointer over th e Audio-V ideo Center icon on the V AIO Launcher .
1 Click the Pla y List button . 2 Select one or mo re video files fr om the A V PlayList dialog box. 3 Click ADD. 4 Click OK. The video file begins playing automati cally . The Music/Movie Pla yer allows you to play audio and video from a CD in the option al CD-ROM drive, or fr om audio or video files in various formats on your h a r d drive.
Y ou can expand the Control bar to double-heigh t to access more functions by clicking the Expa nd button ( ▼ ) at the far right. T o return to single height, cli ck the Restore button ( ▲ ). T o change the Contr ol bar into a f loating window , drag the bar to the center of the screen.
Using the Online Cen ter 1 Move the mouse pointer over the Online Center icon on the V AIO Launcher . 2 Click the text of the categor y as described below . Easy Intern et V AIO Dire c t Sony of fers an en tire line of products specifically designed to work with your computer .

Customizing Y our Notebook Computer Y ou can customiz e the setting s of your no tebook com puter . The follow ing sections b riefly describe how to change you r computer ’s defa ult setting s. Y ou can also refer to th e Sony Notebook Setup Help for mor e detailed inform ation.
About This Computer Display system information, including memory capaci ty , serial num ber , and BIOS version. Infrared Change the infrared communication settings depending on the infrar ed equipment your computer is using t o communicate. Pri nter Change printe r port mo de sett ings.
Controlling Power Management The PowerPanel utility al lows yo u to control the pow er managemen t of your not ebook com puter and provides key in formatio n abou t system activity and battery life. The fo llowing sections briefly describe how to conserve your com pu ter ’s battery power .
PowerPanel also pr ovides power management co mmands that you can use to activate sp ecific power m anagement functions and to con tr o l power for a specific device.
1 Double-click the (PowerPanel) icon on the taskbar . The Pro files toolbar appears. When you move the poin ter over the atom icon on the t askbar , a t ooltip with the name o f the active power manage me nt profile a ppears. 2 Click the button yo u want to set.
Display ing Batt ery Informati on Y ou can dis play detailed informa tion for the battery in your com put er . The following sections brief ly describe how to disp lay your computer ’s general battery inf o rmation. Y ou can also r efer to the BatteryScope Help for mor e detailed information.
Y ou can ob tain detailed informatio n about the batteries. ❑ Double-click the battery icon on the toolbar to display the BatteryScope w indow . The scree n appears disp laying the Battery tab, which contains informa tion such as the estima ted time-to-em pty and the charging time.
Star tin g Y our Favo rite Sof tware With Programmable Power Key (PPK) Setup The PPK Se tup softwa re enables you to start your favorite so ftware by simply pressing the pr ogrammable pow er key . This section briefly describes how to u se the pr ogrammable power key .
2 Select the so ftware title you wan t PPK to launch autom atical ly from the Regist ered F iles list and righ t-click. The Setup optio ns screen appears.

Calling SOS The SOS appl ication ena bles you to exchange in formation wi th a So ny Customer Support Repr es entative (CSR). Her e’s how it works: ❑ T y pe your na me and the problem descriptio n in the SOS win dow . ❑ Dial the SO S hotline wi th a sin gle click of the mo use.
3 In the S OS wind ow , ty pe your na me, phone n umber , an d a description of the pr oblem. This information can n ot be seen by the custom er support repr e sentative unti l you give the CSR access to your computer . 4 Click the Call S OS button. The Co nfirmation s creen appears.
T roubleshooting This section describes h ow to solve com mon problems you may encounter when using your com puter . Many pr oblems have simple solutio ns, so try these sugg estions before you call Sony O nline Support . ❑ Check that the computer is plugged into a power sour ce and that it is turned on.
Remo ve the floppy disk drive, port r eplicator , PC car d, and any other peripheral devices. f rom the computer . T u rn the computer of f and then turn it on a gain. T u rn on the computer an d pr es s the F2 key when the Sony logo appears. The BIOS setup menu scr een appears.
❑ T r y restarting the computer . On the W i ndows task bar , click the Sta rt button, click Sh ut Down, and then click Restart th e computer . ❑ If you cannot r estart as described in the pr eceding step, you can r estart the computer by pr ess ing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
❑ Some titles require specific files that are located on the applicati on’s CD-ROM disc. Insert the disc and try starting the pr ogram again. ❑ Make sur e you place the disc in the tray with the l abel side facing up. ❑ The diskette is write-protected.
❑ Check that the ph one number the progr am is dialing is corr ect. ❑ Check that the software you are using is co mpatible w ith the notebook computer modem. (A l l pr einstalled programs are compat ible.) Call the software publisher or S ony Online Supp ort.
It is best to shut down your computer usi ng the Shut Dow n comman d on the W in dows 98 Start m enu. Usin g other meth ods, includin g those lis ted here, may result in loss of unsaved data. If the Shut Down command does not work properly , follow these steps: ❑ Restart the computer by pr es sing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
Using the S yste m an d Appli cation Re covery CDs The following sections describe how to use the System Recovery and Application Recovery utilities. Y ou need to connect the optional PCGA- CD5 CD-ROM dr i ve to use the System an d Application Recovery CDs.
1 Insert the Sony S ystem Recovery CD in the CD-RO M drive. 2 Shut down your com put er as described in “Sh utting Down Y o ur Computer” on page 13. 3 W a it four second s and turn on yo ur computer . 4 Click OK to s ignify you have re ad and a ccept the Microso ft End-User License Agreement.
The Applicatio n Recovery CD s allow you to r e install individual application s and device drivers if they ar e corrupted or acci dentally erased. Reinstallin g an individual device driver or softw ar e title may corr ect a problem you are experiencin g with your computer , and you may not need to recover the entire contents of your h ar d drive.

Notes on Use This section describes safety guidelines and preca utions to help protect your co mputer from po tential damage . ❑ Do not leave the LCD facing the sun as it can da mage the LCD. Be car eful when using the computer near a window . ❑ Do not scratch the LCD or exert pressure on it .
❑ T o disconnect the cor d, pul l it out by the plug. Never pull the cor d it self . ❑ Unplug yo ur computer from the wall outlet if you wi ll not be usin g the computer for a long time. ❑ When the AC a dapter is not used, unplug it fr om the AC outlet.
❑ The computer uses high-fr equency radio signals and may ca u se interfer ence to radio or TV r eception. Should this occur , r elocate the computer a suitable distanc e away from the set. ❑ Use only specified peripheral equipmen t and interface cables; otherwis e, problems may result.
❑ Fingerprints and dust on the s urface of a dis c may cause r ead errors. Proper care o f the disc is essential to mainta in its reliability . Do not use solvents such as benz ine, thinner , com mercially availa ble cleaners or anti-static spray , as they may cause damage to the di sc.
❑ Make sur e to disconnect the AC ada pter before cl eaning the computer . ❑ A voi d rubbing the LCD s creen as this can damage the scree n . Use a soft, dry cloth to wi pe the LCD screen. ❑ Clean the comput er with a soft cloth lightly moi stened with a mild deter gent solution.

Limited W arranty Statement The limited warranty on your Sony V AIO 505 SuperSlim Notebook covers parts and labor again s t defects in material or workmanship fo r a period of three months fr o m the original date of purchase. Y ou ca n extend the warranty period for an addition a l nine months by r egistering you r computer .
