Insert the negative ( – ) end first, then push in and down until the positive (+) end clicks into position.

The W AIT indicator goes off when all receivable channels ar e preset. T o check if the channels are preset corr ectly Set the TV to the video channel and press PROGRAM +/ – on the VCR.

When no more receivable channels can be found, presetting stops and the pictur e from the lowest numbered channel is displayed on the TV screen.

17 Getting Started Getting Started PLAY OK 4 Set the year , hour and minute in sequence, using , to flash the item to be set, and M / m to select the digits. 5 Press OK to start the clock. Tip • T o change the digits during setting, press < to return to the item to be changed, and select the digits using M / m .
Basic Operations 18 Basic Operations Playing a tape 1 T urn on your TV and set it to the video channel. 2 Insert a tape. The VCR turns on and starts playing automatically if you insert a tape with its safety tab removed.

Basic Operations 20 T o use the time counter At the point on the tape that you want to find later , press CLEAR. The counter in the display window resets to “ 0:00:00. ” Sear ch for the point afterwards by r eferring to the counter . T o display the counter on the TV screen, pr ess DISPLA Y .
Basic Operations 21 Basic Operations T ur ning on the VCR and TV , and starting playback automatically (T rinitron TV Synchro Play) Y ou can only use this function if your TV is made by Sony (T rinitron TV).
Basic Operations 22 SP APC Recor ding TV pr ogrammes 1 T urn on your TV and set it to the video channel. 2 Insert a tape with its safety tab in place. 3 Press PROG +/ – to select the pr ogramme position you want to recor d.
Basic Operations 23 Basic Operations REC LP APC S E :: 2 2 – 00 0 LP APC SP/LP (SP/EP) 4 Press SP/LP (SP/EP) to select the tape speed, SP or LP . LP (Long Play) provides r ecording time twice as long as SP (Standard Play), however , SP pr oduces better picture and audio quality .
Basic Operations 24 T o record NTSC colour system pr ogrammes NTSC colour signals can be recor ded through the line input (LINE-1 IN) only . Display “ L ” in the display window using INPUT SELECT or PROG +/ – in step 3. For tape speed, select SP or EP in step 4.
Basic Operations 25 Basic Operations SP STOP APC SP APC START SP APC START Recor ding TV programmes using the Easy Timer function The Easy T imer function allows you to make a timer recording of a programme without turning on your TV .
Basic Operations 26 Recording TV pr ogrammes using the Easy T imer function (continued) 4 Set the recor ding stop time in the same way as in step 2, then press the EASY TIMER knob. A programme number flashes. 5 T urn the EASY TIMER knob clockwise or counterclockwise to select the programme you want to r ecord.
Basic Operations 27 Basic Operations SP APC CLOCK START 1 • When “– : – –” is displayed in the display window , press EASY TIMER. • T o change the clock setting, press and hold the EASY TIMER knob on the VCR for more than thr ee seconds.

Basic Operations 31 Basic Operations Setting the timer manually Y ou can preset up to eight pr ogrammes at a time. Before you start … • Check that the VCR clock is set to the correct time. • Insert a tape with its safety tab in place. Make sure the tape is longer than the total recor ding time.
Basic Operations 32 PLAY OK T o record the same pr ogramme every day or the same day every week, press m while the date is flashing. For details, see “ Daily/ weekly recor ding ” below . T o record fr om a source connected to the LINE-1 IN jacks; press INPUT SELECT or PROG +/ – to display “ L ” in the “ PROG ” position.

Additional Operations 35 Checking/ changing/ cancelling timer settings Before you start … • T urn on your TV and set it to the video channel. 1 Press ?/1 to turn on the VCR. 2 Press MENU, then select TIMER SET/CHECK: • If you want to change or cancel a setting, go on to the next step.
Additional Operations 36 3 Press M / m to select the setting you want to change or cancel: • T o change the setting, press < / , to flash the item you want to change, and press M / m to r eset it. Then, press , repeatedly until the cursor ( B ) appears at the beginning of the line.
Additional Operations 37 Sear ching the beginning of an Easy Timer recor ded pr ogramme If you recor d a programme using the Easy T imer function, you can easily find the beginning of the recor ding with this SEARCH function. The SEARCH indicator flashes when the VCR finishes the Easy T imer recor ding.
Additional Operations 38 Sear ching using the index function The VCR marks the tape with an index signal at the point where each r ecording begins. Use these signals as refer ences to find a specific recor ding. The VCR can search up to 99 index signals ahead of or behind the current position.

For example, you can find a recor ded portion 15 minutes ahead of or behind the current position of a tape by using the T ime Search function.
Additional Operations 41 Adjusting the pictur e Adjusting the tracking Although the VCR automatically adjusts the tracking when playing a tape (the indicator flashes in the display window , then goes off), distortion may occur if the tape was recor ded in poor condition.
Additional Operations 42 Tip • T o set the tracking to the centre position, press the TRACKING + and – buttons at the same time. Note • There is a delay of a few seconds befor e the VCR actually starts recording while the VCR analyses the tape.

Additional Operations 44 Editing with another VCR How to connect to recor d on this VCR Tip • Connect LINE-1 IN on this VCR to the line output jacks on the other VCR using a commercially available audio/video cable such as Sony VMC-710HG/720HG (not supplied).

46 Additional Information T roubleshooting Symptom The ?/1 ON/ST ANDBY switch does not function. The power is turned on but the VCR does not operate. The clock has stopped and “–:– –” lights in the display window . The playback picture does not appear on the TV screen.
47 Additional Information Recording Symptom No TV programmes appear on the TV screen. TV r eception is poor. The recor ded picture has no colour or unusual colour . The tape starts playing as soon as it is inserted. The tape is ejected when you press z REC.
48 Additional Information T roubleshooting (continued) Symptoms caused by contaminated video heads Sapphire tape cleaner The unit incorporates a sapphire tape cleaner which cleans a video tape when it is loaded. This cleaner can pr event the video heads fr om contamination by r emoving dust or mold fr om a tape with the sapphire edge.
