10 How to Use th e On-S creen Menus The followi ng three di splays are mainly used to operate th is record er. Once y ou become fami liar with th e basic op eration s, you will find the reco rder eas y to use.
11 Sub-menu The su b-menu ap pears whe n you sel ect an item from a l ist menu (e.g ., a title fr om the Title List menu), and press EN TER. The s ub-menu d isplays opti ons app lica ble o nly to the se lect ed it em . The disp laye d options di ffe r depe nding on the situati on and disc type.

13 Hookups and Settings A: Cable box or sa tellite receiver with a vi deo/audio o utput With this h ookup, y ou can record a ny channel o n the ca ble box or satelli te receiv er. Be sur e that the cable box or satellite rec eiver is turned on. This connect ion is n ecess ary to use the Synchro-Rec functi o n (pages 53 and 83).
14 B: Cable box with an antenna output only With this h ookup, you can record an y channel on the sa tellite receiver or cable b o x. Be sure that the cable box or sa tellite receiver is turned on .
15 Hookups and Settings C: Cable without cabl e box, or antenna only (no cabl e TV) Use thi s hookup if yo u watch ca ble chan nels witho ut a cable bo x. Also u se this hoo kup if you ar e using a VHF /UHF ante nna or se parate VH F and UH F antennas .

17 Hookups and Settings If your T V has component video i nput jacks Connect the COMP ONENT VIDEO O UT jacks us ing a comp onent vide o cord (not supplied) or three video cord s (not su pplied) of the same kind an d length. Yo u will enjoy accu rate color reproduction and high qua lity imag es.
18 Step 4: Conne cting to You r AV Ampl ifier (Recei ver) Select one of the fo llowin g pattern s A or B , acc ording to the input jack on your AV amplifier ( receiver). This will enable you to l isten to DVD audio trac ks through y our AV amplifie r (receiver).
19 Hookups and Settings A Connec ting to aud io L/R jacks This conn ection us es a ster eo ampli fier ’s (rece iver’s) two front speakers fo r soun d. You ca n enjoy th e surround functi on that cre ates virtu al speak ers from two ster eo speak ers.
20 Step 5 : Conn ectin g the Power Co rd Plug th e record er and TV power co rds into an AC outle t. After yo u connect th e power co rd, you must wait for a short wh ile before operati ng the record er . You ca n operat e the recorder o n ly afte r the front panel displa y lights u p and the r ecorder enters standb y mode.
21 Hookups and Settings Controlling TVs wi th the remote You ca n adjust the remot e contr ol’s sign al to cont rol your TV. If you co nnect the r ecorder to an AV am plifier (receiv er), yo u can als o use th e suppl ied rem ote to control the AV amplifier’s (r eceiver’s) volu me.

23 Hookups and Settings Step 7 : Easy Setup Follow the s teps below to make the min imum numbe r of basic ad justme nts for using the recorder. If you do not comple te Easy Setup, it wil l appear each ti me you tur n on your record er. Settings a re made in the follo wing order.
24 7 Selec t whethe r or not you us e the cabl e box/sa tellit e receiv er contr ol, and pres s ENTER . If y ou wa nt to use the cabl e box/ satelli te recei ver cont rol (page 1 2), selec t “Yes .” If you do not have a c able box, s elect “No, ” then go to s tep 11.
25 Hookups and Settings “4:3 Letter Bo x”: For sta ndard TVs. Disp lays “wi de scre en” pictur es with b ands on the upper and lower se ctions of the scr een. “4:3 Pa n Scan”: For standard TVs. Automatically d ispla y s “wide screen” pict ures on t he entire screen and cu ts off t he sections that do no t fit.

73 VCR Playback Adjusting the pi cture (tracking) You can man ually adjus t trackin g if the reco rding quality is too poor to be remedi ed by the VCR’s automatic tracking ( a tracking meter a ppears during t he automatic tracking). Press TRACK ING +/–.
74 Play back Op tions *1 Can be pressed up t o four times to forward about two mi nutes. *2 For 10 seconds in S P or LP mode/for 15 seconds in EP mode. To resume normal pl ayback , press H PLAY. Notes • The sound is mu ted during pl ayback at va rious speeds.
75 VCR Playback Search ing Using Vari ous Funct ions The VCR automaticall y marks th e tape with a n index s ignal at t he point where eac h reco rding begins . You ca n easily f ind a sp ecific po int usin g variou s search functi ons. Note During DVD recording , you cannot use VCR search functions.
76 Displ aying the P layin g Time and Play Informa tion You can check pl ayback i nformat ion, such as elapsed o r remaining t ime, recor ding mode, etc .

81 VCR Recording VCR Time r Record ing You can set the timer f o r a to tal of 12 programs together wit h DVD and VCR timer recording, up to o ne mo nth in ad vance. Foll ow the s teps belo w to se t eac h tim er r ecor ding items. Note Do not operate your cable box or satell ite receiver just before o r during a timer r ecord ing.

If timer setti ngs overlap The program that starts fir st has priority and the second progr am starts recording only after the fi rst program ha s finished. If the programs sta rt at th e same time, the progr am listed first in the menu has priori ty.
83 VCR Recording Record ing From Conn ected Equip ment Wi th a Time r (Synch ro Rec) You can set the recorder to a u tomatic ally reco rd pro grams from conn ected eq uipme nt that has a timer funct ion (such as a satelli te tuner ). Connect the equ ipmen t to the LINE 1 I N jacks on the rear of the r ecorder (page 13) .
